WEGO 980 in Winston-Salem

I do miss the Days when a PD was just that... a PD. If you did good congrats. If you didn't do so good you took the heat. This would make an interesting discussion I think.

Anyone who has been in radio the last 10-12 years know that Program Directors and Operation Managers have NO say so in what goes on the air anymore. They can make suggestions, but all decisions come from the top. Then the PD's and OM's are made to do the dirty work. And yes, they take the blame too.

I feel WSJS is doing what every other AM radio station in the world is doing...adapt and survive. That is the name of the game. News At Noon is capitalizing on at work listening. Not to mention online listening as well. Online listening is the "in" thing now. If TV is doing News At Noon, why not radio? The same can be said about traffic reports at lunch. Why have them? Because someone said it was needed.

I wish WEGO and WSJS all the luck in the world. No matter if you like the programming or not, I hope both stations survive and make an impact.

If they have no input then what are they doing there?

If a station doesn't have a Program Director that isn't making decisions, it's usually a station in a downfall or that's a complete mess. Let's get into sales guys thinking they know how to program....I think everyone can agree on that one.

Noon news on radio makes ZERO sense, ZERO. Why not radio? People are actually watching television at lunch in restaurants, in the lunch room/cafeteria, they're usually stable at that hour. Radio is a medium for people on the go. Noon is an idiotic time, Mid-Days are notoriously the time when people DON'T listen to radio. As opposed to TV when some people are watching.

I wish all the luck in the world to WEGO, I really tried to hang onto WSJS but they've disappointed me too many times over the years. I wish no ill will towards them but I certainly won't be listening.

I listened to The Eagle 980 some this morning. The signal is very weak for me, but I am not in Forsyth. Anyway, the morning show had lots of phone calls, which surprised me for a new station with limited signal. Smith Patterson sounds good on news.

Too weak for me too....they need to start streaming very soon. I miss Smith bringing me my news in the morning. A lot of us have smartphones and internet radios! That stream is almost more important at this point than what is going out over that little AM signal!

Ditto's on the streaming. I brought in my GE Super Radio (top notch AM receiver section) and could not pick them up on my 3rd floor widow office in High Point.

If their biggest problem is people wanting to hear them better, that's a good problem. Don't know if they will ever be a major player with that signal, but they sure can be a spoiler for any triad news/talk. Anyone know if Curtis is losing revenue to them ? And Rush 945 depends on Forsyth County to make their numbers. Flynn is getting up to speed which is better than the thought of him in congress. Carry on WEGO.

And dollars move fast in radio, if not always in large amount. Their Facebook posting says that streaming prep is almost finished. Hey, don't they need a website first ? Haven't found anything about that.

Funny you mention that....honestly, a stream and a social media presence is literally more important than your website.

Obviously they still need a homepage but they're spot on for getting going on that stream. Get it into TuneIn and some of the radio streaming platforms. Hell maybe their own 980 The Eagle App!

I'm looking forward to listening.

Also about the WSJS thing and losing money, 980 the eagle will take some time to build an audience. That signal is brutal, where the heck do you start picking it up east of Winston-Salem? I was in Kernersville trying to pick it up and got NOTHING.

They do have a slot for a web page:

http://www.eagle980.com/

Also, I've been listening to them on my morning drive from south of High Point to Greensboro. While the signal is weak, it's certainly clear enough to listen to.

Hope they do well.

I can remember when there was no place in Winston-Salem I could pick it up worth anything. Maybe I was in the wrong part of town, but seriously? Even if it was night power, it ought to cover the city.

well, mike huckabee replay is on now (after midnight saturday morning)

i haven't heard any open carrier.

Why is it every news/talk has audio overlapping issues ? For instance portions of station promos on top of the syndicated hosts ? Smart technology isn't smart enough to handle this seamlessly every time ? Happens on Rush, SJS and WEGO, and about every other one I've heard regardless of market size.

They're not streaming (or not streaming yet). Can they not afford it or do they not consider it that advantageous?

They are working on streaming...just taking a while to get all the computers to co-operate I expect. I understand that is the problem causing the overlaps that they and others have.
