Upstate: 94.5 format change 12-3-12

Eric, I've checked it out around the top of the hour a few times and have heard nothing. It seems like, at the very least, they'd redirect their listeners to the online stream where the station is supposed to continue (we know how that goes, we'll see how long that lasts). I was thinking perhaps they'd use the weekend to redirect the listeners....I wonder if any air staff will be kept for the online broadcast?

doesn't bob jones u have a broadcasting curriculum? maybe the stream is maintained for those course studies to train broadcasters their way

I didn't catch the guy's name, but I (finally) heard a hint of a "goodbye" as I listening to the 5:00 news yesterday, Friday afternoon. As he wrapped up reading the Upstate headlines at around 5:07, he said something like, "that's your news headlines for the last time on WMUU. I'm __________, have a great weekend." Again, I cannot directly quote what he said, but that's the jist of it. For any listener unaware of what's going to happen Monday, that probably didn't mean much.

I caught a brief mention that they are going to be changing on Monday to a "high quality" talk format but would still be online at wmuu.com.
I was expecting a sign off/farewell a bit more eventful.

My understanding is that Salem will operate the stream, not BJU. BJU seems to be done with radio. I'm not sure, but I believe BJU has a campus radio station that their broadcast students use.

Again....third rate "high quality" talkers on a first rate signal. Sad. They have a rather plain website up at http://www.conservativetalk945.com

I did hear an announcement today. It said "soon". The LED sign out front says tomorrow.

I've got a PC recording them. Just curious IF they say goodbye. Will post the audio if anything is said. I'll also keep recording thru to Gallagher just to hear what he says.

Around 7:35 this morning, Bill Bennett gave a shout out to the new Upstate listeners. He stated it was on a brand new station - I was yelling at my radio saying, "No Bill, this station has been on the air several decades. It was not built from the ground up over the past few months." Honestly, he really made it sound like a brand new facility.

No goodbye or anything.....

They let "Away in a Manger" play out, there is a brief audio blurb followed by about 40 second of dead air. Then you can hear someone pot up a feed in the middle of a Fox's pizza spot. I'll edit the audio down and post later. I can also see where they square waved the audio about 20 minutes into the new format.

Rumor has it that the program audio is produced in Dallas and sent here as a complete feed. That would explain a lot of the digital twang I'm hearing.

I notice the website is still up, promoting "94.5" and all of the old WMUU shows.

No goodbye on their Facebook page, either. BJU doesn't seem very concerned about their listeners. Such a sad way for decades of history to end.

94.5 is obsessing over Mike Gallagher, and the people are going crazy (as I've said, I have never understood the draw). They keep calling Gallagher "Greenville's own" and "hometown boy." I'm confused...I believe he's from somewhere up north and just worked here for a while, as he did in other markets such as Albany and even NYC! How do you become a "hometown boy" or "market's own" of a place you worked in for a while years and years ago? I guess I'm not getting it. A minor rant...

However, I don't think Salem has ever carried Mr. Boortz on any of its stations--likely, I assume, because it considers him too libertarian.

Salem's 1070 KNTH in Houston carried Boortz for a year in 2010-2011.

I doubt that is the last news headlines on wmuu. more likely the last news headlines from him. ;)

And it's being reported that South Carolina native Jane Robelot will be 94.5's new news anchor; you might remember her from CBS' morning show.

106.3 will win, hands down. Are any of these people, save for Gallagher (who may have a few successful affiliates, like he did in WORD), even popular? What a dud of an idea for a format.
Assuming you are right that WORD wins hands down, I can't help but think this is not going down well at 25 Garlington Road. Much better to be an exclusive format than number 1 in a 2 horse race. This will absolutely have an effect on local advertising, the station's bread and butter.

It'll be interesting to see how this shakes down. As well as WORD does, I think their local on-air talent leaves much to be desired. Especially Bob McClain, the former PD who was sadly mistaken to think he could really fill the shoes of Ralph Bristol (as much as I may have disagreed with him on a political level, he was still a much better talk host).

