TV Show Cancellation Thread (including ending ones)

Update on Nexflix cancelling shows on their on demand service

When you picture the offices at Netflix, do you just imagine executives throwing handfuls of cash at TV producers? It doesn’t seem that far off. This year, the streaming service behemoth is projected to cough up $6 billion on content, ranking only behind ESPN in spending.

For years, Netflix was seen as the dream spot for TV shows: a seemingly unlimited budget, and without the pressure of ratings because executives don’t reveal them. So even though you may have never heard of shows such as “Flaked” or “Haters Back Off,” it wasn’t too surprising that they were renewed. However, that era of Netflix may be coming to an end.

The company confirmed Saturday that “Girlboss” has been canceled after one season. The dramedy — an adaptation of e-retailer entrepreneur Sophia Amoruso’s book — didn’t get great reviews, but it certainly had loyal fans. It appears that’s no longer enough to ensure a second season. “Girlboss” is the third Netflix show in a month to get cut, following Baz Luhrmann’s musical drama “The Get Down” (one season) and Lana and Lilly Wachowski’s sci-fi series “Sense8” (two seasons).

As you may know, three is a trend: Over the weekend, multiple outlets pointed to the “Girlboss” news as a real signal that Netflix is serious about trimming its original offerings. Last month, Netflix chief executive Reed Hastings told CNBC that “our hit ratio is way too high right now” and acknowledged the company had very few cancellations.

“I’m always pushing the content team, we have to take more risks, you have to try more crazy things,” he said. “Because we should have a higher cancel rate overall.”

Many interpreted this as Hastings saying Netflix would crack down on shows that didn’t make a huge splash — as opposed to series such as the polarizing “13 Reasons Why,” a drama about teen suicide that proved extremely controversial but earned worldwide headlines and tons of social-media buzz. It was recently renewed for a second season.

Antennas went up after fall’s cancellation of “Bloodline.” Granted, it got three seasons, but critics were still shocked to see Netflix ax a show that not only had a star-studded cast (Kyle Chandler, Ben Mendelsohn) but also lots of awards attention. At the time, Vulture’s Joe Adalian noted that Netflix might have “entered a new phase in its history” in which it wouldn’t just toss money at high-profile producers (and “Bloodline” was getting expensive).

Comedy Central's 11:30 PM ET time slot has killed another one after Colbert left for CBS, this time @Midnight is canceled after 4 seasons, it will end after it's 600 episode on August 4 at 12:00 AM ET (the show had been airing at 11:30 PM ET every night since the cancellation of "The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore", but recently, after the debut of "The President Show" with comedian Anthony Atamanuik playing President Trump on as a weekly show on Thursday nights, @Midnight moved back to it's normal 12 AM ET for only the Thursday episodes, while the Monday Night-Wednesday night shows stayed at 11:30 ET).

the decision was made by the show's host Chris Hardwick (who has been busy with his "Nerdist" empire, being the Host of "The Wall", and a upcoming project for NBC called "The Awesome Show" as well as his "Talking" franchise on AMC which includes "Talking Dead", which airs after "The Walking Dead" where they talk about the new episode that aired before it.) and Comedy Central programming staff. the show had suffered a ratings decrease since moving to the slot after "The Daily Show"

@Midnight's replacement will be Jordan Klepper's new still to be name show that will air after The Daily Show, which Kleeper will be leaving the Daily Show soon (Kleeper's replacement is going to be Michael Kosta, who has been on shows that have been canceled for poor raings, so now he may have finally found something that is successful for him. )

i'm gonna miss this show after it ends, but at least we know Chris Hardwick can move on to his role as the next Ryan Seacrest.

and if Jordan Kleeper's new show fails at that time slot, then Comedy Central should just replace it with a marathon of South Park.

Chris Hardwick? No thanks! You can keep him! He's also forced down our throats in any area who has Comcast (such as New Britain, Middletown and Hartford, CT).

Amen, brother! (or sister), I don't get the attraction to that guy. Seacrest, and his supposed progenitor, Dick Clark, were notable for being easy-going - there to do the job as announcer or host - not as the star attraction. They could be called "bland," but in their role, it's not a bad thing. Hardwick reminds me of the loud-mouth in high-school who thought he was funny in class, but was really just annoying - not an actual "class clown," just a poseur.

he's Seascrest if Seacrest was a die-hard nerd. basically, he's a icon of nerd culture, dating back to the days when he was working on G4TV's Attack of The Show (which ended in 2013 to prepare G4TV to be switched to the now failed Esquire Network, only for NBCUniversal to decide to kill Style instead of G4 to make room for that channel) as their gadget expert and sometimes substitute host when one of the regular host of the show is sick, or on vacation or on assignment.

I was a fan of The Walking Dead, so I occasionally watched The Talking Dead fan and interview show afterward, which Hardwick hosted. I stopped watching after awhile, because he was just too annoying. And I'd always have to mute the sound on his high-volume shouting trailers for Midnight that would run during The Daily Show.

I remember Chris Hardwick hosting Singled Out really liked that show wish MTV would bring it back. I also remember Chris hosting the short live Shipmates which was a dating show in fall of 2001 don't think it made it to a second season but I could be wrong on that.

Shipmates aired late night where I lived, and yes it did go into season 2 (and was promptly cancelled in the spring of 2003).

the following shows has just been canceled in the last few weeks that seem to went unnoticed by this thread, as confirmed by the site TVSeriesFinale.com:

Nickelodeon has announced that the current 4th season of their hit live action superhero family sitcom "The Thundermans" will be the show's last, the season began in 2016 but production was recently extended to give the show 6 more episode giving the show a total of 103 episodes overall in the shows run, which pretty much was Nick's way of saying, time to wrap it up. the stars of the show Kira Kosarin, Diego Velazquez, Addison Riecke, and Jack Griffo confirmed it's cancellation on their respected social media accounts. the show debuted on the network in 2013, and will air it's last episode in 2018.

The WWE has canceled "Talking Smack" as a weekly post-show for SmackDown Live on WWE Network after 1 year, the reason for the cancellation, a combo of poor ratings (due to moving from airing right after SmackDown Live aired on USA to after the Raw brand cruiserweights only sub-brand "205 Live".), WWE owner Vince McMahon hating the semi-off scripted nature of the promos cut on this show, and WWE recent budget cuts due to lower then normal earnings (they also recently stopped with using pyrotechnics (a longtime staple used in TV shows) on WWE TV all together as it cost too much money to use), the show will be used as a post-PPV show after SmackDown brand PPVs. this decision caught the show's co-host Renee Young and former WWE Champion (and current on-screen SmackDown GM) Daniel Bryan off guard as they didn't get info about the show's cancellation until the news hit the wrestling news websites.

ABC canceled Battlebots after 2 seasons, they confirmed it earlier this month, the show was pretty much a Summer Time TV lineup filler while the regular ABC shows that air during the regular TV season was on Summer break, how ever, the reruns of the first two season will air on Science channel soon.

E! has canceled So Cosmo, a reality show that follows the staff at Cosmopolitan magazine, after 1 whole season, poor ratings would be the show's downfall.

and CW has confirmed that the 5th season of "The Originals", the spin off of "The Vampires Diaries" will be the show's final season.
