And, interestingly, some of the very best, too. Whether or not one agrees with their political bent, the Times and Sunday Times in the UK, the Wall Street Journal in the US and the Australian in Australia provide some of the most comprehensive and high-quality news coverage to be found in any newspaper in the world. (The Journal's news report is arguably better, and inarguably more extensive than it was in the days of Bancroft family ownership.)
It is widely believed that Murdoch continues to operate his newspapers more as a point of personal pride and family heritage than for profit; numerous well-sourced articles over the years have suggested that the News Corp. board would be very happy to exit the newspaper business if Murdoch didn't insist on keeping his fingers smudged with newsprint, as it were.
