The Illusive Obvious!

Sorry KDM,
I wasn't going that deep. I was really only poking fun at Asugeorges comment about DJ RAP TALK. Anyways, I got a good laugh out of it. I think DJ Perry is right, 101.1 congrats to their old school and new school hiphop, but they could go further than that. How about Tribe, De LA SOUL, Jungle Brothers, Boogie Down, and The ULTRAMAGNETIC MCEES BOYEEEE LOL!! ;)

BTW KDM, you mentioned Phx does not have a slow jam show....incorrect. Eva 95.5 does, and so does Mega 104.3.

But they are not urban or urban leaning rhythmics. Phoenix doesn't have an urban or urban leaning rhythmic with a slow jams show.

Am I the only one who doesn't find this entertaining in the slightest?

(Sorry to burst anybody's bubble), but we're talking about a station that is trying to emulate another station that currently sucks. Furthermore, KKFR STILL wasn't at its best when it was a hip-hop station. It was at its best during the '95-'97 years. Why isn't there a station trying to emulate that?

I was waiting to see what you would say!

But KNRJ is not trying to be KKFR. From the looks of things, their goal is to be better with the format than KKFR is currently, and probably / most likely continue off where KKFR left off near the end of 2008. KKFR has gone more pop. I think this, in addition to other factors...., gave KNRJ the loophole to do what they seem to be preparing to do. I think the "St James Show" on KNRJ is a sign of things to come, and if it is, KNRJ will be ok when it comes to picking the right hip hop hits. I just doubt that they'll manager to last without adding in R&B. Mary J Blige, Beyonce, and Miguel...etc all have new songs that are currently not being played regularly in a major market like Phoenix. Some of them are even rising within the top 20 RHYTHMIC charts....

I think KNRJ found a good gap to fill. It also brings more variety to Phoenix radio dial. I remember back when Power 92 was "edgy hip hop" for the west coast or west side of the U.S. in early 2000, and people who used to fly in to visit would call Power talking about how great Phoenix was because their city (Denver, Cheyenne, Seattle, Salt Lake City...etc) didn't have a station that hip.

Exactly. KDM always goes too deep, when it should be KNRJ instead. Those are classic examples you'll hear on any Old School Rap format. Do you realize that (with the exception of when I had a mix on that station) they never played any Ice T in rotation? And the only Sir Mix a Lot they own is Baby Got Back?

And BTW X, they don't say Boyeeee anymore. It's "Sonnnnn!" now :)

DJ Perry,
How about an Old school deep HipHop mix show on KVIT on the weekend. Just add more weekend shows of every Genre. I like what the're doing with dance, but how about a show for all genre's. I think KVIT can do it legally. 8)

KNRJ The Beat should focus on playing serious Old School Party Joints. 80's thru 2000, Rhythmic, Urban, Dance from back in the day. There are sooo many classic rap songs they never touched, yet instead played Will Smith or Puff Daddy every few hours. Listen to any satellite channel that plays Throwback, and they smoke both KNRJ and KAJM. And those are only jukeboxes. It seems like a no brainer.

Phoenix already has enough classic / old school / back in the day formats. It would make more sense for one of those existing formats to adopt some specialty show segment featuring Old School Party Joints than it would be to pop up, yet again, another format catered to any type of pop sound from the 80's - 00's and dividing the ratings even more. A station like that would have to struggle within this sea of "close call similarity classic formats" we have now. KAJM and KYOT both have room for mixshows where certain old school party joints can be featured. I'm not sure about KPKX, but for a moment, they once seemed like they were on the verge of touching a bit more rhythmic pop material from the past two decades before leaning back more towards the pop / rock sound.

As long as hip hop continues to have a resurgence or at the least, maintain a steady existence within the charts, KNRJ should do fine. Current Hip hop is even still seeming to do better than rock or alternative on the charts. It doesn't seem as if rap is going anywhere anytime soon because every new sound that comes out, people seem to still want to rap on it, or use rappers to gain more acceptance and attention. The hip hop/rap style seems to be outlasting and surpassing everything, as Kanye West mentioned in one of his songs. I'm not even sure if a new adult top 40 station would be a better idea than a new urban format.

Frankly, I'd rather see a Rhythmic AC station DONE RIGHT in Phoenix.

Interestingly, Power 92 between 95-97 seemed to play more of a variety than Hot, Power, Jamz, and Kiss all combined do now. So, why do we need another station playing some of the same songs?

What i see happening, is someone there thinks they are Mr. Cool when it comes to Hip Hop. They want to wake Power 98 up and give them a reason to basically go harder, but if Power is smart, they will ignore this silly game as no one really cares. Us nerds here on the board don't count. The average person still thinks Hip Hop is LMFAO and Pitbull simply because Power plays it.

Because the modern day equivalent of what KKFR did in 95-97 can be heard on KZON and KZZP?

If you want to win, play the best songs. Quit trying to follow what someone else is doing. Make your own way.

I believe the point that I was trying to make was that KKFR was "making its own way" back then and other stations should follow suit. I'm not sure that I would suggest that KZON and KZZP are today's equivalents of Power 92.
