WBNX Fall 2022

Most 80s and 90s shows have now been sucked up by all the various classic TV diginets like MeTV (and all of its spinoffs), Antenna TV (with its 80s/90s focused spinoff Rewind TV), Cozi TV and Get TV.

They're just not there to be had.
I vaguely remember watching Green Acres on WUAB back in 2003, and by then, that was about the last of any classic TV show produced prior to the '90s airing on broadcast TV. Along with the loss of syndicated kids shows, most of those schedules became devoted to court and talk shows. WBNX aired Andy Griffith on 55.2 several years ago, perhaps in an attempt to give the channel more of a throwback of their original independent format prior to The WB affiliation, but I assume that a lack of program availability as well as advertisers prevented them from expanding it further. Their affiliations with Movies, H&I, Decades, and to a degree, Buzzr do help fill the void of their original classic format prior to The WB, and it's great that they've decided to pick up those networks. Imagine if they had MeTV as well. They would be the classic super station!

I've often wondered if or how many of them are still out there to be had. For suppositions sake: MeTV airs M*A*S*H, but could an 8.1, 43.1, or 55.1 pick it up as syndicated programming? (I think one steadfast rule was that it can't air when the other network has rights to the timeslot first).

It equally becomes a dice roll with availability, lead-in's and advertising revenue. I find it only slightly awkward that 55.2 airs the Newlywed Game at 9:30 pm - right before an hour long block of local religious programming.

Many of the shows mentioned appeal to older, less saleable demographics. Big cable has first reruns with newer shows like two broke girls, modern family, mom, the office. Judge and reality talk shows target the audience they believe is watching local TV.

If Fox 8 puts more news on, they might as well rebrand back to "ei8ht IS NEWS" (and, for the scant couple of hours of non-news programming, "FOX IS ei8ht"). I'm honestly surprised Tribune hasn't syndicated out any of the NewsNation programming for same-day reruns on the stations that they own. You'd think that, with as much forced pimping out of NewsNation that Fox 8 has to do, they'd be entitled to get next-day reruns of the primetime lineup.

WBNX, for a truly independent station, has a pretty decent lineup. It's more varied than a majority of the cable channels out there, but I do wish that they'd bring back the old traditional "55" logo, since they've gone back to calling themselves "TV55."

Yeah, and pound that branding into everybody's memory until they've had enough of it, just like before whenever the newscast went to a commercial break, came back from a commercial break, and during the "coming up..." promos. Diving for the remote to mute today's obnoxious commercials is bad enough, but I wonder how many viewers developed anxiety back in the day wondering when that scary "ei8ht Is News" voice over and music was going to suddenly appear during the commercial break?

That original 55 logo would be considered dated by today's standards, unless they give it a modern look. It didn't look too bad combined with the WB logo from 1997, though it was modernized slightly. By 2003, it was showing its age, and I believe that was when they replaced it with a localized variant of the network logo, dropping the channel position in the process. I do miss the top-of-the-hour ID sequence where they sang "we are family and we show it... TV 55", but let's face it, an animated logo sequence like that isn't coming back, not when they can shove an ad in at the same time for one (or two) of their shows. At least we still get a jingle of "we're better together".

Speaking of modern logos, it appears that Antenna TV just revised their logo a few days ago, with "Antenna TV" all in lowercase, and with the "TV" wording being inside the existing TV graphic.

WUAB is now airing the court shows (Supreme Justice and America's Court) on Sunday afternoons after they were displaced to make room for more local news.

Saturdays as well.

I guess they have to fulfill the obligations until the end of the season.

I'd be surprised if they came back next season, as this kind of scheduling screams "playing out the string".

As they usually do this time of year, WBNX TV 55 has released their fall schedule.

On weekdays there will be a few tweaks, as coming in will be The Neighborhood (CBS sitcom starring Cedric the Entertainer debuting in syndication), Chicago PD (returning to syndication, and matched up with Chicago Fire which debuted last year), Jennifer Hudson's new talk show, the new Pictionary game show hosted by Jerry O'Connell, and the new true crime oriented show iCrime hosted by Elizabeth Vargas.

Leaving weekdays is Mike and Molly (leaving syndication, but seen a hundred times a day on cable), Dateline (ditto), Friends (won't be on weekdays, but 55 will carpet bomb weekends with it), canceled talk shows The Doctors and Nick Cannon, as well as a couple of low end court shows.

Speaking of weekends, WBNX will have all kinds of new syndicated stuff coming in, such as Magnum PI (the reboot currently on CBS - not the classic 80s version with Tom Selleck), 9-1-1, The Rookie, and The Good Doctor. And in a sign of the times, a new show called Ring Nation will also debut, which will be a viral video show featuring footage captured by Ring doorbell cameras

Here's the whole thing to see for yourselves
Just getting the promos fired up as we're now actually getting closer to fall.

Pictionary will be part of that long late afternoon/early evening block of game shows (featuring 3 hours of Family Feud - just for Skiwest;))

The Neighborhood - and Young Sheldon - will actually be part of a sitcom hour at 6pm that breaks up the game show monotony, otherwise 55 would have a 7-hour block. (3-10p).

Wasn't Jerry O'Connell being set up to get his own Wendy Williams-style talk show at one point? I guess it fell through, but I remember it being filmed on her set. It's good to see him getting work, but I hope Pictionary is more like the classic "Win Lose or Draw" than being too gimmick-focused and more modern. I know they'll probably draw on tablets, but part of me wants it to be more traditional in nature.

... Wait, wasn't there already a take on Pictionary back when WLoD was still running?

O'Connell is on The Talk - CBS' version of The View - weekday afternoons (The Talk has a couple of guys as part of the panel, so it isn't all women),

Jerry was one of the cavalcade of folks filling in for Wendy during her hiatus, with Sherri Shepard ultimately becoming the official full time replacement.

There was a prior Pictionary game show in 97-98 - long after WLoD - hosted by Alan Thicke. It was one season and done.

No, there was definitely a set up for Jerry to get his own show back in 2019 - Wendy was the EP, and he used her set/theme - for three weeks as a pilot run. It's up on YouTube:

As far as who should have gotten a show out of Wendy's hiatus, Leah Remini and Michelle Visage definitely need their own show or podcast, or something at the very least. Not that I don't love Sherri Shepherd, but those two definitely had a vibe!

WJW is planning to air an extra hour of Judge Judy at 11am replacing The Good Dish starting on August 30.
Good Dish bombed, and is done at the end of the week all over the country.

Only question is, is the extra hour of Judge Judy a placeholder until the new fall stuff kicks in or is it for keeps?

On September 5th, WJW has an hour of infomercials listed for 1pm, where The Real had been airing.

On the same day, WKYC is airing The Kelly Clarkson show twice at 11am and 2pm. Looks like it's replacing Ellen.

WJW has been promos running for Karamo Brown's new show debuting on September 19, and it will be M-F at 1p, so the infomercials there are just a placeholder.

Clarkson taking Ellen's 2p spot is no shock, the only question is will she also stay at 11a, or is that just a placeholder?

We really won't get the full story until 9/12 or maybe 9/19 when everything falls into place.

From Labor Day until mid September really is no man's land for local stations, as a lot of the old stuff disappears, but the new stuff hasn't started yet.
