The "New" Price Is Right - Thoughts?

My two cents:

I like that he is keeping the "Have your pets spayed or neutered". To me that shows respect and a humble courtesy to Bob Barker.

I like that he says, "The Happiest Place on Earth" Since it is CBS and ABC was formerly owned by Disney. Since Disneyland is called the Happiest Place on Earth!

I wished that also they would bring the sets into the 21st century. But ya don't want to completely changed the entire show all at once. You run the chance of alienating the home audience and the advertisers.

Sorry for being out of the loop, since I don't follow business, but when did the Mouse sell the Alphabet? I know Disney used to own baseball and hockey teams. :-[ And to whom? And were the ESPNs sold with ABC? If there was an R-I thread on this please link us to it. I'm getting ready for work and don't have time to search.

As far as I know, Disney still owns ABC... and ESPN.

Seeing a close-up of an HD logo on the corner of one of the cameras reminded me that I’ve wondered if there are plans to go HD someday. Jeopardy and Wheel look very good in HD; Price could be interesting to see that way.

For what I saw a few minutes ago, CBS isn't airing it in HD. WFSB-DT (CBS) channel 33 (analog 3) of Hartford normally passes through all HD available from the network.

Meanwhile, "The View" is indeed in HD over at WTNH-DT (ABC) channel 10 (analog 8) of New Haven. It's too bad that the pass-through of the HD on this channel always looks terrible, both over-the air and on cable. :(

I'll stick with CBS in this case. :)

It was ABC Radio that was sold off....to Citadel Broadcasting. The ABC and ESPN television networks remain with the Mouse.

Barker hosted the show for 35 years. Some people are so close minded that they were just going to trash whoever else took over anyway. I remember how people also couldn't imagine The Tonight Show without Johnny Carson. However the program has stayed Number one for the past 15 years since Leno took over. Remember what happened after Conan took over for Letterman? I think Conan was about three days away from being fired. But now the show is better than ever and NBC wants Conan to take over for Leno!

Bottom line is that most people do not turn off the TV when a new host takes over. Typically people will bitch and complain for a while, but they will generally give the new person a chance. Drew said it best himself when he mentioned that the show is not about HIM. It's about the contestants! You've got to respect a guy who realizes that he doesn't make the show what it is. It's the people that "COME ON DOWN" that make the show something special!

So in closing.... Give Drew a chance. He's got HUGE shoes to fill and I think he's doing a pretty good job so far!

i replied some where in the middle of all this:
and, the same stuff is being said(again & again),

but what i wanted to add*but forgot to type:

(i) once DREW hits a milestone, his 1st full season; 100th ep.;
(?250,500,1000th,ep), or say his "5th" season, we ALL will be used to him...
enjoy him, and place away this "comparison" to Barker. *YES, i loooooooved BOB, too*
but, Carey was instructed-actually, "threatened" not to copy bob, by (Bob) himself.
he said this, kiddingly, on ellen, this week, (his first week of taking over as host).

(ii)
we are not the only one's viewing, TPiR:
now, this may be a little (loooooong way down) the road
but , maybe CBS is setting up for the next generation to
take in drew carey...

[it will be some thing when Carey wants to quit ----- and, the
same claims will be made "no one can Replace,Carey -it just won't be right without Drew....]

(i also agree: w/the post-er) that said, "any one" ( ryan sea-sick; john o'hurly; seinfeld, rosie, wayne brady, etc)
any of those, including carey, would be getting the same "they AREN'T BOB"!!!
....but, who asked the new host, to be bob barker jr...i think the is doing an awesome job!!!

Actually, when Letterman launched "The Late Show" on CBS, he was beating Leno for a while. However, shortly afterwards, Leno took the #1 spot and never looked back.

So in closing.... Give Drew a chance. He's got HUGE shoes to fill and I think he's doing a pretty good job so far!

Agree 100%

The only thing that has bugged me is when Drew asks the contestant if there is anyone the contestant wants to say hello. The contestant looks and acts confused. They are more focused on winning the game and not responding to personal stuff. I don't remember Bob asking about the personal hello's. Drew is probably personalizing and giving the contestants an opportunity to say more than the responses to a game. It may take time for the contestants to catch on to this, but it was painful to watch. Also, Drew still does not know how to hug or greet the contestants. That will come with experience. Bob knew how to read people and greet them accordingly.

And you have Hugh Grant to thank for that -- ahortly after his scandal in the mid-1990s, Grant appeared on Jay's show -- and gave it sky high ratings. His appearance helped generate more regular viewers for Jay's show.

I'm not old enough to remember Bob's first shows. But, I'll bet that he was not totally comfortable hugging people as well. Of course, Bob's first game show may have been in the 50's when nobody would dare hug a stranger! :D

Then again, I had noticed that Bob had started backing away from excited contestants. It happened VERY frequently over the past few years and looked awkward at times. I figured that Bob was getting frail and was afraid a contestant might hug him too hard and break something. :D

This comment I simply "DO NOT GET". I just watched an entire week of shows and I've seen an incredible amount of love and affection in that studio. Drew hugs every other contestant. One lady jumped on Drew yesterday and her feet left the ground for about 5 seconds. Go to CBS.com and click on the link up top where it says full episodes. Go watch all 5 shows of The Price Is Right from this week and then come back here and try to tell me that Drew doesn't know how to hug or greet contestants. It simply is not true. Drew has been Mr. Affection!

