WEGO 980 in Winston-Salem

Interesting how y'all have generated 7 or 8 pages and 60+ comments on what is still effectively a killowatt daytimer providing competitive coverage to a fraction of a pretty large geographic market. Under the best of circumstances WEGO is not physically capable of racking up a share or two.

Ten bucks says all hell breaks loose the first time WF plays a night game and the 49 night-time watts leaves thousands of Demon Deacon fans pissed off. Or is someone else in the market carrying them, too?

I wish them well. I think they can carve out a niche.

Two suggestions for them. The 'screaming eagle' "ID" sound is so very very annoying. That should be dumped immediately. Also that music that they have come up for Flynn after breaks is pretty dreadful too...that could be improved upon.

Unless something's changed, WBRF is still the flagship of Wake Forest sports.

100kW. From a mountain. IMG. Eppersons. $$$ to be shared.
Some combination thereof. Mix it all up however you wish it to be mixed.
Net result: WFU sports + WBRF= "flagship."
Or maybe Galax College must've been outbid?

I think WBRF is holding out for Wythe Community College (Wytheville) to get a team ;D

Honestly, I see nothing wrong with WBRF being WF flagship. At least WBRF is the only 100k LOCAL left in town - no cookie cutter, corporate crap.

Indeed it's the same for 97.3 and App State. WATA carries App State too at 1000 glorious watts. I'm sure no one listens to the AM but I guess it makes them warm and fuzzy to promote it.

(it sounds mean, but I really don't mean it to be. just the truth.)

WEGO is a minor signal as has been said. And they have significant triad non-coverage issues, too. But they are generating a buzz beyond this forum. Some non-radio types are excited about this new station and don't know or care that they it's a 1kw. It may be related to listeners feeling abandoned by SJS. Folks know they are a huge underdog. People love underdogs. The callers say as much on air.

Seeing a number of mentions about the Eagle on social media. Doesn't appear to be directly from the station but related to Flynn's show. Is this a silent marketing campaign the station is doing with shills, or are some real folks actually showing a little enthusiasm ? Does their target demo even do facebook ?

On the subject of Wake Forest on the radio, WDRU 1030 is airing the games. That station has a strong signal but can't broadcast at night. At least Burlington and Raleigh are covered now.

While it's not much help for Burlington or Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill can hear WDRU 24/7 via FM translator W288BU (105.5 MHz).

Can I expect Savage to be on 980 The Eagle?

He recently broke off of Talk Radio Network syndication and is returning to the air tonight with a Cumulus syndication

I'm sure WSJS is asleep at the wheel, we've got Dennis Miller and Dr. Joy Browne re-runs on.....

WEGO...get SAVAGE....make your lineup complete!

Here's what needs to happen.

Curtis needs to trade WSJS for WEGO. WEGO would fill in the gap for WCOG and WMFR at night. Maybe. Then WSJS could have the good programming. It has too strong a signal to be just the Winston-Salem station in the Triad Sports Network.

WEGO had a killer interview in the 9a hour today. A woman from John Locke in Raleigh. Flynn also had an engaging discussion about religion and politics earlier in the morning. Civil but very revealing. They are far from perfect, but making noise like nobody else in this market. GOWEGO.

And Epperson would do that because??? WSJS always tried to be a regional station, but outside of syndicated programs, was always dominated by Winston-Salem. Today, it is dominated by inane conversation not worthy of the water cooler.

That and I don't see Greensboro clamoring for a news talk station these days either. WSJS will always be a Winston-Salem station. Too much history to undo.

Savage is too much of a double-edged sword; he repels as many listeners as he acquires. I wouldn't advise WEGO to pursue that avenue. As for WSJS, it really doesn't matter what they do or don't do, at this point. Its obvious the staff and in-house management are just going through the motions. They know what's coming.
