the New Rewind 103.5/104.3

Somehow I knew the FM talk URLs were a ruse. ;D

At least I don't have to reset my buttons. ;)

I'd say this new station is much more Rhythmic friendly when compared to Rewing in Cincy or Chicago.
BTW, they ARE playing some Rap titles such as Young MC's "Bust A Move", or the Rap/Dance hybrid that is "Pump Up The Jam" by Technotronic.

ok, I listened for about an hour. Good songs, good imaging. But with the Brew, Gen X, Sunny, 93.3, QFM, Mix 107.9, how much more Bon Jovi can we handle?

From what I've heard...

I have a lot of likes/dislikes mixed with a lot of concerns.

First of all, it is sad to see Smooth Jazz leave the Columbus market. It was around for 15 years, and though it got worse, it ran its course and survived longer than most. Unfortunately, that format is not a PPM player and is dying slowly. Believe it or not, there are a lot of smooth jazz fans still. Smooth Jazz has a lot of loyal listeners, and those listeners could pick up Sirius XM or begin listening to CD's.

Imaging - although there aren't a ton rotating - not as important for the launch

Commercial Free Launch!

Two signals to hear it which could help build the audience

They're risky enough to try a niche format! That's two niche formats in the last month.

This is a format that could potentially bring listeners to that signal AND can sell well

No jingles

This is going to be a major issue with Sunny in the building. Mix can co-exist, but Sunny!? hmm... I get AC across the board isn't doing all that well. I've heard 933 in offices more than Sunny 95, but still, neither producing the numbers AC should have. This is Adult Hits with an AC feel and will just steal occasional listeners from Sunny 95. However, maybe Saga wants all of the women listeners. If they don't like what's on Sunny, time for Rewind. Want it more current? Check out our Adult CHR, Mix 1079. So other than Sunny, this station's competition is 933 and Classic Hits 1039.

The music is too soft to co-exist with Sunny. I'm hearing people say rhythmic-leaning oldies and what not, but that's not what I'm hearing. I hear a few rhythmic surprises, but I haven't heard any Young MC or Technotronic type tunes. This station is MORE gold based than Rewind in Cinci. Cinci will throw in the 90s and 00s for flavor mixed with the 80s. Also, they use Feel Good Favorites from the 80s and More. Rewind Columbus is using Columbus' Greatest Hits which technically implies classic hits/oldies like WGRR. I understand that Bonneville owns the others, but Rewind Columbus is using the same logo and same voicegirl. I'd at least use the "feel good" moniker somewhere. If I were them, more rhythmic oldies. If you liked Star 1079, Rewind is the station for you!

They should overlap dry sweepers overtop the intros, but this is the first day. We'll see what they do imaging/jingles-wise.

Concerns

This has such potential, but there is a lot of competition. The women already have 933, Sunny, WNCI, Magic 98.9, The Brew, Mix 1079 ALREADY which are women-targeted AC formats. Most of these have good signals.

They have two singles, but both at 4200 watts, one going more north, the other south. They do cover Columbus, but it's not the easiest to pickup on an analog radio. It's not as bad as I thought though!

The biggest concern, besides it being a direct competitor to Sunny is that Saga is going to let it slip like they do with Mix. They need to push it like Cinci did. The biggest key to Rewind is that it's going to need to do TV promotion, billboards, and have live and local jocks w/ remotes. Likely? No. Jocks? Possibly, but tracked. If they want this to work, it's going to need to be done right. A format like Smooth Jazz and Hot AC can sit and build cume because of the popularity of the format. In fact, I feel like Rewind is the type of station to go to if nothing is on if you're already a loyal listener of Sunny or 933. With the right music selection, Rewind could grab its loyal crew though. This format here will need to take time to build. If Saga lets this sit around, they're not going to see the results they want. Cinci and Chicago have the tools including a good signal, Columbus, not so much.

We shall see! Things are surely getting interesting here! Rewind was the last thing I was expecting to get dropped on 1035, PLUS 1043!

