Two stations that I still miss today..................

Yes 690 came in pretty good up in Bakersfield. It was also like a local in Santa Barbara. The signal up in Santa Maria was decent enough to show up in the arbitrons in the early 80's. An area in the San Fernando valley close to the 710 towers did have 690 reception problems tho.

I can recall hearing KRLA 700+ miles away in Salt Lake City in the middle of the day in the late sixties and early seventies.

And it wasn't even a clear channel flamethrower a la KFI and (not sure) KNX.

I also have to agree about KRTH sounding much better in the mid-eighties after KLSX was launched.

Oldies 1260 AM.
When it morphed from Adult Standards to Oldies, I found myself listening to it all day. I never got tired of it.
To it's final moments when it briefly was ' The Shuffle '. Sad day for me. Somehow I tolerated their playlist more than others. I wish KRTH would have incorporated some of their music.
The other was Y107, the brief competitor to KROQ. I liked the jockless format and their ID spots sounded eerily similar to what JACK is now doing.
Boo hoo hoo. :(

I agree about the Oldies on 1260. I also liked their previous version of Adult Standards as KSURF. They had a broader range of titles and artists, more than after the switch back from Oldies prior to country. Actually I think KRTH has deepened their playlist lately but it isn't likely that they will ever go back as far as 1260 did. As a relacement I suggest, if you can get onto their website try WDJO at: http://www.oldies1160.com/ or RichBroRadio at: http://www.richbroradio.com/main.html. One of my favorite features from AM1260 was John Regan's Doo Wop Shop, which aired on Saturdays and repeated Sundays.

Thanx 4 the links. Shadoe Stevens also had a countdown show on the early phase of 1260 Oldies also, right?
Or am I confusing that with another station?

I don't recall any type of show with Shadoe Stevens. At the onset they did take the Scott Shannon's "True Oldies Channel" from ABC Radio Networks. I did not hear at first because they launched on 540 then added 1260 with Shannon only on in the evenings and local DJs during the day. The Shannon part was supposed to be "custom" voiced for LA but it sounded pretty bad so they went local in the evenings too. I believe 540 at first was all "True Oldies" from the satellite. Also during the original Adult Standards and Oldies they carried Old Time radio programming in the late evenings and Stan Freberg's "When Radio Was".

That's right. It was Scott Shannon. My bad. Thanks.

The station that I miss the most is KMET. Jeff Gonzer, Ace Young, Pat (Paraquat) Kelly, Mary Turner, Cynthia Fox, and Jim Ladd. That was a very great time in my life, and I had a blast listening to that station.

I also miss the El Supremeo...the late great B. Mitchell Reid.

I never cared for Michael Benner's Sunday morning talk show.

Does anyone remember the old KIQQ or EZ listening station KJOI??? I always thought they were very cool FM radio stations back in the day. (I know, I'm showing my age! ;)

K-I-Q-Q........Liked their top of the hour station ID.....Music was really good too....Remember Francesca Capucci??

yes, I do! Jay Coffey, Bruce Chandler, etc., pretty good FM radio.

I miss KUTE 102 with Lucky Pierre...The Mighty 'MET...KGBS (Bill Ballance)...KIQQ ...KKDJ with Russ O'Hara...and 1580 KDAY circa 1970s with Warren Duffy, Bill Martinez, Wolfman Jack nights, Lew Irwin doing news and GM Bob Wilson (yes, the original R&R founder and publisher).

Well I miss Mega 100 (KCMG). Not really for the music, but for the staff. From the GM to the lowest street teamer, we all had fun together, and it actually felt like a family. I cant say that about any other place I've ever worked at. I've been told thats how most stations were before consolidation began. Unfortuneatly, I began working in radio when all the takeover madness began.

So you know my friend Mucho??

Mucho was never on Mega 100. I believe he did a weekend shift after the signal swap to Mega 92.3 Jamz. I jumped ship when the signal switched.

I guess I am thinking of KIBB (called "Mega 100.3) or was it B100.3? When did the calls change to KCMG? I thought Mucho was there when that happened.
from this link-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KKBT#As_KIBB

'In 1996, the station changed calls to KIBB ("B 100.3") and flipped to a Rhythmic Hot Adult Contemporary format with a Dance leaning direction. The move was to pattern themselves after WKTU/New York City and to go after listeners who have become disenfranchaised with the increasing Hip-Hop content at KPWR. In 1997, Chancellor would buy KIBB, added currents to its playlist and shifted directions to Rhythmic Contemporary Hits.

Despite the effort and a promotional campaign (one memorable ad featured a large billboard of a Latina woman dancing placed near a building on Broadway in Downtown Los Angeles), KIBB couldn't make a dent in the ratings. After two years and minor tweaks in its playlist and direction, KIBB fate was sealed when Chancellor decided to drop the format in November 1997 for yet another short-lived fad: Rhythmic Oldies as "Mega 100.3" (The Rhythmic AC format would return ten years later in 2007 at KMVN). Chancellor merged with Capstar in 1999, forming AMFM Inc.'

--------------------------------------
And Mucho Morales was there at KIBB in 1997 as I have an aircheck of him (and myself phoning in an introduction to a song) ;)

Send me a link, I'd sure like to hear that aircheck of Mucho on B-100. I really think you have your jocks mixed up, but, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. By the way, I was the only one from the programming staff at B100 that didnt get fired when B100 changed to Mega 100 (hope no one guesses my secret identity!).

I'd send you the aircheck if I could ever find it (in my garage!!). Jocks mixed up? Nope. On two occasions Mucho worked with me and for 14 months (2000-2001) Mucho worked for me! He told me many great stories about Robt W, Ryan Seacrest, and other ppl he worked with and knew. So I am very sure of my rememberance. I also have a nice aircheck of Mucho when he was on "Lite 92.7" which he forever banished me from playing it in the office while he was there. Trivia... On Mucho's very first shift @ 92.7 (around September 1998 IIRC) we had a heat wave and you know how hot it can get in Thousand Oaks, so he's on the air and after about an hour .... dead air .... for two or three hours. Thanks to the 100+ degree weather, there was a power failure. Some people have the luck. Poor Mucho had to be there with no A/C.

I just talked to Boomer and he says Mucho was never there. And I just emailed Tony Coles, he was the only PD for B-100 to ask and make sure. I really dont remember him being there at all. Here is the line up I remember:

5 - 10a (?), Wankus, and Patty Lotz
10 - 3pm Leigh Anne Adams
3 - 7pm Joe "The Boomer" Servantez
7 - 12am Jammin Jeff Scott
12 - 5am Tommy Banda

?- I cant remember his name (he was at Star prior to B100, then after B100, he was at KIIS)

on the weekend, I can only remember Benny Martinez, "LA's Original Homeboy!"

Well maybe I'm getting mixed up with a diff station ???

I guess I'll have to dig up that aircheck to see what station it was.

EDIT: What station was KIBB what format did they have in 1997? According to Don Barrett's book and website, Mucho DID work for KIBB.

Yeah I saw that on LARADIO too...but for the life of me, I dont recall him there. The station was always a Rythmic CHR.

The Spring Duncan's American Radio edition shows it as Black AC with a 1.6 share. They were 100.3 and owned by Chancellor.

Hey SuperRadioFan...so I got a response from the former PD of B-100, and he confirmed what I had thought. Mucho was never part of the staff, but he did have some tryouts on the air, so what you might have is an aircheck of that. The guy i couldnt remember on the morning show was Gary Spears. And the station was a Rythmic AC. I have a tape that we used for promotional events, basically music with rejoiners. I'll try to make and MP3 of it and post it somewhere.