The point I was trying to make is that he seems too affectionate. I think he is trying too hard, or maybe he is establishing that he wants to be the affectionate host which is ok also. It just looked awkard in some cases.

I finally got to see Drew today, so my two cents:

On the affection issue, I won't argue that it looks
awkward but I think he's making an honest effort
to establish a rapport with the contestants; likewise,
I think that in time the contestants will respond to
the saying hello to friends and relatives; I'm not sure
that while spinning the Big Wheel is the place to do it,
since they're focused on getting into the Showcase;
maybe when they first come onstage.

Drew does need to slow down his delivery, and I think
that his constant "Welcome back to 'The Price Is Right'"
will cease once people realize this is still their old favorite,
just with a new face.

I've always thought that, especially in later years, Bob
was simply moving the show along, much like Bud Collyer
on "To Tell The Truth." On that show, when Garry Moore
took over, there was more lighthearted banter among the
panelists, and we really got to learn something about the
"central subjects." Drew at least looks to me like he's
really enjoying meeting the contestants.

One other thing: on today's show he forgot to remind the
two showcase bidders how close they had to come without
going over in order to win both showcases.

But as so many of you have said or hinted: Bob did this
for 35 years; Drew's been on only a week. But I'm still
confident that Drew will be able to handle this job.

Finally, the cosmetic changes, such as the colors of the
set, don't bother me at all. A little sprucing up should
take place from time to time.

My grade: A-.

Well, after reading all the comments on this board, I can't believe the level of analysis that some of you are going to about the changes to a TV game show. It's simply rediculous!

CBS has a show that, for the most part, people watch to see who will win, and have some fun during their midday, and CBS needed someone to take over, and keep the show fun and entertaining. Drew has done that. Yeah, he has some small style changes, but nobody is going to be exactly the same. For what they needed, he does the job, and he's filling VERY big shoes!

But some of these comments:
"Oh, he hugs the contestants" or "The set looks different" or "The music is different".
Know what? I watched a few minutes of it, and the show looked pretty much the same. The music was about the same, the set was rebuilt, but still very similar. The games were the same. The constestants were still as energetic as ever. The host was a coridal person who kept things light and made people happy. JUST LIKE HAS ALWAYS BEEN.

Really, those of us that have time to sit there and analyze every little thing? Folks, its just a game show, and I've never seen so much hype over nothing. Yeah, some people don't like Drew, and some people don't like Bob, but the truth is I COULDN'T TELL THE DIFFERENCE, which is likely what CBS wanted. The rest of us are just analyzing this waaay too much, and need to find sometihing else to do.

Besides, I hear CBS has a bigger problem with whose hosting their Evening newscast... Anyone?

I hadn't seen the Bob Barker vesion for more than a few minutes fior a long time, but did DVR Monday's premiere. I thought Drew did fine..he's more of an ad-libber than Bob was. A few miscues's, talking over the announcer but I think he seemed right at home.

Anyone remember Dennis James' nighttime version?

Perhaps so, and I plead guilty to some of this "overanalysis," but Drew's
assuming the host's job on TPIR has been hyped so much that, IMO, viewers are curious as to how he differs from Barker; you'd see the same thing if someone replaced Pat Sajak or Alex Trebek.

As for the news, I watch ABC and really don't care who replaces Katie,
who needs replacing. In my book they let the best-qualified replacement
for Rather (or, if you prefer, Schieffer) get away: John Roberts. And at
this point I can't think of anyone who could bring up CBS's ratings.

Just a few quick comments.

1. Bob always asked the contestants if they would like to say hello to anyone during the Wheel spin. The show moves at such a fast pace that it's pretty much the only opportunity for the contestants to say hi. You mine as well kill two birds with one stone. You have to wait for the damn thing to stop spinning anyway.

2. They jam a lot more commercials in these days than they used to. Back in the 70's there would be a lot more banter between Bob and the contestants simply because they had more time. These days there is only 38 minutes of actual show. They've got to fit a lot in during that window. That's why the show appears so rushed these days. It's not all Drew's fault. He's being told the whole show to speed things up. It's a constant race against time.

3. The Price Is Right is more than a Game Show. It is 70 Game shows wrapped into one! They've got 70 different pricing games for Drew to learn. They are having him learn 5 new ones each week. That's a lot to have thrown at you at once. Bob had 35 years to learn those games. Drew has to learn them all in about 3 months! Give the guy a break. That's not easy. it's amazing that he is doing as well as he is.

4. Very slight changes to the set and music. Compared to what they could have done, you are lucky they changed as little as they did.

That is all.

I'm a long time TPIR fan, and I love Bob Barker. I just watched the first Drew Carey show online, and I have to say I think he will be OK. I think in time if he stays with it, he can do as good a job as Bob did. Thank god they did not pick that pig Rossie!!!
