wfnx: 4th morning show this year.

Not sure if Tai wants to go back to FT mornings. But he was a great morning host and probably the last one who stuck around more than a year or two. It seems like every PD they get tries to make their mark on the morning show by blowing up the previous PD's project and installing their own friends/proteges in the slot.

My guess is that Driscoll is another interim thing until they find the next sacrificial lamb.

Paul Driscoll is on again in AM drive? They s*#%canned "No Name" already??

Who hired him in the first place? One listen to this guy's aircheck tells me that voice coming out of my radio at 7:15am is like sandpaper on my eardrums.

And who didn't teach him how to operate the equipment? I know plenty of college kids that could do wayyy better than Mr. No Name.

Apparently this guy had somewhat of a following in Seattle on KNDD. I guess the west coast is very different?!

He sounded like a complete rank amateur to me. Like they grabbed some goof off the sidewalk and said "Hey, wanna be on the radio?"

Henry is on vacation until the 3rd. He's the *show*, ya know.

Alternative: The choice between two mutually exclusive possibilities.

Music? 14 songs per hour on morning/afternoon shows with the Alt; vs 4 (or less) tunes per hour from everybody else.

News, talk and info? A good Alt jock can relay all the pertinent items, slip in a couple of funny bits, STFU and play the next tune in less than 90 seconds. Everyone else is still trying to fluff their morning show bits 90 minutes later.

Commercial integration. 10+ minute stop sets? On a music intensive Alt? They seem to work OK with garden variety morning shows but destroy the continuity and mood of music based programming. The best example I can currently think of is the 10/15/63 Murray the K aircheck that the Dentist played on his Rewound site a few Saturdays back. Full slate of commercials, 3+ minutes of news per hour, promos, PSAs, contests and an ample number of his radio bits. At the end of his show he added up the number of tunes he played on the 3 1/2 hour show and they averaged 18 to 19 songs per hour! Don't go thinking "jukebox" either because only once or possibly twice per show he'd feature a "triple ripple" -- which was 3 songs in a row without commercial interruption.

PC and Mac have their own unique methods of computing. They are not interchangable. Music intensive vis-a-vis other formats also requires a different business model. Best proof is WBCN-WBOS. WBCN was the superior station (by far) in almost every aspect. Early '09, perennial 1.5 ratings AAA WBOS decided to aim for a younger audience. WBOS basically ran the same song selections as WBCN. WBCN maintained it's basic block programming consisting of personality driven morning and afternoon shows with Alt rock in the other slots. WBOS featured the same music as WBCN. WBOS presented an automated, VT'd and extremely music intensive delivery. 6 months later WBCN succumbed to months of 1.9 ratings as WBOS soared to steady 4+ ratings. WFNX has an audience of loyal P1s. WFNX has musical integrity and credibility; where WBOS is spreading itself too thin musically and is in danger of some serious competition.

No Name is a cool handle for an Alt guy, same for D Tension. It doesn't matter who hosts the mornings on WFNX as long as they play lots of new tunes!

I may be wrong because I am sick, but if it doesn't matter then why did they fire the guy after 2 weeks? I didn't hear D Tension or Jim Ryan but they have got to be better than No Name. I say with a .8 and no sign of improvement, just pick a part timer to grow in the role. No Name wasn't local and I think that being local matters in this market. Mix that with the fact that he was terrible and it makes you wonder what the decision making progress is at wfnx.

I do agree that it should be music and more music in the morning.

Well Slappy music and more music it is. I was just one the WFNX Radio Facebook and fans are complaining that D-Tension is gone again. The past two days were just music and sweepers. A good point was made that a jockless show is no different than WBOS, except WBOS has a better signal. I don't see how this is solid plan for FNX.

Also worth noting that in order to prevent their facebook from being bombarded with complaints like it was when they put DJ W No Name on the air, they have disabled the comment posting option on their Facebook. The fans will love that! "Don't talk to us it's FNX" LOL

I just checked, they still allow commenting on their fan page?

D is a friend of a friend. From what I've heard, he was "let go." No other details. I caught Santoro doing a break this morning, and he pre-sold a Strokes song. I bet you they are just going to run automated for now, with Santoro's news breaks sprinkled in here and there.

You can comment on something FNX posts but you can't post your own comment. There are some "we want D" comments but they're in an unrelated topic.

I know D but haven't spoken to him since I worked there. I sent him a message today but he didn't get back to me as of yet.

All due respect to Henry Santoro but they can't just have him by himself. It sounded awkward as hell.

I'd rather Santoro by himself over No Name.

Yes, Henry Santoro should do very well since he's been a part of every morning show for as long as I can remember.

Was anyone listening to "My Song is Better than Your Song" this morning? The mayor of Somerville kept mentioning D-Tension.

LOL. Even the Mayor knows they messed up. They deleted my comment on their Facebook this morning. It was up for 2 minutes. Can't delete the Mayor.

I worked with No Name at KNDD & KQBZ in Seattle and he was a rock solid jock, never seemed to have issues with the board there at all but perhaps his producer - Timberlake was running the board at the time I don't know as I was not in the office during morning or I was up one floor on the morning show on KQBZ but NEVER heard that there were serious board issues on "The Morning Alternative".
I don't know what happened, I wrote to Paul Driscoll directly but never heard back from him about what happened, Henry was mum on it too, No Name admitted there were issues board wise but from what I've been told they weren't that egregious though if you are going to be in a studio with a board you're unfamiliar with you should try to carve out some time to get to know it or at least the basics of it.
The sad part about all this is that No Name is a talented guy who was more than a "record announcer" and he has a great deal of creativity that he could have brought to FNX but for some reason things didn't work out.

I'd like to think that No Name's mentality at the time was, "I've done this a million times before, I don't need any training. I'll show up five minutes before my shift begins and mail it in." Having never been in the FNX studio before, I can't say I know exactly how their equipment works. If it were me, I'd make it a point to go in the Sunday before my first on-air shift (assuming it's on a Monday) and get a crash course on how that specific station's equipment works.

Does anyone have any airchecks of this guy out west? What I heard on FNX was worse than most college stations. I didn't hear any creativity, or any personality that I wanted to listen to. I heard what amounted to a moron behind the mic. And that assessment is leaving the board issues out of the loop.

Also, if you're that much of a pro, most studios are roughly the same. Mics on the left, CD/Phones etc. in the middle and automation on the right. It ain't rocket science.
