The Freakin' Deacon

There's a "Who Was Your Mentor?" thread on the Atlanta board and someone mentioned The Deacon as a mentor. I posted a reply and I started wondering what Deac's been up to recently. Anyone know what the Grand Strand's Sweet Daddy has been doing lately and how he is?

Billboard award-winning personality from West Virginia, Freakin' Deacon, who has also been in The Guinness Book Of World Records, currently does "on-air" work at grandstrandradio.com's on line Beach & Classic Hits Station.
His days at KZQ in Myrtle Beach where THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Kahuna. I thought he was doing that on grandstrandradio.com, but the site is inop and parked on a GoDaddy.com page. I was thinking that it might've moved somewhere else. Deac was the best...for sure. Hope you're well.

You might not know this if you weren't in the control room with him but, remember "booby bell time"? Well, it was a real booby. Well, rubber actually, but in the shape of, well, you get it.

Ahhh, the "boobie bell". I remember it well. Deac and I used to goof on each other at the Q. One time, when he put 'Stairway to Heaven' on so he could visit the...men's room(Stairway to Heaven, as old school radio people know, is a classic 'bathroom song'), I turned the monitor all the way down, then I mashed the ear cups on his headphones into the ink stamp pad we had in the control room. I got the cups real inked up(they were already black, so you couldn't tell) and then I ran to the bathroom and started banging on the door yelling, "DEAC!!!! WE'RE OFF THE AIR!!!! WE'RE OFF THE AIR!!! You could hear him russling around and putting himself back together, suddenly he came dashing out of the bathroom, into the control room, realized we weren't on the air and immediately slid his phones on. When he realized that I had turned the monitor down, all he said was, "Damn Summers...sonofabitch can't even let a guy take a #$@&&@ without ##%@$-ing around with him". Muttering and cussing every step of the way, he went back to the bathroom, ....which is when he found out I hadn't just turned the monitor down. All I can say is that I have seldom laughed harder in my life...except for the time I switched a Mother Fletcher's spot with one I had dubbed and overdubbed with burps and farts. Another story for another time about a great personality who gives as good as he gets.

I have always been a fan of the Frakin` Deacon! A poster on here has made posts that I was biased towards WYAY-FM Wave 104. The truth is, back in the 1970`s- late 1980`s, I enjoyed WKZQ alot more. The Freakin` deacon actually did his WKZQ show in a booth at the Pavillion at one point. I know that Deacon`s most famous moment at WKZQ was July 4 th 1977, when he played the full long version of Steppenwolf`s "The Pusher" on air! Does anyone else remember this? WKZQ suspended him and almost fired him for this. Deacon talked about this in a 2000 era blog that I remember reading. By 1988, deacon was doing Country on y103 WYAK in Myrtle Beach. I know that by 1996, he was doing the Oldies Morning Show on WSYN-Fm Sunny 106.5. He even won some awards for that gig, as I recall. I know that he was at Sunny 106.5 until about 2003. He really needs to get back into grand Strand radio! He was running some restaurants in Surfside Beach at one point. By the way, is that Grand Strand Radio wen site still active anywhere? Is Deacon still involved?

Jesus, GoodTimes, if you're referring to me saying you were biased towards Wave, let me refresh your memory. I said, "I know you've said you went to Coastal back in the 80s and that you listened to Wave 104. I have no problem with that, even tho I worked at KZQ. That is all I said. I never said or insinuated that you were biased towards Wave. I only said I worked at the Q and didn't have a problem with that. If anything, I insinuated that I was biased towards KZQ.

But, I digress. Although "The Pusher" episode was before my time, I am very familiar with it. Anybody that ever worked at KZQ has an almost encyclopedic memory of all the stuff that ever happened at the Q before, during and after they worked there...at least everyone until they switched to rock from top 40 and CHR. Deacon is an American Original and I am proud to have worked with him...and all the others...Deacon, John Kilgo, Dwayne Ward, Bob Chase, Mixin' Dixon, Linda Kennedy, Sara, Marv Clark and Jeff McMurdy. And I feel honored that I worked at a station and wandered the same halls that Greg Fowler, "Shotgun" Jeff Stone, J. Patrick Milan, John Van Pelt, Brian Phillips(nope, not that Brian Phillips), Henry Kaye, Ray Mariner, Mike Willis and others too numerous to mention wandered as well. I need to say this, too...none of it would've been possible without owner Tom Rogers and especially GM Bill Hennecy.

Hey Scott, was that the same Mike Wiollis that was at WZLD and is now at DNR?

Yep. One and the same. Mike, Benji and I used to hang out with our girlfriends at Willis's apartment in West Columbia, drinking beer and listening to his KZQ lp of KZQ airchecks. I'm thinking that that's probably one big reason none of us are with the same girls now...pretty sure they were bored as shit.

