I have always been a fan of the Frakin` Deacon! A poster on here has made posts that I was biased towards WYAY-FM Wave 104. The truth is, back in the 1970`s- late 1980`s, I enjoyed WKZQ alot more. The Freakin` deacon actually did his WKZQ show in a booth at the Pavillion at one point. I know that Deacon`s most famous moment at WKZQ was July 4 th 1977, when he played the full long version of Steppenwolf`s "The Pusher" on air! Does anyone else remember this? WKZQ suspended him and almost fired him for this. Deacon talked about this in a 2000 era blog that I remember reading. By 1988, deacon was doing Country on y103 WYAK in Myrtle Beach. I know that by 1996, he was doing the Oldies Morning Show on WSYN-Fm Sunny 106.5. He even won some awards for that gig, as I recall. I know that he was at Sunny 106.5 until about 2003. He really needs to get back into grand Strand radio! He was running some restaurants in Surfside Beach at one point. By the way, is that Grand Strand Radio wen site still active anywhere? Is Deacon still involved?
Jesus, GoodTimes, if you're referring to me saying you were biased towards Wave, let me refresh your memory. I said, "
I know you've said you went to Coastal back in the 80s and that you listened to Wave 104. I have no problem with that, even tho I worked at KZQ. That is all I said. I never said or insinuated that you were biased towards Wave. I only said I worked at the Q and didn't have a problem with that. If anything, I insinuated that
I was biased towards KZQ.
But, I digress. Although "The Pusher" episode was before my time, I am very familiar with it. Anybody that ever worked at KZQ has an almost encyclopedic memory of all the stuff that ever happened at the Q before, during and after they worked there...at least everyone until they switched to rock from top 40 and CHR. Deacon is an American Original and I am proud to have worked with him...and all the others...Deacon, John Kilgo, Dwayne Ward, Bob Chase, Mixin' Dixon, Linda Kennedy, Sara, Marv Clark and Jeff McMurdy. And I feel honored that I worked at a station and wandered the same halls that Greg Fowler, "Shotgun" Jeff Stone, J. Patrick Milan, John Van Pelt, Brian Phillips(nope, not
that Brian Phillips), Henry Kaye, Ray Mariner, Mike Willis and others too numerous to mention wandered as well. I need to say this, too...none of it would've been possible without owner Tom Rogers and especially GM Bill Hennecy.
