Time ticking for FREE FM, JACK or BOTH

what might replace "Jack"

That's my question. It sure as heck won't be Oldies (obviously) so what
gaping format hole is there here? I'm not sure I could say what it is.

:D

Jack is in the top ten 25-54. Discussion on the
BUSINESS of radio based on 12+ numbers is
just wrong. Take your wife to a movie or somethin'.

Smooth Jazz
A real Alt Rock station

None of those (with the exception of smooth jazz) are likely to do as much as 2.0 in Dallas/Fort Worth. They're all niche formats that would likely do worse than Jack is currently doing.

I think Dallas really do miss its Smooth Jazz. I'm talking about beautiful music that keeps everybody busy. I believe it'll be going over to 105.3, which was home to KQZY-Which used to be an elevator music station. as far as 100.3, I think it will become an FM-Version of KRLD, one DFW's best news stations

That keeps everybody busy? How about "that makes everyone sleepy"?

I agree on the "please no beautiful music!". If you think the Oldies format
has trouble generating revenue because of an aging audience, BM would
be 10x as difficult.

But a properly programmed Smooth Jazz- definitely room.

More on Kenny G, Larry Carlton, & Joe Sample-And less on Phil Collins, Sting, & Vanesa Williams. Houston's got KHJZ, so I think DFW will re-name one of the station's calls to mirror KHJZ's Music. Does KDJZ ring a bell? I Believe DFW will soon feel The Wave.

Oh boy"return of "the Wave"... on AM? A stop gap format.

Citadel will never move WBAP to FM because of WBAP's ratings dominance over the other AMs and the fact that the only good FM they have is KSCS and they are in the Top 5 again in DFW. Even though KSCS is only doing good because the Wolf is doing so badly! If Entercom were running this Wolf they would return to the Top again.

I'm 31 and I know where the AM band is...it is a place for News/Talk and Sports only, but that fact has been consistent for a very long time now. Younger people tend to avoid politics so moving News/Talk to FM wouldn't help most in the format at all as far as the money demo and any smart programmer will tell you that.

News/Talk will eventually move to FM inmasse in about 20 or 30 years, but signal issues keep the vast majority on AM...WBAP for instance covers alot more ground than KSCS even during the day...at night they cover most of the 48 states...as far north as Iowa and Minnisota and the Rocky Mountain states in the West to Appalachia in the East.

Those promoting moving these signal AM blowtorches to inferior FM signals need to stood up in front of a firing squad...mere stupidity...

Does KDJZ ring a bell?

No, but K'F'JZ does.

Whatever happens, they will need someone who knows the format to program it. During the pre-Bret
Michael/APD days when Kurt was programming it by himself, the Oasis was nearly unlistenable because someone put Kenny G in heavy rotation, and usually the same song each time. And it wasn't just Kenny G...it was nearly a Top 40 approach to Smooth Jazz, with the same songs played so often daily that you could nearly set your clock to it. When Bret became APD, that's when the crossover songs came in. And really, was there enough new SJ coming out then to fill a full day/week of programming? The jazzy R&B crossover brought in a lot of older, affluent black audience while keeping most of its existing audience...which made KOAI beat KLUV and KVIL a time or two in 12+. Of course, these days, where you have VOCALISTS forever linked to Smooth Jazz (Norahhh Jones comes to mind,) it's hard to ignore the singers just to limit a format to instrumentals. Besides, I think most listeners enjoy hearing a familiar-yet-compatible tune every so many songs.

Speaking for me, I'm not promoting moving any AM stations to any FM signal. Like you, I'm 31, and can find the AM band easily on my car radio (not so much at home, but that's just because my wife can't stand news/talk). I just figured if CBS moved KRLD to FM (or simulcast on FM), Citadel would probably respond in some way with WBAP.

I do enjoy AM signal strength: about six months ago I was stuck in Austin "rush" hour traffic wondering why all I was getting was DFW traffic reports. Duh. Had it on KRLD all the way from Fort Worth. Shoot, there are days driving along I-20 in southwest Dallas I can't pick up KDMX. Come to think of it, that's not all bad. :)

That's not quite what I was saying. A beautiful music station would be nice to have in this market, sort of like a cross between KMEZ and KOAX. What I meant was, beautiful music is relaxing, not "busy".

100.3 The Wave and 105.3 K-Rock?.....

I agree with you Mike. My beef with the Oasis was purely the music. When the Oasis was on 106.1, you never heard the same song twice in a day. They played the best songs off the CD's that came out. The downfall of the station was adding the R&B to the rotation. If I wanted to hear R&B then why not listen to those stations that played that type of music. The Oasis left those fans of pure smooth jazz out in the cold. If someone wants to bring the format back to the DFW airwaves, then make sure you leave the R and B to KSOC or KRNB. Give us pure smooth jazz. Go back to the 106.1 Oasis, not the 107.5 Oasis.....

The Oasis first signed on as new age as I recall in the late 80's. That would be enjoyable to hear again.

I enjoy XM's AudioVisions a lot and have wondered if a terrestrial station would be viable with a New Age format?

100.3 The Wave and 105.3 K-Rock

No Flippin' Way! I'd love to see KOAI (The Oasis) back on the air at 105.3; And K-Rock would would be on at 100.3. The Oasis started first at 106.1-which is now Kiss-FM, Ironically it started out as a new age station-which was popular 10-15 years ago. It was good music to hear in Doctor's Offices. New Age simply just fade out as C-Jazz tries to morph out into playing R & B. I believe if they want to get into the arena, they need to leave the soft rock/R&B over to K-VIL or KRNB.
