Maybe it's you who knows nothing about the biz. GTGO states True Oldies has a 5000 playlist, prove him wrong. He states that they are the fastest growing station in the ATL, prove him wrong. To quote GTGO: Go back and read the current book and many older posts here! (emphasis mine) Did you? NO!

It's about time those on this board give this man the respect he deserves.

A 5000 Song Playlist? That doesnt mean the station is successfull..

I will check on how big that playlist is!

Others have posted numbers that their audience actually went DOWN!

Owww I bit my tongue!!!

Define playlist? I say more like a library.

Someone else in this thread alone said:

Its great to see your continued posts proving to the world that you cannot read nor digest ratings - as actual numbers have been posted in other threads you started showing that WYAY has LOST audience since they flipped from Country.

Someone else posted, and I cant find the thread, about specific audience numbers.. and show they went from listeners in the high 200,000's to somewhere in the low 200,000's....

HOW IS THAT HAVING SUCCESS AND GAINING?

It's actually the same poster. One who knows a lot more about the industry than pretty much anyone here except perhaps Mr. Eduardo... from his post:

Actually I have read it - clearly you have not.

A year ago WYAY had 288,500 12+ listeners. In the Summer 2008 book they had 268,400. By the last month of the Summer Book, September, they had fallen to 204,600 listeners

I'd like to see how GoodTImesGreatOldies can explain going from 288,500 to 204,600 listeners is gaining and successfull!

106.7 lost more listeners then most mid sized towns have!

I'm not from Atlanta as I live in Florida. However, I am curious as to when WYAY changed format from country to oldies? Seems to me that 97.1 also flipped from country to oldies some time ago. Was the former country WYAY losing ad revenue, and that was the reason for the big switch? Or is country not as popular in Atlanta as it was at one time?

.
Have radio and TV stations ever actually exchanged CASH for advertising? ???

Every radio station I've ever worked at (granted, that's only 6 stations), has TRADED spots for spots, based on full market rates.

For those from out of town...a brief summary.

WFOX (now WSRV) was never country. It went from top 40 to AC in the mid-80's, oldies "Fox 97" in 1989, Urban "97-1 Jamz" in 2003, and classic hits "The River in 2006. Cox acquired the station in 2000 as part of a complicated trade involving an FCC ordered divesture as part of the AMFM/Clear Channel merger (WFOX was an AMFM station at the time. Cox gave CC KFI and KOST in Los Angeles in exchange for WFOX and at least a dozen other stations).

WYAY flipped to True Oldies in February immediately following the NASCAR race at Atlanta Motor Speedway. WYAY still has NASCAR after the flip. They were country since 1984 (Y106 until 2000, then Eagle after then). The reason for the flip was corporate cost cutting from Citadel corporate. A jazz station in Washington, DC Citadel owned (and like WYAY got through the ABC acquisition) flipped to True Oldies just days before WYAY. Sister WKHX "Kicks 101.5" is a country powerhouse in Atlanta, so much that CC flipped 94.9 to country to compete with no avail.

One of the victims of the WYAY flip was the morning show host, Warren "Rhubarb" Jones, who had been the morning DJ since the launch of WYAY in 1984. He is now a communications instructor at Kennesaw State University (just outside of Atlanta).

We had a station in between WFOX and WYAY...CC's WLCL "Cool 105.7", which launched one week after the WFOX flip to "Jamz". Randy and Spiff, the morning show that joined Fox 97 at launch, went to Cool. In fact, Cool was a complete carbon copy of the mid 90's Fox 97, complete with the same jingles and two other DJ's. Big John Wetherbee, who was doing weather at WGCL-TV CBS 46 while at Fox and later Peach and Cool as PD (He is now Operations manager at CC Savannah and doing weather at WTOC-TV). JJ Jackson was at 105.7 prior to the station flipping to oldies under the "Mix" classic hits format (before the format became cool) At last check JJ was in Louisville at a CC adult hits station. Cool 105.7 lasted two years before Espanol took over.

Randy and Spiff were transfered to sister AC 94.9 (the world famous "Peach", which became "Lite FM" two years earlier). They lasted there until 94.9 went country. They were transfered to news/talk WGST (who had fired all local talent beforehand a month prior). Spiff was let go completly a few months later, while Randy is still at WGST. Spiff is now on afternoons on True Oldies.

Actually wYAY flipped on March 9,2008 at 7pm. Rhubarb Jones who was the morning show host since january of 1985 was let go. WYAY now features Don Imus in the morning and the Oldies Channel all day, except for 3-8 when Spiff, formerly of Randy and Spiff and Frddy Brooks are on.Dallasa Mc Cade and Greg Tallmadge the only on air survivors at WYAY moved over to Kicks to do the morning show with Cadlliac Jack. If WYAY didn't renew the Nascar contract who will carry Nascar next year? I'am woundering if it was another part of the cost cutting moves by citiadel.

I am not a fan of Nascar whatsoever. It is pure torture to listen to on radio. It belongs on a Country station. I hate when they mess up the oldies on Sunday.

if it does go to a country station,Kicks would be the only option since the bull still has a year left on the Braves contract.

But couldn't CC move the Braves to 96.1 to make room for Nascar on 94.9? Not saying they should, but that they could.

RhubarbFan said:
Yeah they could, but CC spent alot of money to get the Braves. So it's anybody's guess where Nascar will go.

But I don't think it matters to anyone which CC 100k signal the Braves are on...96.1 or 94.9.

Or are you saying it's a matter of money and not signals? Then it just comes down to ROI (whether CC thinks it's worth it) and then cash flow (whether CC has enough cash or credit lying around to make it happen). If CC can make enough money without strangling their cash flow, CC could and probably would do it.

Of course, we still don't know for certain the future of 94.9 and Nascar might not fit into their plans.
