The "New" Price Is Right - Thoughts?

Well, I was kind of surprised that NO ONE else mentioned on the boards about the reairing of Bob's last day of The Price Is Right that aired in June and reaired last Friday (October 12th). I mentioned it the other day and the thread got deleted.

I don't want to watch The Price Is Right anymore about hearing that Drew Carey became host. I can't stand Drew Carey at all and I don't know what EVERYBODY sees in him ::) other than he starred in his own sitcom for 9 years and hosted Whose Line Is It Anyway. He is about like Jerry Seinfeld and that is what everyone sees in that guy either. On other boards I can't mention, they act like that he is the second coming of Jesus Christ or something. He is not good looking, nor is he that charismatic. I knew that they were going to change the show for Drew Carey now that that it is HIS show now. And there is going to be even more changes with Drew at the helm. Watch and see.

I don't expect Drew to last no longer than a year. But he will NEVER match Bob Barker's 35 years. In fact, Bob Barker to me WAS The Price Is Right and the last day of The Price Is Right to me was last Friday.

It's shot in HD, as I saw one of the cameras in the background. This is one of the firsts: The first time it's been shot in HD, the first time the music's been in stereo (other than that, it hasn't changed).

Actually, the music and audience have been in stereo for at least a few years now. And if it truly is being "shot in HD", why isn't it being shown in HD?

If there is one thing that bugs me - never mind the set changes - it's in the opening where they fly over the audience. It looks like KCBS/KCAL has its chopper inside the studio hovering over the audience, and the pilot can't control the chopper while the cameraperson is flailing around. I get dizzy just looking at it.

Of all the new changes, that one I hate. It almost gives me motion sickness.

They should go back to the old way with that change.

CBS now makes full episodes available online. Go there and you can watch it.

Thanks for pointing this out. I didn't know that CBS had full episodes available online!

The evolution of game show hosts is interesting. In the 60's and 70's, it used to be that you wanted a suave, debonaire game show host. Even Gene Rayburn (who was hilarious) had to have a suave, more serious side. Now, it seems like we have a different breed. Honestly, I thought that they would choose Todd Newton (a safer, kind-of-young-Bob-Barker choice) over Drew Carey. But, time will tell...

As I wrote this, I realize that diversity is NOT a strong point when choosing game show hosts. The vast majority are white males. What about the changing face of American demographics? Surely there must be qualified people of other racial groups who would be better choices than Drew Carey!

I know of a perfect host and he had his own variety-talk show and won 2 Emmys for it and now hosts a game show on FOX and has a wonderful personality. And his name is: (drum roll)

WAYNE BRADY!!!!

That's who I wanted as host of The Price Is Right. He would have been perfect.

The 1994-95 Price nighttime version had a big strike against it going in, and, IMO, it wasn’t the host or set. Unlike Feud or Millionaire, which have survived on decent, though not spectacular, ratings in part because of daytime clearances (access slots are the exception), Price was slotted in a mix of being pitted against Oprah at the zenith of her popularity (generally on bad stations), in access where no game show has managed to do well nationally against the Wheel/Jeopardy juggernaut, and my personal favorite, two episodes airing in random weekend slots in Philadelphia….when it wasn’t bumped for sports.

Price simply may be a daytime-only format, and that wasn’t a viable option for the syndicated version. It isn’t necessarily that a black floor instead of a white one, a jazzed-up version of the same theme and some minor game play changes were bad ideas for creating a second version. Keep in mind the mid-80’s syndicated version with Tom Kennedy didn’t fare better, and it was a carbon copy of the daytime version, down to having the closest approximation of Barker available at the time hosting.

Does the failure of both versions automatically mean it’s a next-to-impossible road for Carey? That the show really was so driven by Barker that no one could succeed with the program now, regardless of what changes are or aren’t made? Perhaps. None of us know for sure.

CBS seems to have made the best decision for the reality they were faced with. There’s no magic host who would be everyone’s cup of tea. Barker wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea when you look at it objectively. But in Drew Carey, they’ve found a relatively safe, amiable “everyday” guy who probably won’t do anything to drive away the casual viewers who recognize that Bob doesn’t walk on water.

Regardless of who really was or wasn’t in the running for the gig, think about the types of directions they could have taken. A Ryan Seacrest type “rising star of the moment,” a Rosie O’Donnell type loudmouth/lightening rod, a George Hamilton type geriatric b-lister. Would any of those have been so much better? There were other names mentioned who could have filled the same safe position as Drew—John O’Hurley comes to mind, and there probably could have been some women who would have done the job well, too. None of them, though, probably would have been without early jitters like we see in Carey.