Scott, I just I was confused about what you were saying about me and Wave 104. What did you think of Bananna jack Murphy on WKZQ/ He came in 1989, right after you left. He sure was there for a long time. I always thought that he was trying to sound like John Boy and Billy, as Jack came to WKZQ from a station in NC in John Boy and Billy country. Jack left wkzq/wyav about a year ago. I see he bought a small am station in Loris. Was he fired by the company that owns wkzq/wave 104?

Nanner and I never knew each other very well because we never worked together. When Z92.9 out of Dillon tried to go after the Myrtle Beach market in the early 90s, my boss wanted me to go after him on the air. It's not my style, but what can you do? I think I referred to him as Banana Dick once. He's a classy guy and he never said anything to me. However, Hennecy and I spoke once after that and Hen-man ripped me a new asshole for it. Hennecy and I haven't spoken since. Banana Jack is an uber-talented personality who has achieved a rare feat for a jock these days...he is the brand. Don't know why he got let go other than ownership couldn't afford him. I hope he does well with the property in Loris.

Z 92 out of Dillion is interesting. They had a strong signal and top 40 format. Then, in 1988 they went off the air! They didn`t return to the airwaves until around 1992 as I recall. Does Z 92 still exist? How was life on the radio in Dillion? Back in the mid-1980`s, Z 92 had alot of advertising around the Grand Strand. Do you know where the Freakin` Deacon is now?

Hmmm, not sure about the timeline. I had succeeded Dale O'Brian at Mix 96 out of Laurinburg, NC in July 1992 right after I got out of the Army. I left after about 6 months to go to WRCQ-Fayetteville(Metropolitan Broadcasting at the time) to do mornings. Z93 was on the air in 1992 for sure, but I thought it had been on in 1991 as well. Not certain, tho. Anyway, our GM, Ron Walton (UGH!), decided to simulcast RCQ's morning show on Z93 after Metropolitan bought it(changing the moniker to Z92.9). Of course, when you think of "simulcast" you'd think we had the technology to pull it off. We didn't. RCQ wouldn't reach Dillon, but Dillon's monstrous signal blanketed Fayetteville...and the rest of the continent, it seemed. So, they put a receiver in the studio at RCQ and made me broadcast the show from Dillon, capture the signal at RCQ on the receiver and re-transmit it through the board at RCQ. High tech stuff. It was the beginning of the end.

Hey, this is my 400th post! Where is the confetti? The parade? And dancing girls? You mean there isn't even a 20 dollar gift certificate to Olive Garden? What a gyp.

Hey GoodTimes, you should hit 400 by 2pm this afternoon.

Congrads!!!!!!!!!!!!! Scott for your 400 post!!!!!! I am hoping to hit my 400 post by late this afternoon. Freqdev has been nice enough to arrange a party for me at te Clear Channel Greenville studios. He is going to show me the wonders of automation and how they run that cluster with only 4 people, first he has to take out the garbage, they don`t pay anyone to do that at Cheap Channel. Then, Freqdev is going to buy me a full tank of gas, since gas is going up to $7.00 a gallon by the end of the summer!!!!!!!! :D ;D  :p :-X

Hi there Temple, Daryl, Bren...lol. Woman of a thousand names. Doing fine...I hear ya about the "old radio days" just not being the same anymore...plus, we've lost at least two REALLY good ones with Mike Parnell and Mike Scott passing away this year. Just drives home how much radio is different nowadays. I've had an outstanding "friend" request placed with Deac's MySpace page for months now. Somebody needs to re-teach Daddy Rabbit how to operate his 'puter. As a bonus, I've been chit chatting with John Van Pelt for a couple of days now and I think he registered with Radio-Info last night, so, hopefully, soon we'll be checking out some stories of his from WAY back in the day.

Hope you're well, too, my dear. How's the young'un?

Z93 in it's rock days signed back on the air on Labor Day Weekend in 1991. When it signed back on the air it was balls to the wall rock and was going after any radio station that got in the way... By the time we got to 1993 Z was more of a classic hits kind of format and once again went dark till around 94 when The Eagle was born... I wanna say that took place around April or so. Now gotta pick at Scott!!! Wonder what happen to that ole' CD player eh?????? CC1

da youngins are good! Ella is 19 months now, can you believe that?

Working at V 102.5 now......looking for a move out of radio and into records, the wheels are slow but they are moving so that's good. Hopefully I will get there one day.

Coming home for my high school reunion in October, (20 years, UGH!!!!) would love to see you if we can work it out!

Hated to hear about Michael P, thank goodness I did get to talk to him in March before he passed the following January, I am so glad I made that call.

Take care,

Lol. My 30th is next year. That BLOWS!!! Depending on when, in October, I might be able to work that out coz I'm going down to Columbia for several games this Fall.

Hope I never see that damn thing again. But if I do, I'm sure my luck will have me standing in a pool of water when I stick my finger on(uh, I mean in) the start button. Back then, if Z93 was an airline, it would've been Peoples Express and they'd wait until they got in the air and pass the hat for gas money. Kinda got your ass in a ringer by then, ya know? ;D

Hope you're well, Carroll.
