TV coverage of the shooting of President Trump, 7/13/2024

KDKA coverage is excellent. It should win awards.

By the same token, if the bullet grazed his ear, then where did it end up? There were people seated behind him. Did any of them get hit?y that video.

I have now answered my own question: One of the people seated in the bleachers behind the podium says that the person killed at the rally was sitting in those bleachers.

Joseph said he was sitting in a set of bleachers at the far left of the podium when he heard "several gunshots" ring out. He said he saw a man a couple of yards away fall to the bottom of the bleachers after having been shot in the head. (from NBC News)

Eyewitnesses say the shooter was behind the bleachers and podium. Everyone is looking towards the left side of the bleachers as you face the podium.

CBS has gone back to regular programming. Tracker is on right now.
ABC/NBC still rolling coverage.

How can this thread not be political.? The incident happened at a political rally.
Because the facts of the case have not been released, including the name and background of the man who fired the shots. Don't expect that until he has been thoroughly investigated and his family (if any) has been notified. Only then will his name and details be released.
The media coverage will run the gamut from fact based reporting to the usual conspiracy nonsense. No one should be surprised by violence in the current climate...
The BS has already started, but not by any legitimate news organization. Real news operations should reject it as soon as they hear of it. So far, the broadcast networks have been professional. The cable noise channels and other ultra-slanted noise media are best ignored.

Locally (in Philly) only broadcast network coverage still airing is NBC. Not sure if CBS and ABC are still airing national coverage and our affiliates switched away to local programming at 11 PM ET.

I reiterate that the best coverage of the assassination attempt has been from KDKA AM 1020, in Pittsburgh. They went back to Hollywood 360 about 45 minutes ago but the coverage was full of eyewitness accounts - and calls for reliability. We may never know some of the details of the assassination as they will be well-hidden, but I applaud KDKA for being there LOCALLY on a Saturday afternoon/evening.

I was just watching the press conference from Butler County law enforcement, along with the FBI, and they're not ready to announce any specifics regarding the identity of the shooter or victims. There was no rep from the Secret Service, and they all defer to them. The only thing they were willing to confirm was it was an assassination attempt.

Interesting, since sources tell the New York Post it was a 20-year-old man from a nearby suburb. We'll see if that gets confirmed by the FBI or not - probably tomorrow or Monday. It is a tabloid, so I take it with a grain of salt

it doesn't matter which party the person being shot at is affiliated with, all i know is a president or his political rival being shot at while attending a political rally is not a good sign for our nation, but at the same time, props to all the TV network for their coverage tonight of this act of political violence/domestic terrorism, i just hope we can make it through the rest of this election cycle without any more political violence and the election ends peacefully and we don't have another insurrection/coup attempt.

and NBC wrapped up coverage on the main network at about 12:03 AM CDT, also NBC Sports' coverage of tonight's night race (of a Saturday Night/Sunday Afternoon doubleheader race weekend) from Iowa Speedway in the IndyCar Series was moved to CNBC & Peacock so NBC can stay with the assassination attempt of Donald Trump coverage all night. it sucks that i recorded the breaking news coverage on the DVR instead of the race cause of the last minute nature that breaking news events can cause.

NBC aired coverage until 1:03am.

NBC News started with Jose Diaz-Balart, the usual Saturday anchor who was preparing for his 6:30 p.m. ET show, at 6:20 p.m. ET. (Viewers in Detroit didn't see that coverage until 6:45 p.m. ET, as WDIV stuck with local news after a 15-minute golf overrun; WDIV ran the clip of the incident twice but was woefully short on details and merrily carried on with local weather, sports and commercials.)

Diaz-Balart yielded to Lester Holt within an hour or so. Hallie Jackson took over at 11 p.m. ET, the first half-hour of coverage only seen in the west as local east/midwest stations went to local news, and went to 1:03 a.m.

NBC's Dasha Burns had several coherent witnesses, but identified them only by first name. Six or seven of them. I've been a reporter forever (almost as long as David E's been in radio) and you get the first and last name, their age and hometown. Reuven Frank, twice NBC News president, would have been appalled. (In 1963, a witness to the JFK shooting was asked their home address on WBAP-TV, and gave it!) Otherwise NBC's coverage was stellar.

Program changes Sunday include a 90-minute CBS special report in place of Sunday Morning and an expanded Sunday Today on NBC. There will probably be special reports all day across all four big networks, and the cable newsers will smother the story.

This incident will be Ratings Gold. They will be able to milk it right up to election day. Coverage will include all kinds of Spin and predictions. All the incident really amounts to is dumping petrol on an already raging dumpster fire.

"IF IT BLEEDS IT LEADS"was the old TV news cliche. This is that on steroids. The shooter has been identified. A country that runs on hateful rhetoric and unlimited access to guns is a short route to chaos. It's no wonder that the guy who spews the most invective was the victim this time...

I was watching NBC coverage that followed the 10pm local news. To be honest, I left out of boredom about 30-40 minutes in. Every question the reporters asked could not be clearly heard and the answer was always that the information was not available and the investigation was ongoing. If the questions could be heard and/or the person would refer to the question, I may have been riveted.

This isn't a reality show where everyone is mic'd and under the control of the show producers. The police and FBI controlled that PC, and several times were asked by reporters to speak into the mic. They really had no answers because, as they explained, the secret service takes the lead on this, and they weren't at the PC. Ultimately the FBI will investigate the secret service, but it will be a while until we get answers. The house is going to hold hearings on the 22nd, and I bet even they will be frustrated by the answers they get.

The best interview I saw was from the BBC, intervieing a guy who lived just past the secured perimiter and saw the shooter on a rooftop, and apparently tried to get security's attention.

I agree! BBC did a terrific job. CBS was decent, I thought. I was underwhelmed by ABC. NBC kept interviewing rally attendees with no real "scoops" during the times I tuned in.

FOX proper (not to be confused with Fox News Channel) was useless in some large & major markets. Their O&O here in the Detroit market ran the Twins - Giants baseball game uninterrupted - aside from scheduled commercial breaks - with zero mention of the assassination attempt. There were no news vignettes, no crawls, nothing! That baseball telecast began at 7PM ET. I was completely stunned by the lack of any news coverage.

I understand FOX O&O stations in some other markets, including Minneapolis and San Francisco, either went split screen or went exclusively with news coverage of the shooting (using a Fox News Channel feed). Atlanta, like Detroit, went with baseball nonstop from what I understand.
