WABC interrupts Rush for... Lindsay Lohan News???

Murdoch publishes the worst "newspapers" in the English-speaking world.

And, interestingly, some of the very best, too. Whether or not one agrees with their political bent, the Times and Sunday Times in the UK, the Wall Street Journal in the US and the Australian in Australia provide some of the most comprehensive and high-quality news coverage to be found in any newspaper in the world. (The Journal's news report is arguably better, and inarguably more extensive than it was in the days of Bancroft family ownership.)

It is widely believed that Murdoch continues to operate his newspapers more as a point of personal pride and family heritage than for profit; numerous well-sourced articles over the years have suggested that the News Corp. board would be very happy to exit the newspaper business if Murdoch didn't insist on keeping his fingers smudged with newsprint, as it were.

I also heard this great one too:

(News Sounder)

"Here's the latest from ABC news...

Big speech from the President today about immigration but first this breaking news: Actress Lindsay Lohan has been taken to the hospital, she was found collapsed in her hotel room....."

And then at the end of the newscast,

"We now have a report that she is back on the set of her movie. Daria Albinger, ABC news."

Well, if this doesn't sum up what's wrong with the "news", nothing does. And this was on NATIONAL ABC news!!!!!!

Celebrity worship is exactly what is wrong with the "news" media in this country. It seems that these people are trying to emulate the National Enquirer, rather than the New York Times or the Chicago Tribune. And they are the same people who think that Barbara Walters and Rhona Barrett are "journalists". This country is going to hell in a handbasket and all these people care about is a third-rate actress?

National Enquirer is so 1990's. The public stopped paying attention to that tabloid once it was a victim to the Anthrax attacks the week after 9/11 and when TMZ overtook them for the most viewed tabloid in the USA. The problem here is that Time Warner(CNN and HLN) and ABC-TV national news has evidence that their demographics are also people that spend their time on TMZ. On the other hand MSNBC and Fox News have evidence that their audience spend most of their time on Political blogs.

I spend a little of my time at Burger King, but that doesn't mean I want it when I go to Ruth's Criss Steakhouse. The same holds true for ABC news. Just because some people watch TMZ and also listen to ABC news, doesn't mean they want to hear it on ABC news. It has it's place, and that is on TMZ.

It's hard to take ABC news seriously when they interrupt a newscast about the President with "breaking news" about Lohan. If I were the GM of an ABC affiliate and I heard that on my station, the 90 day cancellation would have been on their fax right after that newscast.

Sadly, I don't see that kind of fortitude in broadcast management most anywhere these days.

And even more sadly the general viewership doesn't seem to notice or care either. Mass media journalism seems to have abandoned its credibility.

Terrific, noisy, 'round in circles thread. It's great to see such emotion.

Got just a question or two:
Who the devil is Lindsay Lohan?
I recall seeing pictures of her, casually. Pretty girl. Once caught on video-cam in the act of shopping? Is she an actress, or a singer? Or is she simply just this generation's re-heated Drew Barrymore?

And who was Drew Barrymore, anyway?

There are too many radio stations and 'news services'.
Yawn. Gimme my mP3 files and WinAmp and leave me alone to vote my wallet, for crying out loud.

Yeahhh. It's 2012. SO what? I'm NOT an old fart complaining here, I'm in the target demo of this "stupid news". Mid 30's. And it's a disgrace that a national newscast gets interrupted for news about a drunken mess that contributes nothing to society. Especially given that the president had just given a speech of importance.

There are places for the fluff non-news, that's what TMZ is for or a morning show. But for the national ABC newscast to interrupt news about the president of the country for Lindsay Lohan is a joke.

That's the problem with 2012.

I'm in my 20's and I'm the target demo of this TMZ stuff. Ask anybody with a college degree in the Science and Engineering and say "Do you Know Amy Winehouse or Lindsey Lohan?" Nobody with a Biotech Degree would know who these people are. But everybody with a Biology Degree would all know who J. Craig Venter and Francis Collins are. But everybody in my major of biology would know more about immigration policies from Congress and President Obama than the TMZ audience would because most people in my major are from China, Philippines, Vietnam, Mexico, Honduras, India and Pakistan.

Getting back to the original topic: Screwing up Rush's program.

This could easily have been the WABC computer. Often at the TOH and BOH, the computer starts running the fill-in spots that can't be aired on-line. However, when it is time for the program to start, the ads just keep running!

The "breaking News" junk that was heard when Rush should have been on , is the type of stuff they are often running now during the stop-sets rather than the same "call 1-800" spots they had been running repeatedly.

Since Rush's program originates from out-of-the-city, they probably are paying no attention to the on-air content.

Nope. This was Ken Duffy breaking in live around 2:20p or so. He specifically said at the end that we're now returning you to Rush's show in progress.

OMG...what you don't know about how radio works could fill a book! Laughable!

I have been in the business for 35 years, including PD and OM.

That includes stand alone AMs, AM FM combos, live assist computer in every form.
