The Surf 94.9

To clarify the comments I made on another thread, I posted there because I learned about a new station there. Now I know that station is Surf 94.9. I was wondering if it would be as "good" a station in terms of community involvement and a music mix that listeners thought was better than other stations', as well as whatever other characteristics made WNMB one of the Grand Strand's best.

I didn't know firsthand what WNMB was like, having never listened in my motel room because the signal doesn't reach that far, and having rarely listened in the car because I tend to be on WEZV. I have found WLGI interesting at times too.

I wonder if this will make Oldies Sunny 103 WSYN play more Beach Oldies? At one time years ago and for several years, they played ALOT of beach music Oldies. That was in the early to mid 1990`s. I think that they were even a BIG sponsor of the year Cammy Awards-0 Carolina Beach Music awards in that period. I know as a student at Coastal Carolina in the late 1980`s/early 1990`s, I remember when WSYN-FM Sunny 106.5 went all Oldies in May of 1990. They had a Beach Music show every weeknight fron 7 PM- 11 PM. Anybody remember his name? It is somewhere in my head, but I can`t quite remeber? I know that Judy`s House Of Music in North Myrtle Beach was a BIG sponsor of that show!

Isn't Sunny 103.1 just airing that True Oldies network? They aren't as bright as they once used to be when on 106.5, Cumulus stations here are a mess.

I will have to listen to the live streaming of WSYN-FM Sunny 103 Oldies to see what is going on..... They were airing "The True Oldies" Scott Shannon feed from March 2008 until spring of this past year. Then, it appeared that are programming was in house. I know that they even hired a new P.D.!!! Is he gone???? Is the True Oldies feed back now????

On Sunny's website it only lists one DJ. I think the guy your talking about worked for two Cumulus stations.

Just my two cents if Cumulus were smart they would have left Sunny on 106.5 and made it a format like y102.5 in Chareston, SC. Country on 106.5 doesn't hurt the Gator, but a AC to compete with Star 92.1 would be a good.

I remember when I used to visit the Myrtle Beach area that WNMB was on 105.5 and 105.9 FM. I was wondering if Bill will make a change and move WNMB back to FM on 94.9 FM? Hmm?

I remember WNMB-FM 105.7 in the late 1980`s and early 1990`s when I was in college at Coastal Carolina. Billy Smith (The Legend) was the Morning Man. He also had a Oldies and Beach Show on Sunday Afternoons. The station was ac, but played ALOT of oldies and beach. Their slogan back then was "The best of the 60`s, 70`s and today". Billy Smith left the station in early 1990 after something happened to him and some lady at the Night Club 2001. Billy was fired and went to Power 98. WNMB was a cool station!

Dick Biondi mornings and Billy Smith afternoons. That's a great one-two punch! Billy was about the funniest air talent I ever worked with, or ever heard eanywhere else.

Hardly. The last time I was in Myrtle Beach it was mostly 80s. In fact, it sounded more like a mainstream AC than Star.

They seem to sound like a classic hits station with some songs you hear on Wave 104.1, and Star 92.1 is more of a Hot AC.

What I meant was they're in about the same position Charleston's WXLY was in before Sunny 96.9 went country, and since Star isn't really mainstream maybe the same sort of evolution could take place. Movin' has the rhythmic audience. There was a time when 107.1 FM could have done the rock-leaning classic hits, but I'm guessing they don't want to go back to that. WKZQ's current success may just be temporary.

107.1 was classic hits before, it was called 107.1 The Sound. Then when Qantum Communications
purchased 104.9 Bob-FM they flipped 107.1 to Urban AC as Q 107.1 which didn't do well. Which leaves them where they are now at Rock 107 they seem to be doing alright better then KZQ. Wonder if Next Media would ever flip WKZQ?

WKZQ actually did better than Rock 107 this last time.

True, but what are the demo ratings?

How do we get those?

The Surf will be on-the-air at any time now. Studios are installed and functioning at the WNMB building in North Myrtle Beach. Computers are loaded with Surf jingles and image material. Lots of Carolina Beach music is loaded and ready to play. The only thing we are waiting on is completion of some repairs to the FM transmitter. It had been without power since January and despite our efforts to bring it up carefully and slowly, it blew a couple of rectifiers. We hope to have the repairs done and be on this Thursday. As to programming, I'll host two hours in the morning, Ted Bell will be mid-days, and we have a special surprise afternoon host arriving soon. Evenings and overnights will be "The Surf after dark".
