ViacomCBS

CBS has named a new leader for CW management. This may be some of the results of the CBS/Viacom deal though

Mark Pedowitz on Friday was elevated to the role of chairman and chief executive officer of The CW Network, a joint venture between Warner Bros. Entertainment and ViacomCBS. Pedowitz will oversee all creative and business aspects of the network.

Since joining the network as president in 2011, Pedowitz has spearheaded several moves for The CW, including building and broadening the network’s audience, bolstering its primetime schedule with more original programming and setting a digital and social strategy.

In one of his most recent initiatives for The CW, Pedowitz has charted a new course for the network’s streaming strategy by securing full in-season digital rights to all new CW scripted series going forward, so viewers will now be able to catch up from the beginning of the season on CWTV.com or The CW app.

Another change at play due to the ViacomCBS deal

ViacomCBS has reshuffled its international networks division, splitting it into two brand groups and three regional hubs — all led by David Lynn, president and CEO of ViacomCBS Networks International (VCNI).

Kerry Taylor, executive vice president of MTV International, has been promoted to executive vice president of VCNI entertainment and youth brands, one of the brand groups, encompassing MTV, Comedy Central, Paramount Network and BET.

The other brand group will be led by Jules Borkent, now executive vice president of VCNI kids and family, overseeing Nickelodeon. Both Borkent and Taylor will report to Lynn, while Borkent will also report to Brian Robbins, ViacomCBS’s president of kids and family entertainment in the U.S.

Another change at play for CBS due to the Viacom deal is the rebranding of Paramount

Paramount Pictures has adjusted the moniker of its television production unit in part to avoid confusion in the marketplace with the Paramount Network cable channel.

As of Tuesday, Paramount Television has been renamed Paramount Television Studios. That lines up from a brand perspective with the existing CBS Television Studios operation, which is much larger than its counterpart. The name change comes on the heels of the closing of the merger of Viacom and CBS Corp. in December. The impetus for the change was the increase in the number of instances when viewers and industryites — and even ViacomCBS senior managers — mistook Paramount Television for the New York-based cable channel, or the other way around.

There had been speculation in the industry that some form of consolidation between Paramount TV and CBS Television Studios was inevitable. But it’s understood that Paramount Television Studios, headed by president Nicole Clemens, will remain a distinct entity within Paramount and not be absorbed as a label within CBS Television Studios, headed by president David Stapf. Clemens reports to Paramount Pictures chief Jim Gianopulos.

Cox has been named president of Entertainment & Youth Studios, in addition to his role as president of originals for Paramount Network.

Both executives have become key lieutenants to Chris McCarthy, president of the newly created division that houses MTV, VH1, Comedy Central, Paramount Network, TV Land, Pop TV, Smithsonian Channel and Logo. When CBS founder William S. Paley decided to build a new headquarters in the early 1960’s, some were surprised he chose a site on 6th Avenue, literally in the shadow of the RCA building at Rockefeller Center. Why build below the home of his lifelong archrival, David Sarnoff?

Sarnoff was an electronic and organizational genius, visualizing, then actually creating both network radio and television. Paley was the programming genius. Think of Sarnoff as hardware and Paley as software. At a time when television was just an idea, both had staked their companies and their personal reputations on an unproven technology and won. Both were at the height of their careers when Paley decided to escalate the competition to brick and mortar.

Small mistake in the linked article: "Wags immediately named the new building Black Rock, then shortened the NBC address to 30 Rock. ABC, down the street, naturally became Little Rock."

The ABC building, located at 1330 Avenue of the Americas, was nicknamed "Hard Rock" because the company owned rock & roll radio stations.

Management change at CBS due to the deal.

Doyle had been with Viacom since 1999 and had become a key lieutenant of Chris McCarthy, head of ViacomCBS’ Entertainment and Youth unit that houses MTV, VH1, Comedy Central, Paramount Network and other cable brands and production units. Doyle most recently served as g.m. of MTV, VH1, CMT and Logo.

ViacomCBS is in the midst of layoffs and restructuring following the merger of Viacom and CBS Corp. in December, but Doyle’s decision to move on was her own. McCarthy announced her departure Tuesday in a memo to staffers. Doyle will leave the company in the spring after a transition period.

“During her long and successful tenure, she will leave a legacy of building incredible teams, championing talent and creating some of the most memorable moments in pop-culture history,” McCarthy wrote. “She is a huge champion of our brands, our social impact work and each of you — she has helped shape the heart and soul of the company and for that we thank her dearly.”

Joe Ianniello will leave CBS in the Spring due to the CBS/Viacom deal

CBS CEO Joe Ianniello is expected to depart from ViacomCBS in the spring, according to a report from The Information, which cited two individuals familiar with the situation.

Ianniello was named CEO of CBS, under ViacomCBS CEO Bob Bakish, putting him in charge of all CBS-branded assets. Prior to CBS’ merger with Viacom, Ianniello had been serving as president and acting CEO following the resignation of Leslie Moonves in September of 2018

Now the Subscriber Count for All-Access and Showtime has been released.

CBS All Access and Showtime OTT, two key streaming services owned and operated by ViacomCBS, now have 10 million subscribers combined.

The new total, which is up from the 8 million combined CBS last year said the services had, comes from CBS Interactive CEO Marc DeBevoise. According to Variety, he said the services are in a “great position” to hit their goal of 25 million subscribers combined by 2022. He also said that the services are growing at a rate of 60% year over year.

The subscriber total update arrived amidst several programming announcements during company’s TCA press tour event. In addition to renewals for programs like “Star Trek: Picard,” and new season announcements for “The Twilight Zone,” CBS All Access also said that new versions of “Lassie,” “George of the Jungle” and “Mr. Magoo” will join its growing slate of children’s programming.

The longtime executive will depart her post at the end of the year.
Longtime CBS executive Deborah Barak will leave the network at the end of the year.

Barak, president of business operations for CBS Entertainment, CBS Television Studios and CBS News, will depart the company after more than 30 years in the latest change to the network's management structure.

Barak was a key member of former network boss Les Moonves' team and will be exiting as CBS once again merges with Viacom — though she has been planning her departure since before the two companies came back under one umbrella (as they were before splitting in 2006). Word of her departure also follows that of CBS TV Studios business affairs head Dan Kupetz, who took a job running that department at Disney's 20th Century Fox TV; Allison Brightman was elevated to replace him.

An Update in cuts due to the CBS/Viacom deal

ViacomCBS is letting go of staff amid a reorganization of its corporate diversity and inclusion department. Sources tell Variety that the cuts are concentrated in CBS’ legacy corporate-diversity department.

According to sources, five members of CBS’ nine-person corporate diversity team have been let go or have been told that their positions are likely to be eliminated. Among those affected are two high-ranking corporate diversity execs and three assistants, one of whom is a contract employee. All impacted employees have either left or are expected to leave the company by May 31. One source told Variety that talks with employees are ongoing and that final decisions regarding the makeup of the ViacomCBS corporate diversity and inclusion team have not been made.

A ViacomCBS spokesperson declined to comment.
