The sad final end of Robin and Maynard

I pretty sure they did well at KZOK for 7 years (1994 to 2001 if I recall correctly). I seem to remember Curelop coming on the air to talk about their ratings, especially when they were on in the afternoons for a short while after Bob Rivers going KZOK. Of course this was before podcasts, so I really enjoyed having them on in the afternoons when I could listen to their whole show. Never been a big morning person.

I admit that they didn't seem to be a great fit at KQBZ, however.

LOL look a decade at KISW mostly #1 (25-54), seven years at KXRX mostly #1 about the same at KZOK always top 3 then The Buzz!

That is one hell of a run, and the reason R&M were G O O D personality radio period. They cut new roads and were always engaging and fun. I am proud to have been next to them at most of their great career. Seattle radio was better for having Robin and Maynard a simple fact. Go back and check their ratings, anyone here would love to have those numbers right kiddies?

Be safe,

Crowski

Robin and Maynards show on KXRX was the first show I followed on a regular basis. Found them entertaining as hell, unlike so many shows that are broadcast today. I have only been on the listener side of this business so I can't comment on the dollars and cents some of you thrive on. What was offered on their website still afforded us fans something of which we thoroughly enjoyed, Robin, Maynard and the entire cast that made their show what it became.

Could have simply been the generation I grew up in, but the discussion between music was something that made me laugh at times and wonder at others. Not everyone listens to the radio specifically for the music, the jocks made the show. I wasn't around to hear their broadcasts prior to the early 90's. The years when the X was the station that drew in the listeners that comprised its audience of people I knew, worked with and I was around.

Robin and Maynard, your faithful will miss you.

Robin and Maynard (IMO) were the best. We in the Seattle market were very fortunate to have some great personalties and programs through the years - from Crow and West, to Langen and West, Burl Barer (ok give me a break, a guilty pleasure from my High School days) and of course the mighty Mad Fab and Maynar-do.

I miss Robin and Maynard's program to this day...and while it's looking more and more like we may never hear them on the air again, I'm still holding some hope. Their brand of humor - sometimes subtle and sophisticated, sometimes delightfully sophmoric and playing to my inner child - is irreplacable.

Thanks Mr. Crow. I couldn't have found a sharper pin to pop these "experts" bubble with on Robin & Maynard.

It's a clash of two mindsets: The ones who know Seattle radio and what made this market one of the most unique in the nation. And those who wouldn't know what a unique market was if they tried. All they want is more $$$. Being a suckup may help their personal careers in the short term, but in the long run, they're cannibalizing their own future.

I'll try to illustrate this as clearly as I can.

Today, it's HUGE, pie in the sky, You're trippin', HA-HAW!, profit margins. The corporate cronies had it their way for the last ten years. And look how fabulous local radio is now! The way these "experts" talk about it, you'd think the iPod, Internet/Satellite radio, Music Choice, et al had never been invented. it's a big game...a STRATEGY session...woooo.....it's gotta be something BIG.....then the rumors start churning.....boy......this is better than sex!.....Then finally, the big day arrives.....and POOF!

We are offered:

(INSERT FREQUENCY HERE) The (INSERT ANIMAL/LANDSCAPE FORMATION/PERSONAL GESTURE/GALAXY OBJECT/TEMPERATURE/REGULAR OBLECT/PERSON'S NAME/TYPE OF PERSON HERE)

Or (INSERT ANIMAL/LANDSCAPE FORMATION/PERSONAL GESTURE/GALAXY OBJECT/TEMPERATURE/REGULAR OBJECT/PERSON'S NAME/TYPE OF PERSON HERE) @ (INSERT FREQUENCY HERE) And don't forget that "@" part! That means we're BIG, Up and coming in your faces (or at least enough to know what Shift-2 means on a keyboard.) Or just (INSERT ANIMAL/LANDSCAPE FORMATION/PERSONAL GESTURE/GALAXY OBJECT/TEMPERATURE/REGULAR OBJECT/PERSON'S NAME/TYPE OF PERSON HERE) (INSERT FREQUENCY HERE)

And one of the typical following formats:

AC (Hot or Mild/Soft)
CHR
Country
Classic Rock
Alternative
AAA
Active Rock
Smooth Jazz
Classic/"Variety" Hits
Sports

And people who listen to the radio.....they are SOOOO dumb! They'll just fall right into it. And then they will wonder why, when they're visiting their Aunt Sadie that that station in Clinton, Wisconsin imitates that station in Seattle......(ETC) Shouldn't there be a national LAW against that?

