Weigel Buying W27EA-D in Cleveland/Akron

Another binge watchers channel featuring old History Channel and A&E programs from back when those were real, not reality, channels. Like watching Saturday morning educational shows.
I enjoyed the quirky mix of bizarre old shows and Canadian mysteries Retro had. Where else can Retro be found here? I hope someone else picks them up. And where is the Son of Ghoul landing?

I tuned in last night to check it out. I'm still having the same reception issues where it will come in fine, then I get blue screen and no signal for a while. Not sure why that happens. I'm in south Parma, only a couple miles from the transmitter. I don't recall having than problem when they were on 16.
I have never seen any kind of blue screen on W27EA-D. Does this happen on any of your other TVs?

Both Retro & SOG will probably be available again once WIVX-LD starts broadcasting from North Royalton, but don't expect their RF 13 signal to be as strong or as reliable as W27EA-D.

Retro can be streamed from their website here, but IIRC, some programing is substituted as they don't have the streaming rights for those shows. SOG, I think, can be seen on WIVM-LD's website as they have an online stream of their .1 sub. 8 PM on Sundays.

My screen goes blue when it loses the signal. I only have one TV and I'm using an indoor rabbit ears antenna.
Sounds like possible multipath or interference from another station, seeing that you're that close to the Parma towers.

You mentioned a rabbit ears antenna. Does it have UHF capability, like a loop or bowtie element? That can very well be the problem right there. The long rabbit ears are primarily for VHF, more specifically, lo-VHF, RF channels 2-6 when fully extended. Retracting them practically all the way in would help with UHF due to its much shorter wavelength.

Another guess could be the TV's tuner. My Sanyo will occasionally lose WEWS for a split second, even though it constantly gets a SNR of 32 dB. Other devices connected to the same antenna do not experience this at all, and it doesn't do this on other stations, so it's something that the Sanyo doesn't like about WEWS. I don't think it does this anymore, but that same Sanyo had issues programming in WVPX during a scan when it was still on RF 23, even though my other devices had no issues. It would eventually find it after 2-3 re-scans. My point being, is that some devices may not tolerate certain stations well depending on how they are configured or the amount of interference that's being subjected to the signal.

Yes, my antenna has the bowtie element. I suppose I can play around with it to see if it makes a difference. It has not been a big deal since I don't watch 35 very often. However, with the new programming that might be coming, I may want to watch more frequently.

I tuned in during the time that "The Son of Ghoul" was to be on Channel 35. It wasn't. Something called "Story Television" is the network they are carrying, at least as of now. Story Television is showing an episode of, what looks like a videotaped, Documentary series called "Ancient Mysteries". BOORRIINNGG. Anybody have an idea where "The Son of Ghoul" and RetroTV went, if anywhere? I also check out, every week, these RetroTV offerings: "The Drive-In Movie Maniacs" on Friday nights, "Off Beat Cinema" and "Lamia-Queen of The Dark" (Saturday nights @10pm and midnight)... and she's based in North East Ohio, and "Halloween Harvey's Festival of Fear" on Sunday nights @10pm.

I live in Southwest Cuyahoga County. I've not wanted to re-program my TV set-up for fear of losing "Retro TV". Maybe I should do it if this "Story Television" turns out to be, consistently, Boring Television. I have rabbit ears in the house.

The only good thing about losing Retro TV is that I'll, probably, never have to accosted by another, umpteenth, showing of the movie "Teenage Zombies" as all of the aforementioned shows run that one and, in some cases, way too often.

Read my reply to Santa Fe a few posts above for alternatives and as to where SOG & Retro may re-appear in the Greater Cleveland area.

I highly doubt that SOG will return to 35. If anything, a public affairs program produced by Weigel, probably titled Ohio & Me, will eventually be the only local content that will air in order to meet FCC guidelines.

Story Television features different themes every day, all documentary programming, so based on your interests, some days maybe more interesting than others, which should cover different topics every week. Right now, from what I'm told, the network is being served a placeholder until Weigel can install equipment for additional subchannels. This should happen in the next 3-4 months, and may likely bump Story TV to another subchannel in favor for MeTV+ or a HD feed of MeTV on the main .1 sub.

Will WOIO have to get new programming soon for 19.2? (That should be filled with a simulcast of Telemundo Cleveland if and when MeTV goes to 35)

I don't know what the outcome will be. It would make sense for Weigel to continue to keep MeTV on a full power station rather than move it to a low power station and decrease viewership in distant and problematic areas of the market. There's a possibility that WBNX may replace Start TV with MeTV in November, should WOIO decide not to renew MeTV's contract at the end of September, sending Start TV to -and possibly being exclusive to- W27EA-D. This would also mean that MeTV will likely be exclusive to W27EA-D for a few months, unless WBNX wants to light up another sub, at least temporary until their Start TV contract runs out. In the end, however it plays out, we will likely have 2 MeTV affiliates, with W27EA-D carrying a HD feed as a bonus for those who can receive the station.

And yes, I do see Gray wanting to place a SD simulcast of WTCL-LD/Telemundo on one of WOIO's or WUAB's subchannels so that they can reach areas like Akron & Canton. Their contract with MeTV would be the earliest to end, with Bounce being the latest, ending in 2026.

Would there be many potential viewers for Telemundo in Akron & Canton?
The only other possibility is freeing up bandwidth to carry a ATSC 1.0 subchannel from the station that becomes the ATSC 3.0 lighthouse. They probably can't wait until 2026 for Bounce's contract to end as Scripps will not offer a renewal on it anyhow, and Gray probably intends to hold onto Dabl and possibly Rewind TV for the time being. I currently don't see WOIO/WUAB picking up another network in place of an existing one, unless it's a shopping network or one that's going to launch soon.

W27EA-D has lit up a new subchannel; 35.12, with the label EMLW.

Currently it's displaying color bars and a test tone, along with the text "Weigel NOC" and a clock.

NOC - "Northern Ohio/Cleveland"? Just speculating, but they still bring us more promise than most of cable TV offers.

Good guess, but no...

There are now reports that practically every Weigel O&O station now has a .12 sub that's displaying the same test pattern. The EMLW in the label links it to Movies!, though that doesn't mean that Movies! will end up on W27EA-D. The "MLW" is likely the calls of their Milwaukee station, WMLW. As of now, there are really no details, other than this sub potentially being an engineering test. It was mentioned earlier that Weigel intends to add more subs to W27EA-D in the fall, once additional equipment is installed. Seeing that 35.12 is on the air suggests that such equipment is now installed and operational. We'll see what eventually happens.

Not holding out much hope it'll be something interesting. Hard to beat the out of date reruns of quasi-educational shows they have now.
The proliferation of diginets and streaming services has operators running out of product. They've already delved deep into the vaults and come up with some pretty obscure shows and movies from the past. Few of them are creating new programming, so what's left? Maybe reruns of old network newscasts or classic test patterns from the golden age of TV!

Any update when WIVX will begin transmitting from North Royalton? I would like to see retro TV and their local shows.

Eventually there will need to be some consolidation of diginets. As for what's left, I suppose some really, really old stuff like Laurel and Hardy, Little Rascals, Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, Charlie Chaplin, etc. Although the woke crowd might be offended by some of it, especially Little Rascals.
