WCMS on the Outer Banks looking again???

stevations said:
The car incident relates to someone stopping short in front of me and making a slow turn...I had to go around them to avoid a skid. A car going the other way was upset I went in the middle lane which would not have endangered their car, so it was none of his business unless they are a law officer. Outer Banks is the only place I know that has a restaurant called Eat and Get the Hell OUT. (I am not making this up) I was working at a job in Nags Head and the owners were too lazy to fire me so I show up for work and they look at me like...what are you doing here? The bridge to the cape was out and they hired some of their buddies that could not go south. This was a bunch of years ago so maybe things are better there now. It can be a boring place also. Some people like it, more power to you...just thought I would warn some people since they may not be able to afford to leave due to the high cost of living and low wages. Some others can use it as a stepping stone and move on. I have other stories but I think this is enough. If I had a family I would rather raise them in an area that had more diverse variety than an isolated area.

Lol. You're talking about Bob's Restaurant...their slogan is "Eat and get the hell out" and yes, it's on their sign outside. It's one of the mom & pops that have been here for years. It does a great business and the food is as good as you'd expect for a place like that. It's not a 5 star restaurant, but, for what it does, it's better than an IHOP or Waffle House. As for the slogan, some businesses use that tact. There's a place in Columbia, SC called Cromers Peanuts(which is kind of an all purpose novelty store/specialty shop) and their slogan is "Cromers Peanuts...guaranteed WORST in town!" Cromer's has been around since Christ was a corporal and, for what IT does, it thrives too. I had to laugh out loud when you mentioned Bob's though...the fact that you remembered and mentioned it basically lends credibility to their strategy. No offense intended, just an observation.

But, getting back to your points, again, sorry you had bad experiences here. It is, to most of us, paradise on Earth and one of the best kept secrets around regarding resort areas...which, while seeming like a negative to you and some others, lends a measure of charm, elegance and a certain "je ne sais quoi" to the area that I haven't found in other resort areas I've lived in.

I know someone who moved there a couple of years ago and he loves it....but he is self employed and not there half of the time. I remember when I was there that in separate occasions waitresses told me they did not like it there.....they had to work 12 to 14 hours a day at separate restaurants so they could afford to live. One girl was there since she grew up there and moved back because her moms health was failing but she planned to move away ASAP. I admit that I do like Darrells Restaurant. I think if someone is warned not to expect much they might think the area is OK. It depends on what they like or expect and it is not for most people but maybe it is for them just the way you feel.

Fair enough...I understand where you're coming from and agree to an extent. But, to be fair, I've also often heard people complain about living wherever it was that they lived. The whole "grass is greener" thing, I guess.

The answer is no, not yet. I have a ton of applicants to get through for both this opening and another we have open.

The WCMS gig is tough. While it is a very small market (based on year round population) much is expected of the person who will fill this role. As I stated in the ad this is not an entry level position. Max is a good company though and we to make an effort to do good radio and serve our community.

Stevations... I am very careful to point out to all that living in a tourist area presents challenges. In fact that issue always makes the hiring process here drag on a bit longer than usual. I am confident I will find a good person who wants to be here and understands the challenges.

I am not a native but have found the place to be very welcoming and in the almost 9 years I have been here I have made some great friends. I am sorry for your bad experience but I have been coming out here since the 60's and NEVER had any experience like yours. I did not realize road rage was exclusive to the Outer Banks. Also I think it may be a bit of a stretch to use your work experience here... from how many years ago, and with who?... to try to lead people to think that their experience will be similar. While I can't speak for other operators we do try our best to treat our folks with respect and give them a decent place to work. Our place is far from perfect but it is better than it was when we bought the stations, and hopefully gets a little better each year. Thanks to a tough economy our staff is small but nobody is too overworked... except for me ;>).

So... yes the job is still open. Please do respect the "no calls". The number of applicants is mind-boggling for a market this size. I do have work duties other than hiring for these positions.

Thanks,

Mike "Moose" Smith

Mike, why is it that these "experts" who "got burned" by this business and most often are no longer directly working in this business, always seem to be (at least in their own minds anyway) the "experts" in this business who are so quick to point out all the "problems" with this business? If they knew as much as they say they know about it, maybe they would still be "in" this business!

Sooo, Mike....

Care to mention what the other position might be with WCMS? Another on-air position?

I would love to move back to the Outer Banks.

Found this entertaining, informative thread while searching for some opinions on 92.9 The Wave in Norfolk flipping to Greatest Hits. No posts on that topic.

Always good to see a GM posting on the boards. Good thoughts, Mike. This also happens occasionally on the Buffalo-Niagara Falls-Rochester board when Rochester's Mike Doyle, Entercom Regional VP, chimes in.

I've vacationed a few times years ago with my family at Nags Head. We always found it enjoyable. The locals are colorful, a bit provincial (just like we are in Buffalo), but always hospitable (again, just like we are in Buffalo.) I was a "tourista con dinero" so of course you'd expect them to be nice. Bottom line, I'd like to visit again. Nothing like a sunrise over the Atlantic or a sunset over the Sound viewed from Kill Devil Hills. The radio always sounded "local," which is a compliment.

Mike's an ok guy I guess...unless you're playing Risk with him and few old radio friends, that is. lol. But those were very kind and complimentary words, Mr. Pastrick...not to mention very true. Thank you. Come see us again, soon.

Just to toss in my opinion...Max Media is a great organization to work for, and Moose is one of the most hands-on, get-in-there-and-do-what-it-takes GMs you'll ever meet. He's a real pro, and a great guy to work for/with. The Outer Banks, like any market, presents unique challenges, but if you remember the business is all about connecting with people, you'll never find an audience anywhere that treats you kinder. It's small town radio done with the right kind of philosophy, and my experience is, they'll give you the tools to win. You just gotta use 'em.

I believe the man asked :

"so did they ever hire a new morning guy?"

did they?

I'd work for Moose any day of the week, in any market in America. A class guy who has a great feal for what radio should be!

Absolutely...I couldn't have said it better, Mike. By the way, Moose has hired a PD for WCMS...but I'll let him make the "Big Reveal".

Thanks X-Talker and Summers!

Mark Lindow, last with "Froggy" in Pittsburgh, PA is the new WCMS PD/AM Drive host. It took awhile but as has been pointed out this is a unique situation as it is a tourist market. I don' rush these decisions either. The staff may be small but the folks that work here are all great people who keep this running. We couldn't do it without them. There are many things here we could do better too. Adding Mark to the staff will help us tons!

Thanks to all that inquired. I know I will not be able to contact everyone who sent materials. I wear many hats around here!

By the way as an imaging voice for Water Country I found the company to be completely up and above board, and truly interested in doing good radio.

@Jeff...small world, I voice classic hits 104.9 WFMZ/Wanchese. Love working with Moose, Matt Cooper & Co! Need to stream
