Now Fox explains why they cancelled American Idol

Beverly Hills, Calif. — Dana Walden, Fox Television Group Chairman and CEO, stood by the network’s decision to cancel American Idol, which is returning on ABC. She said ratings were down substantially, and the show had gotten “extremely expensive,” in large part because of big-name judges.

“It was a really tough decision to make,” she said, adding that “the economics were terrible for us at that moment.”

Walden said there were talks with producer Fremantle to cut costs and to shake up the format of the show. “They were very worried about doing anything that would disrupt the chemistry of the panel,” she said. “They did not want to experiment with the format.”



She mentioned a “dilemma” of moving forward with Idol at “that extraordinary loss,” or saying goodbye to Idol.

The last episode of Fox's American Idol aired in spring 2016.

Fox announced a new singing competition series, The Four, at its TCA session in Los Angeles.

Walden said Fox was keen to get American Idol back, but not so soon after it was cancelled. “We felt like that was very fraudulent to our viewers,” she said.

“Gypsy” will not be returning for a second season at Netflix, Variety has confirmed.

The series followed Jean Holloway (Naomi Watts), a Manhattan therapist with a seemingly picturesque life who begins to develop intimate and illicit relationships with the people in her patients’ lives. In addition to Watts, the series starred Billy Crudup, Sophie Cookson, Lucy Boynton, and Karl Glusman.

Lisa Rubin wrote the series, which was directed by “Fifty Shades Of Grey’s” Sam Taylor Johnson as well as Victoria Mahoney and Coky Giedroyc. It was produced for Netflix by Universal Television and executive produced by Rubin, Naomi Watts, Sean Jablonski, and Liza Chasin.

The series received mixed reviews upon its premiere in June, with Variety’s Maureen Ryan writing in her review, “[The] series — which derives its questionable and incongruous title from the Stevie Nicks song that plays during the opening credits — just plods along through the minutiae of Jean’s life and lies, going nowhere very slowly.”

This is the latest in a string of cancellations at Netflix. The streaming service has pulled the plug on “The Get Down,” “Girlboss,” and “Sense8” in the past few months. Other recent cancellations include “Marco Polo” and “Bloodline.” However, “Sense8” will air a two-hour finale special that is expected to air in 2018.

On Thursday, Netflix announced that they had renewed the freshman half-hour dramedy “GLOW” for a second season. Boasting “Orange Is the New Black” creator Jenji Kohan as an executive producer, the series tells the fictionalized story of a real-life all-female pro wrestling TV show from the 1980’s.

Mario Lopez is presently filming a holiday TV movie for Lifetime called "Christmas Hours" in New Britain and Bristol, CT. I'm sure the "Candy Crush" episodes were taped weeks ago.

New Britain Herald coverage clarifies that there is no confirmed deal for the movie yet. The production company -- small-time, Connecticut-based -- is targeting Lifetime, but it could wind up on Hallmark, direct to home video, or even an online release. Anything but theatrical. And local filming wrapped up early this week.

Update ESPN has cancelled a talk show over its content

ESPN launched “Barstool Van Talk” on ESPN2 in the hopes of harnessing the growing popularity of its backer, the raunchy Barstool Sports site, for its wee-hours schedule. But just days after starting the program, ESPN is pulling it off the air.

The program, said ESPN President John Skipper, in a statement, is canceled “effective immediately.”

“While we had approval on the content of the show, I erred in assuming we could distance our efforts from the Barstool site and its content,” said Skipper.

The program always seemed a strange fit for ESPN. The Disney-owned sports programmer unveiled a deal with Barstool Sports, the digital-media firm majority-owned by the Chernin Group, to create “Barstool Van Talk”earlier this month. The interview/comedy show was hosted by Barstool’s Dan “Big Cat” Katz and PFT Commenter and produced by Henry Lockwood — the trio who produce the comedic sports podcast “Pardon My Take” along with Embassy Row. The show often uses a mocking tone for much of mainstream sports media.

Barstool’s writers have reveled in being obnoxious — the tone is de rigueur at the company — and staffers have been called out for racist and sexist comments.

ESPN football host Samantha Ponder recently took to social media to call out Barstool writers for the way they described her on the site. She also expressed disappointment in ESPN for aligning with Barstool despite some of its content.

Wow a new ESPN scandal has come out today and that show is cancelled before it is aired. Dang ESPN runs from one scandal to the next out of all the sports/talk channels division.

We seen how a news/talker like Fox News Channel has been running from one scandal to the next in the past year and its negative effects. I say ESPN might face the same fallout as Fox News based on how many scandals this network is going through.

they canceled the show after 1 episode cause they regretted making a deal with a company that was outed as being a company that was well, not very PC/women friendly.

i'm sure the Barstool guys will find a way to get their show moved to FS1 or NBCSN or CBS Sports Network or even go one step further and make the show a YouTube Red/YouTube Original content or do it in-house on their own site. but if i'm 21st Century Fox (owners of FS1), NBC Universal (owners of NBCSN), or CBS Corporation (owners of CBS Sports Net), i would steer clear of this show. Google on the other hand, can deal with more outrage if they allow this to launch on YouTube, after all, they have been dealing with a big scandal with ads playing on content that wasn't corporate America friendly let alone family friendly.