I don't listen to talk radio much at all, but would love to see WORD get some competition even if it is likely a suicide mission.

Off topic, it's kind of sad how Robelot's career took such a dive. While she was on CBS This Morning, I spend the day with her on the set and going about her normal routine (I was a journalist at the time). She was a lot of fun to be around and put her all into her work. The show didn't do well in the ratings, but I felt for sure she'd land on her feet at least as a network correspondent.

From a national network TV show to a "news anchor" (we all know how limited that really is on radio) on 94.5. Ouch.

I don't know her so I don't know if it's sad or not. Maybe she just decided she'd rather stay in Greenville than chase TV jobs all over the country that aren't what they once were. I know a little about that because I left radio because radio careers are less desirable than they were. Approaching retirement age has its advantages over raising kids. Income needs are less so we have more options. Robelot is 52. My guess is that the WMUU reporter job is little more than a hobby she can pursue from home.

According to the Jane Robelot Wikipedia entry, she is currently a contributing reporter for WYFF-TV in Greenville, SC. and "Robelot and her husband Mario DeCarvalho, created Carolina Zoom Productions, a High Definition video company"

And Robelot's bio is up (still) at WYFF's website. I don't watch WYFF News frequently enough to ever see her...has anyone here seen her there lately?

Don't watch regularly. Remember when they announced that they were bringing her back to her "hometown" news. But I haven't seen her in a long time.

Actually, Bob is still the PD. I honestly don't think he is a good talk show host at all. He seems like a pretty decent person, but I don't think he is cut out for talk radio, much less in a drive time. Ralph Bristol did quite a good job - he's in Nashville now.
Russ and Lisa are worse. Russ Cassell comes across as argumentative, hateful, and condescending. I absolutely do not know how he stays on the air (and judging from some Facebook posts I've seen, this isn't just my opinion). I quite honestly do not know how someone could listen to him for 4 hours. Jeez. I guess I can't really judge Lisa Rollins seeing what she has to put up with.
WVOC in Columbia and WSC/WTMA in Charleston are better talkers. WORD really leaves a lot to be desired.

Switching to 94.5, and sort of answering my own question, apparently Mike Gallagher's late wife is from Greenville so that is how he has all of these "connections." However, I couldn't stomach more than a few minutes of his show that I sampled yesterday. We get it. We know you're glad to be in Greenville and we know how big and awesome this station is and that they're centering it around you. It sounded to me like WMUU is using him and his "connections" to sign advertisers. As I've said, though, I don't find his show very interesting and have found it to be overhyped. I'm not really in to news/talk or politics in general, but I'd take Laura Ingraham on 106.3 any day.

Agree that they could hit 106.3 from an advertising standpoint - but I don't see many people listening to this station. They're just the same boring, vanilla Salem talkers that they put on their O&O's in so many other markets. And, those stations don't typically do that well from what I've seen. Now if they had a local presence in even AM drive, I could see them being a serious threat.

I have always liked the way Robelot came across. She was on WSPA, then went to CBS, then came to WYFF, I believe. If CBS's morning show wasn't always so troubled, I think she would have been very popular. It wasn't her, it was the show/network she was on. It's a shame she was never on a more popular program.

I believe she had been hosting a quarterly newsmagazine on WYFF called the 'Chronicles.' Seems like there was an edition a few months ago, and she has done cruises for WYFF in the past. I agree with Salty Dog that she is more than likely just doing it as a side thing to stay in the business. It'll be interesting to see if she stays with WYFF.

Before she went on to WSPA, Jane Robelot worked at WCCP-AM (now WAHT) in Clemson in the late 1970's and early 1980's. Now she is back on the radio in the same area she started out in.

What's on 660 and where is the online broadcast? I need to remember to try it out next time I have a computer with sound.

Also, is there any place where people are yelling about this? Was there any news coverage? I succeeded in getting Mark Washburn of The Charlotte Observer to mention it but he called the talk format "nonsecular". What does that even mean? I've seen no evidence here that their format is "nonsecular".
