wfnx: 4th morning show this year.

I was on Facebook and saw that WFNX has yet another new morning drive show starting Monday. In their own statement they say that DJ W No Name has never even met Henry Santoro but they are teaming up today. Fletcher , D-Tension, Jim Ryan now a new guy. D-Tension and Jim Ryan are still on the air so it is not like they were fired. I am so confused. Their own listeners are complaining about it. Does consistency matter anymore?

You mean they've had 4 morning shows on that station this year alone? It shows one thing: WFNX is in trouble. Their alternative format may be in danger of disappearing from the airwaves. Then I'll have to switch to the internet or Music Choice for my alternative music.

FNX listeners are a small but loyal bunch. You can get music anywhere these days, but FNX also puts on great concerts and intimate acoustic things throughout the year. Spotify doesn't do that. Sadly, the Phoenix has always meddled with it too much, and management has been trigger happy with morning shows for years.

Response to DJ No Name hasn't been very enthusiastic so far, but people hated the Sandbox when they first started and there was practically a revolt when the show was killed off a year or two later. I think D-Tension improved tremendously in just a couple of weeks and should have earned himself the spot for longer than he had it. I'm sure No Name will do just fine, but with so much homegrown talent, why did they even go there?

I'll say this, as someone who has both listened to No name when he was on the End & worked with him he's a very talented guy, easy to get along with, easy to work with and having worked with Henry I know what a pro he is so I would be VERY surprised if they didn't work out.
If anything I see them being very successful, No Name is a very creative guy and Henry who is hilarious and very quick witted should do very well!

Having seen the numbers, I don't understand why FNX is going through all this trouble to have a morning show with FOUR people on it. Everybody else is yakking away and trying to be funny, FNX has music that isn't found elsewhere on the dial in Boston (at least some of it, anyway) so shut up, play the tunes and give me some news, traffic and weather quickly mixed in.

And "No Name" is a really dumb radio name. Just use your damn name, and that goes for all stupid radio names. Have always hated dumb radio names. No Name, D-Tension... sheez, how about Ben Dover or one of the other names from the end of Car Talk while we're at it.

They don't have 4 people on the show yakking. There are two people on the show, No Name and Henry. I meant to explain that in this calendar year this is their 4th different host. So far reaction has been vicious. I will give the guy a chance but so far all No Name is good at is not knowing how to run a board and how to announce that he has made yet another mistake. He hasn't so much as made me smile and I've never been into jocks who YELL.

As for stage names, in D-Tension's defense he has had a very successful career as a hip hop artist and had the name long before he was ever in radio.

Let No Name settle into the studio, get comfortable, I assure you he will deliver!
As for the name thing, are you F'n serious? Come on now, who the hell cares what a guy calls himself so long as he delivers fun, interesting content.
Now people are just being extremely ticky tack!

Nah, I've always hated stupid DJ names. "Larry the Duck" etc. Makes jocks sound like circus clowns and not real people. Alex Trebek, Pat Sajack and Larry King didn't call themselves "Wally the Wonder Weasel" or "Rat Face Jimmy".

It's one thing to change your last name to either keep your identity harder to find (something I told especially a lot of female jocks to do) or if you have a really unradio last name... but these goofy names like "No Name" or "Human Newman" just make radio be taken even less seriously by the audience. A bad radio name seems so 80's and before to me.

Agree with you 100%.

Someone who calls himself "Human Newman" actually programs several channels, including '70s on 7, for Sirius XM. Which market's Human Newman this is, I have no idea. (I'm assuming there've been several using the gimmick name over the years.)

yeah for real. bitchin' about a radio name......give this dude a chance to do his thing... he's starting from ground up. I never understood why people can't just be stoked for someone who got a job... instead of being obviously insanely jealous and taking it out on the radio boards on radio-info....

Larry King didn't call himself Larry Ziegler, either, but his parents did. Actually, I'd like him better if he had called himself Rat Face Jimmy.

Trust me, I'm not jealous of a guy getting up at 4am to do a morning show on FNX. I did the morning show thing years ago, and swore I would never do it again. I'm not jealous of anyone going to bed at 9:30 at night for the kind of pay that FNX is paying.

I'm glad the guy got the chance, I wish him luck. Better him than me getting up at that hour, and my only half-complaint is that radio in general uses stupid names and makes itself sound really stupid by doing so in almost 2012. I would have thought the dumb name gimmick would have died out by now.

That was part of my original point: If someone had an "unradio" name and changed it to something still normal sounding, it still sounds like a real person. And at the time Larry was coming up in radio, most people changed their Jewish heritage name to a different stage name. Today, I don't see why another kid named Larry Ziegler would have to bother with trying to hide his Jewish name. It isn't 1960 anymore, thankfully.

In a Bizarro world in my mind I've always thought how funny NPR would be if they had adopted goofy radio names...

Human Numan is a well-known Top 40 guy who worked for a bunch of big FM stations before heading to Sirius XM, including Z100 in New York, KIIS-FM in Los Angeles and the old WZOU.

Yepp, I remember him from Z-100 back in the 80's early 90's.

I can only speak for me. I am not jealous and you might feel differently about the guy if you heard his train wreck of a show. I listened to give the guy a chance. Anyone else hear him? This wasn't a matter of "give him a chance" or "he'll get there". This is a disaster. I can honestly say I have never heard anything this bad on the FM dial. I am talking about playing spots and songs at the same time. Playing the same song twice in a row and not realizing it until it plays for two minutes then dropping the song, starting a new one and then repeating the mistake. He said ON THE AIR "I can't run a board and host this show at the same time." He can't run the board at all. I am shocked, not jealous.

Regardless, the station sounds better than since I came to Boston in 1995. I am now going out of the way to tune in, which is a bit odd for a professional as busy as I am. The music is terrific; most of the grunge has finally been put to pasture (i.e. 92.9) and resultingly the station sounds fresh and exciting, musically.

the news guy is the one that's outdated on that show. Sounds so great for a news guy...and he is quick witted but SO dry...belongs on an AM station......I understand that he's been their the whole time but come on.... How can this be a hip indie station with your dad working there....ON air!!?

Plenty of hip indie dads listen to WFNX.
