TBS, TNT, truTV, CBS - NCAA March Madness

Tim from Springfield said:
Although I'm aware a theme update was due with the new CBS/Turner partnership, I do NOT like the updated version of the CBS college basketball theme music that debuted with the onset of March Madness. But I wonder if this updated theme will be used next season and beyond in CBS' regular season college hoops coverage.

Someone on another board from Philly compared it to WPVI's 1996 news theme (which was an orchestral update of Move Closer to Your World dropped after just five days to viewer pressure).

Sorry to double post, but it's kinda interesting how they're integrating CBS News into the timing schedule. They just aired a special report about the beginnings of bombing in Tripoli, which came from New York with Russ Mitchell airing. Mitchell had also anchored a brief news update earlier.

The last time I saw the news department wrapped around the weekend sports schedule like this was June 13, 2008, when an afternoon of NBC golf was interrupted by the only music you don't want to hear on the network if it's not Sunday – the Special Report theme – and Tom Brokaw in the chair reporting Tim Russert's death.

Speaking of network news, KPHO is running Face the Nation at 5pm tomorrow with its local news at 5:30 into the 60 Minutes lineup. I assume basketball starts early enough to displace it out West. At 4pm, it is airing a sports wrap, then Storm Stories, Face the Nation, local news, and the CBS primetime lineup.

TBS had some horrible audio mix the whole day. Michigan State-UCLA was yucky.

And ever since Thursday (I only can get the CBS games as I'm too cheap right now to spend beyond Comcast's Digital Economy package ;D ;D) I have heard occasional 1-second sound cutouts on CBS perhaps every 10-15 minutes or so during the games. Was this also the problem on TBS? Has the same problem existed in the other networks' game coverage? Anyone know the possible cause (or could this even be caused by tonight's "Supermoon" full moon)?

I like the NCAA theme revamp. The changes are pretty subtle. As I see it the differences are:
- Slightly different orchestration. Bigger brass section with fuller tonality.
- Extended signature. The old signature was eight notes. This one comes with a 14 note signature, but the eight note signature is present for use if CBS wants it.
- Electric guitar returns. This is one feature of the 1993 (synthesized) CBS NCAA theme that was missing in the 2004 redo, which was probably performed by a sextet (five brass, drums).

Ratings from Friday: http://www.multichannel.com/article...r_Net_Format_Scores_Best_Marks_Since_1991.php

CBS and Turner Sports' exclusive second-round coverage of the 2011 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship across TBS, CBS, TNT and truTV on Friday, March 18 combined to deliver an average a 5.0 U.S. household rating and 13 share, up +19% over CBS's 4.2/10 marks in 2010, according to Nielsen Fast Nationals data.

CBS, TBS, TNT and truTV averaged 7.6 million total viewers, scoring 19% amelioration over CBS's 6.3 million total viewers on the first Friday of the 2010 tourney. That audience was also the tops for that since 1991, when the tournament first expanded to four telecast windows for the entire day.

Would this start talk of a realignment in terms of regular-season college basketball?

I wonder if CBS would have ever done this when they were with Viacom? When looking at it I see it being difficult as most of Viacom's cable channels are for kids and music themed other then Comedy Central, TV Land, and Spike TV.

Couldn't see it working on any of their networks. Nickelodeon couldn't be touched as couldn't MTV, VH-1, BET, Comedy Central, or TV Land.

I could see Spike TV working but thats really it. Could you see NCAA Basketball on MTV or even Nickelodeon? Cause I couldn't

That's cool. Pair up Dick Vitale with Gus Johnson-another guy who brings up the excitement in College Hoops, you got yourself a duo who can someday replace Jim Nantz & Clark Kellogg.

Vitale isn't going to "someday replace" anybody. He's 71 and has had health problems. Besides, he's not going anywhere other than ESPN, where he's been since Day One of their college basketball coverage. He'll be with The Northeast-wide Leader as long as he wants to be and his health allows.

The Thursday/Friday Sweet 16 schedules are out. All games are on CBS and TBS, two each (one per network) starting in the 7:15-7:30 EDT block, and two more each in the 9:45-10:00 PM EDT time-frame.

Starting Saturday (Elite 8 ), are all remaining games on CBS as they have been in years past, or will some be on one of the Turner channels?

This year they will be on CBS. At some point (not sure if it's starting next year or in the future) the Final Four will alternate between CBS and Turner.

I believe that kicks in in 2016.

Has anyone seen the schedule for March Madness coverage today? It wasn't thought out well, truTV has the one hour NCAA Pregame show at 6pm but they aren't even airing any of the games today same goes for TNT. On CBS at 6pm local news and 6:30pm CBS Evening News. And as for TBS for the 6pm hour they are airing Seinfeld rerun.

Smart choice would not air Seinfeld on TBS and instead show the NCAA Pregame during the 6pm hour. Because truTV isn't airing any games today. And CBS can let affilates show local news and the CBS Evening News.
