The "New" Price Is Right - Thoughts?

Anyone remember Dennis James' nighttime version?

Yes! I remember Dennis almost pulling the corded mike out of the wall (instead of taking the new mike that one of the "beauties" was offering him). I remember Dennis getting mixed up about the games and he was particularly bad with the Clock Game. I remember Dennis' panic-striken look when the showcase players were EXACTLY the same amount below their respective showcase prices (it was declared a tie and they both won their respective showcases -- I believe it was the only time in TPIR history that this happened).

Basically, he was worse than Drew and lasted only a couple of years (a failure in THOSE days). He did sub for Bob on the daytime version of TPIR, when Bob was ill. And, as expected, it was a disaster because there were differences in commercial breaks that Dennis forgot and only the daytime version had the possibility of winning both showcases at that time.

That being said, I wish there were a nighttime version of TPIR. It would be a lot better than a lot of this other CRAP that I'm watching tonight. Hey, CBS, what about a game show block on Saturday nights? A nighttime TPIR and a GOOD resurrection of Match Game!!!

Someone mentioned Dennis James being a terrible host who only lasted a couple of years. Well let me clear up your confusion. He lasted longer than that. He lasted for 5 years and in my opinion was a good host. Very personable and fun. But you don't have to listen to me. Click the link below to watch him in action and decide for yourself.

You can't really judge someone with such a small sample.
Give Drew a few weeks and then opine.

I apologize about being mistaken on the number of years. However, I don't agree with you on Dennis' performance. My Dad and I used to watch the nighttime TPIR and basically laugh at Dennis' performance. It was like "what ridiculous thing is he going to do THIS week?" On the contrary, we never laughed at Bob Barker because Bob knew his stuff. Dennis was a generic game show host that they tapped for the nighttime TPIR.

That being said, Dennis did an excellent job on the 70's version of Name That Tune. He was "in his element" on that show.

Dennis James

Dennis James was a fantastic announcer, commercial spokesperson and game show host:

check this site for his career information http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0416424/

He did host the"New Price is Right" and "Name that Tune" along with a host of other shows (check out the

imdb link).

He was terrific in his version of the show as Bill Cullen was in the original version of TPIR.

To clear things up, Dennis James hosted the daytime version of Name That Tune on NBC during the 1974-1975 TV season. Tom Kennedy, the host of the syndicated nighttime version, was on ABC at the time, hosting "Split Second". Because of that, NBC had to find someone else to host the Daytime "Tune".

I'm not aware of Dennis hosting Name That Tune. Tom Kennedy hosted Name That Tune. Tom Kennedy also hosted The Nighttime Price Is Right for a couple of years. Now it's all starting to make sense to me. I think you are just confusing the two. You may actually dislike Tom Kennedy and not Dennis James.

Thanks a whole lot! ::) ::) ::) I definitely know the difference between Dennis James and Tom Kennedy. Let me be clear on Dennis James, however, since you think that I don't like him. I actually liked Dennis James...he was a REAL game show host...not a fake made-up Ken doll guy. It's just that TPIR wasn't necessarily his forte. He was trying to be serious and his "errors" ended up being funny. Hey, it got me to watch EVERY week (so I was part of the ratings success of the nighttime TPIR).

In any case, they ended replacing him with Bob Barker. Unless someone has "inside knowledge", I would think that Bob was considered better than Dennis. I attributed it to Dennis' unintentional humor and bumbling some of the games. After all, TPIR requires an accurate host that doesn't make errors...because the games are unforgiving...you either win or lose which shouldn't be determined by the host's ineptness.

Furthermore -- not only was Dennis James a real game show host, he was the FIRST television game show host. He hosted television's first known game show, "Cash and Carry", for the DuMont network back in the late-1940s.

Tom hosted one season of a nighttime Price is Right in the mid '80s, a revival that wasn't part of the original nighttime version. (Kennedy's also was a five-day strip, as opposed to the once-weekly version.)

I managed to watch a few minutes of Drew's "Price" on Wednesday (I didn't get to see the beginning thanks to CBS News preempting literally the first half of the show for Bush's press conference and the end of the show due to KTVT-11 out of Dallas preempting the end due to a news conference)....from what I've seen...the show is still enjoyable. Drew is fresh at the job and can last for about another 35 years. Not bad for the last great daytime game show on television

Well, after reading all the comments on this board, I can't believe the level of analysis that some of you are going to about the changes to a TV game show. It's simply rediculous![\quote]

Just as the Trekkies have the eternal Kirk vs. Picard debate, now the Priceies have the Barker vs. Carey debate.

My all time favorite TPIR clip... Bob is very funny in this one LOL

Overall.. I like the new price.... My only complaint is that the microphone sounds a little distorted

Drew has a new Mic. Barker used a corded Mic. Drew uses a wireless. So even though it looks the same, it's actually not. I also noticed that Drew doesn't have the best Mic technique. He speaks to close to the mic which somehow makes the audio a little distorted. I noticed a lot of pops this week. He needs to back off the mic a few inches. That's my only Drew complaint.

The Producers have been wanting to get rid of the corded mike for years, but Bob kept vetoing the decision. The mike was literally the first change they made after Bob left, even before hiring Drew Carey.
