"The new 97 1 the Tower" (The Tower?)

Here's a simple formula: In most radio stations, if you suggest ways to promote the radio station, or if you suggest format ideas, they are heard and discussed and if beneficial, implemented. Now at Cumulus, those that have worked there would say if you did any of the above, you were "pointing out the shortcomings of the management staff" and there will be none of that.

Remember, Cumulus is the company whose owners negotiate contracts. They trust NO ONE to make decisions, yet to them, quality talent is just an employee. Clients are just a flight schedule. Listeners are just listeners. No songs are added without the approval of someone in Atlanta.

At one time, Cumulus had in it's Nashville cluster: Al Brock, Randy Railley (sp), Jake Wylde, George Plaster, Scotty O'Brien, John Blankenship, Jack Shell, Rob Michaels, among others.

This is a company who banks talent fees for 90 days in an account drawing interest and makes the talent fill out an invoice and has to pay taxes on it. That should say it all.

Giggity.

I normally don't check the Nashville boards, but knowing this station and its previous oldies format, it caught my attention. They really changed the name to 97.1 The Tower? This has to be the dumbest thing I've ever seen in my life.

Is there a correct website for it?

I know Al Brock, and in an earlier post, someone mentioned how the station was on target in the oldies format. Then they blow it up, etc. etc.

Someone pinch me, this is a joke right??

Gotta say it , Gig. I have been almost 40 years in the business and have always had talent fees added into my check so that taxes would be taken out... and haver never EVER waited 90 days at Cumulus. I have always been paid my talent fees the paycheck after I submitted them.

I can only assume you have never worked at Cumulus... at least not in Nashville

First off, one person's experience with Cumulus may or may not match those of another. So good for you that your company paid you post haste. Others may disagree. And we all know what happens when one assumes.

Well, the way remote payment is set up (at least the four years I've been here)... the only way not get paid by the next paycheck is to not turn in the paperwork. if that's what happened to you then I'm sorry but them's the breaks.

Thank you for that explanation. And let me reiterate; one man's "Cumulus" is another man's "Crumulus". So please read my posts before you quote them. You will find room in the language of my quote for those that have had good experiences. Many have. But more have not. But that's my opinion based on my experiences and conversations. Sorry if that doesn't match up to Journeyman's 40+ years.

My experience has also taught me that you get out of a gig what you put in to a gig. While it is true that on any given day you could get a visit from the unemployment fairy, most days if you expect to get hosed you'll wind up wet.

Yeah......but Cumulus pretty much sucks overall. The people who will "inevitably do the jobs" are starting to become few and far between. They cannabalized the Dallas cluster. It used to be a destination workplace when Susquehanna owned it.

Cumulus=Radio Cancer.

I am worring about you now Journeyman. It's not like good work ethic keeps you from being blown out. Should I digress at those who put in a honest lifes work....I smell a 40 year rat. Care to come clean? How are you defying the odds??? Staying in the shawdows will not work.

I never said a good work ethic would prevent you from being fired. It happpened to me. to qoute myself:

"While it is true that on any given day you could get a visit from the unemployment fairy, most days if you expect to get hosed you'll wind up wet."

You can either do the work, to the best of your ability, and enjoy yur tenure no matter how short it may be, or gripe about how bad everything sucks. My guess is the latter will push you out sooner.

Profoundly true. Sadly, the flip side of this is if you care to much, the
protectionary system of mediocrity will often reward you with a special
office visit. Complaining that "The Tower" is a failure before it starts
is caring to much and perceived as not going with the flow. It's painful
to see the fake interest and enthusiasm in a launch meeting only to
hear the same people become naysayers (who may have had real honest
imput) five minutes after during a smoke break. (I don't smoke.)

Radio isn't about honesty or job security is it!

It is also important to note that "mediocrity" should not be applied solely to radio. Mattel ran into problems largely, I believe, because to satisfy shareholders demand for stratospheric ROI they cut corners and got goods made on the cheap in China.

You don't have make an outstanding product to make a huge profit, you just have to produce a product as cheaply as possible. The good news in all of this is that "it" is a pendulum. One day it will swing back.

hey i wish all you losers would leave 97.1 the towe alone, there playing the best music thats ever been recorded in history. the name "the tower" is cool, its new and different from any name out there right now for a radio station.

"the towe" should be "the tower"
"there" should be "their"
"thats" should be "that's"...contraction for "that has"
"its: should be "it's"...contraction for "it is"
"your" should be "you're"...contraction for "you are"

please correct these errors, and turn back in before lunch period is over

or...leave the sarcasm to professionals

You sure you wanna call out the grammer cops? Your "their" should actually be "they're".. a contraction of "they are" ... but, hey, I agree on the sarcasm thing.
