The Zone heads in a new direction

Also, hire a REAL producer, not some groupie or intern/promotion guy.

The guy that's doing that for them is a great guy, has a big heart, and is very talented for a newcomer. Remember, we all had to start somewhere, and he fortunately got a big break in a major market, which he deserves. And the listeners love him, if you've listened at all, which it sounds like you have. Btw Creighton, aren't you like a hundred anyway, so you're kinda outta the demographic ain't ya? Maybe stick with critiques of your Amos and Andy discs on yer Victrola...

Hire an established morning show. A morning show that is already successful in another market. Seems like the Zone is always trying to make their existing air talent do mornings. In other words: "Let's put the night guy and the weekend chick on Mornings! It'll be brilliant!"

Hire a clever, fun, entertaining morning team from another market. Sacramento is not NY. Think Indianapolis. Think more midwest, less LA or NY. Also, hire a REAL producer, not some groupie or intern/promotion guy.

Midwest?? how dare you compare Sacramento to the Midwest....UGH! Have you heard that god awful accent?

I listened to a little bit of the Zone Morning show today and thought it was more entertaining than any other morning show they've had on The Zone. It was actually funny.

In a related post, I read this morning that Hill Jordan got a morning gig at a station in San Luis Obispo.

Ok, if I have this story straight, they are running with a guy playing a character? I do some consulting work, and live an hour north of Philadelphia. I haven't had a chance to hear this show, but outside of generating a bit of street talk, is a character the way to build a morning show? What sort of show is this? I'm going to try and listen to the stream, but is this a situation where people on message boards (like this one) toss around praise because a station is doing something different instead of throwing around praise because a show is actually good?

This has got to be a placeholder until they get a new AM show in place. Has to be.

Yes, Sacramento is about as Midwestern as you can get. San Francisco is 90 miles and 20 years away. That's why Sacramento is such a big "test market" for products before they roll out nationally. Because it's a perfect cross-section of America, demographically.

The Zone has had alot of transition over the past few years on air and behind the scene. I think the new PD has definately done a great job turning the sound of the station around to be a fun adult sounding Top 40/Hot AC.
As far as the talent, there are alot of "lifers" in this market and the Zone has Monica in middays and Keith in afternoons, both have been in almost every day part on the station but i think have finally found the right slots. The night guy "C" is perfect for the available audience and i heard is a pretty good DJ out at the clubs. Morning has and always will be a thorn in the Zone's side unless they spend some money to bring in some REAL talent. This market is wide open for a female based morning show!!! But will CBS ever spend the cash or is syndication on the way? Can you say Kidd Kradick

Hey Brad...remember when Kidd Chris was on KXOA and he had an .08 18-34?

That was AWESOME!!!

Sacramento is pretty "midwest." Seeing as I've worked in both areas of the country.

Has Renaldo worked elsewhere?

They used that "Renaldo" gimmick in Phoenix when KZON made the flip from "Free FM" to Rhythmic Top 40 last year (2007). The only exception was that he spent 24 hours locked in the studio and telling everybody to sign a petition to free then-jailed Paris Hilton and played her music.

That must be why he's in philly and you're not...haha

He's in Philly because he's done a great job of networking. He is to be commended for his hard work. He kissed Stern's backside for a few years, and it paid off for him.

I was just in Philly, and if his show is what Philly wants, good for Philly. And good for him.

But the fact remains he was a failure on KXOA, and he's doing a watered down version of radio done by far more talented individuals than he, well over a decade ago. It works for him. It's not unique. Nor, is it original. He fills a void. He works hard. And good for him.

Brad...you're not in our industry. You're a kid who let someone exploit them on the radio. In my experience with you, you're a good kid. Misguided, and uneducated as to what our industry is all about, but seem decent face-to-face.

Your obssession with a guy who uses you for his own gain is not something to be proud of. It's pitiful. But, if it works for you...by all means...have at it. I'm nobody to tell you how to live your life. Just know..people don't respect you, nor do they think you're credible. They're laughing at you. And the joke stopped being funny a long time ago.

Kidd Chris is certainly not the answer for the Zone. And time will tell if he's even the right guy for WYSP. We'll see.

Whatever decisions are made at the Zone, the stations definitely going to do better now that they don't have a morning show that tanks. The AMs set the tone for the rest of the dayparts.

Ps. Save the love/hate thing about Kidd Chris for another thread, k. We're all tired of Brad and his love fest.

Now that they don't have a morning show that tanks? How long has this new guy been on? Don't you think it's a bit premature to say the new show won't tank? I was finally able to stream the show for a bit and it's playing up every negative homosexual stereotype there is. I guess it's a good novelty, but a ratings winner? Good god, I hope they have follow up plan. I will say it has me intrigued enough to want to see where they go from here.

Latino I agree with ya. Trying to create a legitamate morning show around a character? You cannot be serious! It may work for a couple weeks but the legs are as long as the dad from little people big world. And can we please stop with the rediculous Kid Chris talk? Are you kidding me? Kidd Chris? You really think the ZONE audience would get for one minute his rehashed 1989 brand of humor? Besides the powers that be at the ZONE and CBS would never go for it.

Not to mention that I don't think Kidd Chris is leaving WYSP in Philly. I haven't seen the numbers, but if I had to guess he's going to eventually give Preston and Steve a run for their money. Honestly both shows are good in different ways, but that is Philly talk.

So, is it Reynaldo? Who is the best local Sacramento morning show? I am familiar with Jason, Kelly, and Gavin (on the KDND) because they were from my backyard, but what shows in the market are worth listening to? If I was going to stream the best three morning shows in Sacramento, who would I listen to on the PC?

Actually, I was speaking of the old morning show minus Shawn. It tanked.

That KDND morning show is absolutely terrible... both they and the middayer sound better suited for Chico or Bakersfield than a Top30 market. I know I'm not their target demo but it's just amateur-ish radio... Kidd Kraddick, who someone else mentioned in this thread, is what a CHR morning show should aspire to.

My top 3 morning shows in this market are probably Carolla, Mark & Brian, and Armstrong & Getty... not much listenable local morning radio here.

Thank you mom. My sentiments exactly. If I here about Kidd Chris ??? one more time on a thread that has nothing to do with the topic, I think I'll dose out on a Vicodin Smoothie. Only employees of jacked up or decent radio stations need apply... :p

As I'm not in the market and haven't listened, nor do I have any working knowledge of the current competitive situation, I abstain.

I don't know what will work...but I'm fairly certain what won't
:p

when i spoke with some folks at kzzo last year, it sounded like they were getting ready to tweak the format and go CHR, and take out KDND after the wee contest. Things fell through and there was a mass exodus of staff (or a black friday or something) and it never happened. With the recent change in logo, van graphics, and such- i feel like maybe they were waiting for some money that never came, and now it finally has. My guess is that they'll start adding more rhythmic stuff and lean towards CHR, but without the heavy hip hop and such, stick with more mainstream hip hop like mariah carey, fergie, black eyed peas and avoid the lil waynes, Mary J. Bliges, and Flo Ridas. (If you'll notice, in the past year they've snuck more and more OutKast, and Bob Marley into the mix). Kinda like WDVD in Detroit, but with a little more rhythm.

They're going to go after the (dare i say it) vanilla female set that KDND kinda puts off with the harder hip hop and rap. They've sorta been aiming for them all along but haven't quite hit the sweet spot.
