TVLAND and Commercials = Ridiculous

MarcB said:
Hi-jacking my own thread. Something that I just noticed not too long ago while flipping through channels is ads popping up at the bottom of the screen (or the side of the screen) during Springer and Maury on WCCT-TV 20 out of Hartford. I don't watch either show, but you got to wonder how long it will be before other stations/networks start doing it.

The History Channel used to superimpose advertisements for the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) during one of their programs.

The choice is either put up with the added commercials or pull the plug on cable, or get rid of the dish, and subscribe to Netflix and get OTA TV if you want to save money.
Netflix is the bomb when it comes to avoiding commercials. Even though it's not what it once was, PBS is also the bomb for commercial loads, compared to cable. That's about all I watch (limited OTA options except on a great reception day) unless ion has something interesting ("Psych" "Leverage" couple others) and I've nothing else to do right then.

When I would calculate how much time I spent watching ads or tv shows (the same of both over and over in their schedules), it would occur to me that my time was better spent not repeating the same days over and over, and I figured it also gave me more time to check out great internet sites like radiodiscussions.com, for example.

Why not? Darrin number 2 was gay.
So was Uncle Arthur.
Only in real life.

I find it annoying when I watch movies on local stations that sometimes they have a commercial break that is too short for what commercial breaks were intended for. At least the makers of Glade and Lysol are honest when the first one is said to be "a limited commercial break". I've quit doing what I do during breaks during the first one. But then with some movies they have to tell you the movie will return, because otherwise you might leave, I suppose, and then they have to do it again because the break was so extremely long.

With Disney movies of course you get a mini-informercial even after all that, for the latest Disney attraction. I won't complain because that means I don't have to pay for the Disney channel to see those Disney movies.

Long breaks with movies have been around perhaps since the start of television, especially so for movies on independent stations and on network affiliates during local time. For instance. WTOG in Tampa Bay would often have long breaks -- halfway through, they would show a slide promoting an upcoming movie (sometimes accompanied with a preview), followed by a reminder that the movie you're watching now will return "after these messages." WFTS also did something similar to this, but they rarely promo upcoming films in conjunction with the bumpers.

Then again, some of us wish we would pay extra for Disney -- after it became a basic channel, they started having breaks during movies and shows, but even today, the breaks featured only promos and featurettes on upcoming Disney films and attractions, as if The Disney Channel is one big infomercial for Disney.

Tvland like many other channels went south so I cut the cord. MeTV is a far much better network and few channels.

though my local affiliate is starting to slip more and more half-hour infomercials into the schedule. :(
I have begun to notice this on local as well. Last weekend there four shows in a row that were bumped. I believe it was late Sat. night/early Sun. morning.

They were listed as shows not paid programs. They even showed the same exact imformercial twice in that two hour period.

I like this network, if they keep this up I may just go back to watching DVD's. This goes for any channel, I don't get so bothered when it is listed as a paid program on the guide. I really get irked when they list The Honeymooners or another favorite and I get my snacks and stuff to watch and boom Tony whats his face get rich quick sceam comes on!

What is this saying, they are in financial difficulty or they are starting to take their viewers for granted?

WPIX in NYC inserts ads in the middle of tv shows. I have noticed it on Sunday nights in the middle of shows like Seinfeld and Friends. The ads take up the bottom 1/3 of the screen and last about 20 seconds.
