Trio goes dark!

Tibbs, yeah, it is.

Here in Tally I used to work for WCVC 1330, which was a basic studio in a mobile home, with a little concrete block building behind it. During the few years I managed it I had the studio trailer roof redone, painted the trailer, had the xmitter building re-re-roofed, had a new fence installed around the tower, new tower put in and had the thing making money.

Now there is an EWTN feed in the concrete block building, studio is all boarded up, but nothing inside.
Went by there a few months ago and it just made me sad, since I was there 13 years total.

Did arrange to buy the music library, and got it before the place was vandalized.

But thanks, Charlie. Think I'll just call Mr. Green and chat and save the time. I have two young grandsons I would rather see during that short of a time.

Alan,

That is a real shame what you described that happened to WCVC. Unfortunately, that appears to be the "norm" with many AM stations around the country now. In Ocala, my first station where I became program director and afternoon drive personality back in the '70s, WTMC, later becoming WCFI, went dark in 2004, never returning to the air. The license was eventually canceled in 2008. At one time WTMC was the number one station and was billing over $60k every month and later sold for $1.1 million in 1980. By 2004, as WCFI, it was billing next to nothing. I was heart-broken the day I went by the transmitter / tower site and saw the three towers once use to broadcast the 5kw 1290 signal had been plowed down. I had a personal attachment to that station as I am sure you can relate regarding WCVC.

Enjoy your family time with your grandchildren. They grow up fast.

Yesterday afternoon I heard a weak signal, in stereo, playing country music on 102.1. Stayed on for a few minutes & then off, I could then hear a distant sounding sports talk station on the frequency. If it was the WQLC facility, it was at greatly reduced power.

It depends on how many signals put a service contour over the area. Newman actually only owns WNFB and WDSR. The spouse owns WJTK and the FCC considers them different entities. It's very likely that Newman could acquire WQLC and promise to spin off the WGRO license to someone else, possibly a church or other non-profit organization. The Perry station presents no ownership problems at all.

Of course, that supposes that Newman is interested in owning WQLC and that he has deep enough pockets to make the deal happen. WQLC has been foundering for years, but Newman hasn't bought it. Maybe he doesn't think it's an especially good idea. Newman seems to be growing his company by diversifying into other small markets. He just put a station on the air in Jamestown, New York, for example. He may feel that his resources are better spent in owning stations in different markets.

I hear when this trio went silent and the Am that flipped to country .. I heard it billed some ungodly amount of $$ in the first wweek it was on the air.

Clearly, this "retooling" is an excuse and smokescreen.

Are you referring to Newman's WDSR-AM which had been oldies prior to WQLC and WGRO going silent?

yeah, I just couldnt remember the call letters.. and didn't feel like looking it up LOL.

yes, I was told WDSR did real well in the $$ department when they went country.

Not surprising. Newman's a pretty sharp local radio guy. He flipped the format very quickly because WQLC left a lot of money on the table when it went dark. My guess is that WDSR-AM and the 97.1 FM translator will do as well as, or better than, WQLC did under it's previous management.

Well it ought to do even better once the upgrade to 95.5 FM happens. However, if Newman gets the itch and buys 102.1 then he could likely bill bigger...but anyways Newman made the right call. The music on 97.1 with the prior oldies format and what is on 106.5 WCJX now was almost crossing each other so people in Lake City still have an oldies/classic hits station to listen to without much difference.

102.1 is on right now, playing music & an announcement by Dockins broadcasting thanking the listeners for making Power Country part of the community. This whole thing is kinda strange....

Dockins Communications would be Ken Dockins, owner of WFDZ in Perry. I suppose they are LMAing the stations from Bolton, presumably with IRS approval.

I'd agree.. i guess he wants to control all the signals in the area

I believe I heard that he really wants to get out of the radio biz in rural Florida (an unsubstantiated rumor, I might add), but when an opportunity arises, somethimes one has to be willing to step through the doorway if a door is opened.

Please correct if I'm wrong, but isn't this the same operator referred to in the post "WPRY Off-The-Air"? He's allegedly operating a translator while the AM being translated is off, and now he's in control of someone else's license. Just what these people need--a flagrant rules violator to fix their problems. Wish I could hear that signal.

Their TV station newscasts look decent, seems like thats where all the money went, LOL. THey have a 15KW LP-DTV licensed to Perry.. the news is done in Farmington, MO by Fred Docknis.. and the weather is done there as well. The only local Tv staff in Perry is the sports guy, who I think is/was the Operations manager there.