Rewind doesn't have a prayer, especially if it hopes to go up against "Gen-X" (and in this case, signal strength will win the day, as it usually does). It only complements the rest of the existing stations in Saga/Columbus cluster... and... well, that's it.

I feel for you guys. Honestly, I do. C-Bus deserves better than another like-formatted station that already parses out the limited audience for AC even further. At least it doesn't have a dumb moniker like "Gen-X," although "Rewind" is just as limiting.

The good news is that we are *finally* getting some of the excellent fairly-mainstream formats that have *always* passed Columbus by until now.

The bad news is that -- unlike everywhere else getting such formats -- here they get stuck on those #$@%! rimshot signals that will limit their market penetration and ratings. In fact, now that I've started paying attention to 106.7 -- which *should* be about the best rimshot that's not on the Dispatch tower, I've been unpleasantly surprised by how sorely deficient that signal is in large areas of the market that are well within their theoretical 60db contour.

Too bad Saga doesn't have any other city-grade signals for Rewind, and that CC continues to dedicate its full city-grade 93.3 signal to its one remaining "me too!" format -- WLZT's 3-share AC -- instead of Gen-X or something else.

Rewind and Gen X are two different audiences though. Rewind hits those 40+ women, while Gen X hits the late 20's - 30 year olds. Gen X is a cool station, but doesn't seem like an at-work type to me. Rewind works for the office very well.

Nu, good point, We are getting the formats everyone else has gotten. 1067's signal is decent, but could be better.

Gen X on 933 wouldn't make sense when they want AC to be on the bigger signal, since it is supposed to have bigger numbers. I'd wish for Rewind to be put on 94.7 especially if Sunny begins to go downhill. Unlikely though. Sunny is heritage, but I think Rewind is better musically. I don't like the idea of the two co-existing in the same building, but Sunny is dying, plus Rewind is MUCH more upbeat than Cinci. Cinci gets away with more ballads. I think Rewind has to keep it upbeat and feeling good because of Sunny.

Hmm... ???

This is basically what Alan Goodman told AllAccess today.

"We will be the first in COLUMBUS and perhaps in the country where all of our multiple assets, our entire cluster, will be directed to reach women."

Now, if "Rewind" can appeal to 35-49 year old women, maybe I can pick up some pointers from Mr. Goodman.

I agree with parts of this, not so much with other parts. Regardless, it's an impressive analysis.

One thing that makes this quite distinct from both Sunny and 93.3 is a very different texture -- namely consistently upbeat. I would guess the reason they are avoiding "feel good" is that Sunny uses that (or something similar) sometimes. But for them it means some soft plus some "gently upbeat." And you're sure not going to hear, say, the Violent Femmes on Sunny or 93.3 outside specialty programs.

I am surprised at some of the sappier-side-of-the-70's songs I've heard, like Andy Gibb. Chicago's Rewind seems to steer clear of that kind of cringe-inducing stuff. But at least there hasn't been a whole lot of it

As most 80s music is, well... 25-30 years old by now, that music was probably played when said target audience was in their early-to-late teens. So maybe he has a point.

Unlikely indeed!  And as if to prove it, just a few days ago Sunny 95 Park was unveiled in northern Upper Arlington.

Good points! It's supposed to be the 35+ listeners' CHR. It should sound good with jingles and jocks. Rewind 949 in Cinci is one of the best sounding stations in the country.

Also, yes... I was up at Saga a few days ago and I saw that. Sunny isn't going anywhere, but do you honestly think Rewind would do bad at 94.7? Nope.

I agree, although there would be a painful transition period given that expectations built over many years would be very violated.

lovejamminoldies said:
Then, shouldn't they program Rewind a little more rhythmic and add some more 90s and 00s like Cinci? Or keep it as is since it's upbeat?
As for the rhythmic part I guess that begs the question of what kind of (if any) music research they've done. And also whether Saga has learned anything from the pre-currency PPM's (if they subscribe).

As for the era covered, maybe one reason they're keeping out of the 90's+ is that they're also trying to be the de-facto Classic Hits station (oldies-type) for the market. If so, there's only so far they can stretch it era-wise.