(Personally, I think there SHOULD be.) But whatever happened to CALL LETTERS? The very soul and identity of some of the most SUCCESSFUL (still) STATIONS?

We know KISW. We know KZOK. And KMPS. And even KJR-FM.....go figure......Lord knows we remember KXRX, KYYX, KSEA, et al..........

And the broadcasting behemoths wonder why it's very, actually VERY hard to find a dedicated terrestrial commercial radio listener anymore?

THEY ALL SOUND THE SAME!! Just throw in some canned "carefully researched" - yeah, RIGHT - format and just sit back and expect the $$$ to come flowing in like a flooding River.....@ 106.7.....

A few years ago, you had a big debate over the iPod and how that is turning away radio listeners. But funny thing is, even with the BETTER sounding cassette tape Walkman in the '80s, no station ever complained. Because they had REAL LIVE LOCAL PERSONALITIES. People who KNEW Seattle, what made Seattle work. Because they were FROM Seattle (or anywhere in the Puget Sound area. Or spent a great deal of time here.)

The trouble here is too many grandiose expectations from conglomerates and markets unwilling (or have found other alternatives) to meet them.

Now, for those who ever need to ponder why whenever Bongwater says "Radio sucks". THERE'S your answer.............

Hmmmm...'Art' vs 'Commerce'...and the beat goes on. The reason folks continue to hold the great work of R&M in such esteem is, for a long long run they managed to combine the 2--and that's a gig that's a lot harder than it looks.

And Maynard is still cookin': http://www.recordbinroulette.com/

'Record Bin Roulette' rocks...he makes a great duo w/John Kessler. Check it out, fellow Radio-heads!

Do not let this happen to crowski he is an ICON all the way back to KOL days and if crowski disappears I am destroying my Marantz

Regarding KXRX the story Steve West has said in the past is a little different. In a nut shell it involved the FCC, Disney and ownership rules. He didn't mention $$$ issues although I'm sure it played in somewhere. But what the hell, sadly it's over.

At the time R&M were at KXRX I was at another radio group out of the area, but I was privy and knew many of the management members at Shamrock corporate, including some of the philosophy that kept R&M there for quite a while. Like many group owners, Shamrock corporate management relied on the local manager and program director to manage their budget and make the programming calls. The GM (who by the way is a great guy) at KXRX truly believed in R&M from a personal perspective and believed that if they just kept at it, they would eventually climb in ratings. All the while, R&M built more tenure and so went their compensation. Eventually the cost of keeping the show on the air with mediocre, ever declining ratings became just as difficult to justify paying what they were commanding. Add in some infighting behind the scenes and the handwriting was on the wall. The run ended when the Disney family decided to sell the Shamrock radio properties, and there was nobody to protect them further.

From what I understand KQBZ took them on in an attempt to drive some quick ad dollars with advertisers who used to advertise or remember R&M previously on KZOK and KXRX. The idea was to bring in the male demos, primarily with Robin's rather sultry style. The problem is the show picked up where they left off at KXRX with recycled material, just on another station. When the performance and ratings were not what was expected, the infighting started up again and bad blood formed between management and the show.

I'm sure there are insiders with more detail, but the reality is the shows ratings pretty well tracked with what went on over there. It was truly a situation where the inmates ran the asylum for a while and ultimately that formula never pans out.

Man, ain't that the truth. Crowski is the last of the originals. When I need an R&M fix I play my Final Days of KXRX cds. Sure glad I grabbed a copy when they were on E-bay years ago. I wonder if Robin would get her panties in a bunch these days if she knew that. She didn't like anybody having copies of her and Maynard. Never could figure that one out.

Robin and Dave have moved to Montana, Maynardo soon to wed and I am doing three jobs at the Mighty KZOK, with my old buddy Mike West doing Breakfast with the Beatles Show Sunday mornings which is a BONUS.

Mike has never sounded better and our friendship has rekindled and is warm a fuzzy ;D

I know t\R&M appreciate all the great words, it was a sweet era in Seattle radio never to be duplicated. Dave and I are working on several projects outside radio.

They say the lowest form of conversation is "remember when," but WOW what a when those days were!

Be safe,

Crowski

Happy that you continue at KZOK. Tell Dave all his tennis buddies miss him! You need
to get back on the courts!
From what I hear, Dave's now playing indoors and has all he can handle from a Montana
Highschooler.

Best to you!!
