TEJANO LIVES IN KBUC 102.1/KZSP 95.3

After the Entravision change to longtime Tejano station KKPS 99.5 to more Regional Mexican, BMP Radio is picking up the Tejano format that might help them (doubt it) with their weakest signals in the RGV.

Why do you say "Doubt it"?

We have La Ley, Digital, La Lupe and (now) Super Tejano. Four formats that cater to the RGV.

Don't be a hater. ;D

KBUC is no more classic country?

With no promotion other than word of mouth, Super Tejano 102.1 has nearly 1,500 Facebook fans in its first 24 hours on the air. Seems like BMP could really be onto something here. Also glad to see Jack FM stick around on 104.9.

I'm sort of surprised that Entravision didn't just move the Tejano format over to 101.1 - really, there wouldn't have been much to lose. Though I'm also very interested to see if the RGV can support three U.S.-targeted regional Mexican stations (in addition, of course, to 93.1 in Reynosa, 107.1 in Matamoros, and the 93.9/107.5 rimshots). If any market can, it would be this one.

I'm amazed how the Valley can support so much Christian media:
KRIO-AM/KOIR-FM
KRGV-AM/KBIC-FM
KUBR-AM
KVMV-FM
KBNR-FM
KLUJ-TV
An assortment of FM and TV translators
And I think a couple of the Mexican stations broker time to religious broadcasters.

Thank god for SiriusXM!

Interesting to see if BMP picks up any of the Que Pasa jocks that were let go. Good Luck to BMP. If done correctly, Tejano can work in the Rio Grande Valley. Que Pasa has some loyal listeners, but has always been shifting from Norteno to Tejano in the past recent years. Maybe BMP can snatch those disgruntled listeners. It does beat trying to DX KSAB from CC.

Maybe KGBT-AM should consider simulcasting KXTN full time. It can't do much worse than the 0.7 it's pulling now.

It would make KXTN a real Tejano superstation with FM coverage in SA, AM coverage in the Valley and Corpus Christi (daylight hours anyway) and HD Radio coverage in Austin, Dallas and Houston.

Sad to see KBUC go, I would DX it in Lavaca county a lot of the time, not very many classic country stations left.

What about 97.1 KTHT. If I recall, you are able to listen to Houston stations as well. Is KTHT too far?

As far as KXTN on KGBT, it would be interesting to see that, but doubt it very much. Univision's Tejano network has been exclusively on HD-2 carriers (with the lone exception of KPTY 105.3 in Crystal Beach; lasted 3 weeks before the hurricane knocked it out). It seems that both BMP and Univision raced to see who could pick up the disgruntled listeners first. IMO, bad move by Entravision. It is not about the music, but more of the "cultura tejana" that they needed to target.

With KNTE's HD signal I can't pull in KTHT, I can get KKYX in San antonio though.

I agree. Tejano fails when it is treated as a music format. It is a lifestyle format, and EVERY element needs to reflect the listeners' unique family background, education and life experiences of growing up in South Texas.

Has KBUC completed the planned CP? This may determine their success in the future. Decent coverage is needed as the valley is spread out.

Even with the CP built out KBUC can't cover the whole Valley. It can't move its tower any further south because of a fat Class C on 102.1 in Monterrey. That station is only 160 miles from Raymondville which is exactly the minimum separation required under the FCC rules.

I am not a "hater"... these are the weakest signals in the RGV... KBUC is not a full market station even with it's CP and KZSP... enough said.

The truth is that BMP might get additional listeners, but it is not going to sweep up KKPS numbers. Just don't see that happening.

McAllen and Brownsville are 60 miles apart. And Rio Grande City is more than 100 miles from South Padre Island. Anywhere else we would be talking about two seperate markets. You have to have at least 5,000 watts on AM or a full 100,000 watt class C FM on a tall stick to cover that kind of real estate.

Just to be correct...the Weslaco AM is KRGE-AM. The call changed years ago when the Manships sold 1290.
