WCKG...the end is near

How about CBS radio forcing Soul 106.3 out of its format by going Urban AC. V-103 needs some REAL competition!!!! It would be the most profitable at this point. Besides 105.9 has a much better signal than 106.3 and it would actually serve ALL of Chicago, not just the south side.

It strikes me that if ALL of Chicago wanted that format, SOME smart owner would have gone there already. Sheesh.

"Some smart owner"......this part really cracks me up...... :D

Nah, 50,000 watts at 670 KHz trumps the 50K ERP for WCKG. So I wouldn't say more powerful or stronger...just on FM.

You can't pick up AM 67 inside a high-rise office tower, but 105.9 does come in. AM signals just don't penetrate these buildings. That's where FM comes in.

Exactly.

As for the range of WCKG and WSCR, they both completely cover the entire Chicago metropolitan area. So, the only "trumps" held by WSCR are 1) small communities and farmland well outside the Chicago market, and 2) nighttime/skywave listeners. Neither of those two groups tilt the scale when weighed against the superior building penetration of FM. Now, having The Score on both signals isn't a bad idea, but as more and more buildings (including suburban houses) are built with steel in addition to wood, I would want an FM stick over AM.

I was unable to listen to WCKG on Friday 10/26 or Monday 10/29. Was Garry able to say goodbye to his listeners or give any idea what was next for him? I see the website has already changed so his archive of past shows is already gone.

I know the numbers were bad but as a long time G.M. listeners, I will really miss his show. You could tell he was having a good time and his supporting cast, Salerno, Elton Jim etc. made for 3 hours of some good radio.

He was able to say goodbye, today, Monday. Seemed like business as usual then just stated it was his last show. Show took the ususal trajectory, but Randy (Mr. Funny Low Talker) was missed--something about a trip to Vegas! ;)
He gave a heartfelt goodbye and played an appropriate Beatles tune...classy. It's a shame. The three of them were funny--I could do without the shrill newsgal--good company in the morning. Nothing too deep yet issues put out there for discussion.
I'd love to see him on a station inbetween the more blue collar ckg and hi falutin npr....don't think that exists.
I'm glad everyone on the station got a chance to say goodbye.
