I remember when KUTE 101.9 (cute 102) changed to KMPC-FM around '88..JJ Jackson (of MTV fame) was doing afternoons... I called him up to tell him they should be playing Guns and Roses - Welcome to the Jungle, he agreed and played it...there was also some "Howard wanna be" guy on at night (in the days before Howard was ever on in LA) I used to call him up and argue... telling him he was a poor imitation...which he was.... this thread is turning into radio memories..lol

I was mainly "on the other side" at 710 KMPC as an assistant sports producer in those days, but occasionally I would get recruited as an emergency board op for both KMPC-FM and The Edge, mainly Sunday morning shows like "The Lost Lennon Tapes".

JJ Jackson was a damn fine human being and an excellent Program Director. The Edge did not get the chance that it deserved. The plug was pulled way too early.

The Howard-wannabe's name was Guy Kemp. Story was (never confirmed, to be fair) that a friend in NY was sending him Stern tapes. Guy recruited me to be an occasional character named Chick Magnet, who I think was supposed to be the rough equivelant of Fred the Elephant Boy. I made one appearance with the "troupe", on a live remote from a club on the Sunset Strip. I guess stage fright may have overtaken both of us, as the planned "skit" did not go well. The character still existed for awhile, but never did a remote again. Just as well. :)

Before Indie, 103.1 was a dance station called KDL 103.1. Entravision also operated another KDL - 106.7 in Texas at about the same time. Entravision kept the KDLD/KDLE call signs when it flipped to Indie and they're still in place today.

Guy Kemp...thats it..wow I never would have remembered his name..wonder what ever happened to him...

I was a big Howard fan at the time..having just moved from Connecticut...I used to have friends send me tapes as well..then I would blast them at my condo in Irvine as I did work in the garage..needless to say this went over big with the old republicans living in the area...lol

According to the L.A. Radio site, Guy Kemp is now doing voiceover work, but does not say where he is located.

The last I had heard about him before looking at the site, he was working in Las Vegas radio.

Here come's a "what if?" question. Would the indie format gain traction on a bigger stick?

If Indie leaves the air, my dream ;D would be to have much of their playlist merge with that of 100.3 The Sound's playlist. Maybe have Jonesy's Jukebox on at night (if Jonesy is OK with that).