CBS made the best decision?!!! Drew Carey got in there as a last minute person before his Power Of 10 aired. I believe that there was something behind that to begin with. I know that there is no magic host to everyone's cup of tea but they certainly should have reconsidered their choice since they had auditions as early as late in 2006, in fact, the minute that Bob announced his retirement, they started auditions. Yes, I know Bob Barker is not everyone's cup of tea because of the lawsuits, etc. but he was a host of The Price Is Right for 35 years and Truth Or Consequences for 18 years before that. Add to that he is a very nice guy to all, he was nice to the contestants, and made the whole show fun.

Drew Carey, a relatively safe, amiable, everyday guy?! Please!! They said that about Louie Anderson and his hosting of Family Feud and look what happened with that. I don't like Drew Carey or Louie Anderson because they are not very good at what they do neither as comedians or as game show hosts.

Also don't forget Match Game '98 and look what happened with that show as well. They shoved Judy Tenuta down everyone's throats with her stupid jokes and attempts to play the accordion.

I give Drew Carey a year at the max. From what I have heard, he has already changed the show into his own show. Watch and see after a year, in that we either get a new host or The Bold And The Beautiful goes to an hour or it goes back to the affiliates.

CBS missed the ball when they hired Drew Carey.

As far as I'm concerned, it's only a matter of time before the show is dead. I'd give it 2 months. CBS will probably give that slot to the affiliates, which will almost definitely air more court shows.
Rriiiiiiight. Yeah...CBS will only give the show 2 months and it's been on HOW long now? Whatever you're smoking pal, share it with the rest of us. ::)

Good Lord...TPIR hosted by Drew Carey is ONLY 3 days old (when I am posting this) and some of you are already trashing it.

Like ANY of you trashing Drew or the alleged "new show" could even remotely come close to what Drew is doing. Christ people...what's to be expected with a new host following the footsteps of Bob Barker? Some of you REALLY need a clue. I mean REALLY.

Drew did just fine and after time, he'll settle in.

I never really liked Drew Carey. For a while I liked his old ABC sitcom, but then it became way too weird. I disliked the show so much whenever I was visiting my friend and he was watching The Drew Carey Show on TBS I'd make him change it.

I agree with that. Drew's show was not funny at all, he looked more like a pudgy version of Jerry Seinfeld (another comedian who is not funny) than anything else, not to mention the cast always going into musical numbers and doing promotional deals like guessing how many times a certain word would come up, among other things.

No question his sitcom jumped the shark, but holding that as a grudge against him before seeing him have time to grow into the new role as host of Price seems to be a bit of an overreaction.

It's widely reported that they did look at a number of people; Carey may have been a late entry into the "race," but none of us were part of the auditions/deliberations to know why some of the others didn't work out. Moreover, being a late entry doesn't mean the process was needlessly rushed.

Comparing Match Game '98 to some slight tweaks to Price is an apples-to-oranges comparison. Drew Carey isn't Judy Tenuta by any valid comparison. Price is simply putting a fresh coat of paint (so to speak) on the same show that's run for 35 years. Match Game was trying to start a new version of the franchise (and 3 am clearances didn't help).

Agreed that Bob made the show fun for many viewers, myself included--I have the utmost respect for his work and his success. That doesn't mean others can't make it fun in a different way and with a different style. I've seen nothing so far to indicate that Carey isn't treating the experience as fun for the players.

No kidding. I rarely watched his prior programs but he always seemed to be like a decent guy, and the fact that they also feel the need to insult his own physical appearance is pretty sad.

I was exaggarating. But, I doubt it'll last more than a season. Networks don't seem to give shows a fair chance anymore. Look at Jericho.

I just got through watching Monday's premiere episode on CBS' Innertube site. I didn't think he was too bad...it's going to take time to get Drew polished. I just call it "first-day jitters". It's never easy to replace an legend, but I'm willing to give him a chance.

I'm not happy with the new set. It has a very "cold feel" compared to the warmer colors when Barker was there.
It sorta reminds me of Star Trek: The Motion Picture from 1979. It looked very cold. And the actors agreed.
So when it came time for Star Trek II Wrath Of Kahn in 1982. The cast was dressed in warmer (red) clothing.

So TPIR (Roger) should look into that. Afterall Drew has said TPIR " Is The Happiest Place On Earth" the set should reflect that!

I like Drew. Just gotta give him time..
