Don't many repeaters have automatic EAS equipment for the area they serve? Or is that not a requirement?

Also, considering that WGMU in general originates from Little Rock, I wonder how Equity handles EAS for their stations, since all of them are beamed to the transmitters via satellite from Little Rock.

Lessons we have learned so far from this alarm mode is what its stations can and can't do --and whether or not they have engineers on stand-by (apparently, in W61CE's case, they don't).

Come now! You have an alarm - what on earth do you need EAS for? Consider youself alerted. :D

I love it !! ::) I know Grandpa's Knob where the "World Famous W61CE" tranmitted is housed appeared to lose power along with WEXP, WRVT, and NOAA Weather Radio. Vermont ETV owns the tower, and I suspect they were bounced for a while. First time in almost 6 years that WEXP lost the juice, but when the lights came back on, there like a beacon shining brightly in the night are those famous words that only W61CE is capable of producing.. "Installation, Alarm Mode" that live on !

STAND BY FOR AN IMPORTANT ANNOUCEMENT.......

On this day, Monday April 23, 2007.. W61CE in Rutland is now... NOT in "Alarm Installation Mode" anymore !!

W61CE is back on the air with real pictures and sound from the mother ship in Burlington, or perhaps Arkansas !! The first day the temps break 80 here, and the first day in 2007 that W61CE is back in action !!

"Thank you and goodnight !!"

(clutches chest) Elizabeth!! It's the big one!! I'm coming, Elizabeth! I'm coming!

Congratulations to all who have endured this extended alarm in Rutland! And I don't care what that moron Don Imus says, you have a terrific women's basketball team there at Rutland College too!! Two reasons to be proud!

I bet I'm W61CE's one and only over the air viewer ! I wish I had some advance notice on the impending repair ! With the weather as awesome as it was here in the Green Mountain State on Monday, we could have had the ultimate "W61CE Now You Can Watch Me" welcome back bash !! Who knows, perhaps the slick and cracked W61CE and MY39 sales team (who knows if anyone actually is on the street with this) could have sold sponsorships to this momumnetal event..

Ah the possibilities !!

WOW! Incredible! Too bad WTIC-TV (FOX) channel 61 of Hartford and distance will prevent me from checking it out! (LOL)

I know that everyone on this board is so curious.. So here it is.. W61CE is still on the air functioning normally.

Awww! And I was just getting interested! Man, it must have been something. Tuning in. Day by day. Hour after hour. To the dulcet print of "Alarm Mode". It inspires me to write a book about it.

Does anyone mind if I take the accounts from "Radio-Info.com" for excerpts in the book? Don't know if it's copyright protected or anything, or if the site has proprietary dibs on it. Do I have to pay any royalties? It would be WELL worth it! Jo Jo Kracko/NO DAG will have to get a commission of course for alerting us to "alert mode"!

And just for the record, it now truly is "World Famous". I'm currently residing in Korea! ;D

And here I thought an overnight of dead air on Q106 (interestingly enough at the time also having a translator in Rutland!) was something special!

OOH check it out! I made page six!

I don't think channel 61's "Alarm Mode" is worthy of a book, but it does deserve mention in an article about the pitfalls of Equity's overreliance of satellites and their skeleton crew engineering department. Another case in point involves Marquette, Michigan's full-powered Fox affiliate (and WGMU's sister), WMQF -- while licensed in Marquette, it's signal in that city's snowy at best -- even those who live within view of the transmitter is unable to get a clear picture. And it's supposed to broadcast at about 500kw or so.

RTN's the best thing to come from Equity, though it's probably at the expense of the quality of their stations.

That's too bad that Equity would treat a market full power signal the way they treat their "ham and egg' operation in Vermont. In the case of the "World Famous W61CE" their transmitter sits in a room that has a lot of other broadcasters that share the tower. Been up there, great views of Killington and Lake Bomoseen up there, nice drive too ! Equity could have easily dropped a dime and had one of the many fine local broadcast engineers take care of the transmitter which I would believe took less than 10 minutes to fix at most.

Have yet to see a local commercial on the "World Famous W61CE".. They all seem to be 'per inquiry' type commercials.. Ginsu Knives, etc.. The sales staff, if there is such a thing, has to get movin..

Wow, W61CE is World famous ! W61CE's return to normal even made it into Mr. Fybush's world famous , credible. must read, weekly update on broadcasting in the northeast !! W61CE even had a treat on last night, the remastered episodes of Star Trek TOS, and they even had one of Kracko's favorites... "A Piece of the Action".. A masterpiece with no reasons to remaster, but what was remastered was very well done :) ! I still have yet to see one local commercial on W61CE or the mother-ship "My39" since W61CE made it's triumphant return to normacy.. Keep on "Trekkin" !!

Hey Jo Jo, ( ;D tee hee, think of JoJo's Circus... what have we learned today?)

For those who were unable to experience the wonder and amusement that was W61CE Rutland before the all-new programming style, do you think you could create a website that we could go to to reenact the wonder that was the "ALARM MODE" style of programming? Then, after however many days you noticed it off the air, you could display a picture of something "My"-oriented for a day or so. ;) Then recycle!

:-*

Just to update.. W61CE is still on the air, no alarm modes here.. Got to keep this thread out there and fresh..

Awwwwwwwwww! That sucks! No technical dificulties slide...ever? :p

When you're a repeater of a station that gets its entire programming off the satellite, "Alarm Mode" is as close to "Technical Difficulties" or "Please Stand By" as you'll ever get.

Funny you should mention Marquette...

I was there last week, and tuned in (via cable in the Hotel...) - Cable still carries WLUK on cable channel 11, and WMQF on cable 14 - with no syndex blackouts...

The best part was watching the promos for "Fox Montana" during the breaks - the bug had Fox 19, WMQF, IDs were correct, but the promos were saying "Fox Montana" all over them - don't know if the programs and/or times were correct (since the demise of TV Guide...), but ya gotta luv the "features" of central-casting...
