WFNX being sold to Clear Channel

@Joseph, It was pointed out to me by NHRadio that the signal for 1430 am would not be too good for Spanish sports at night especially in the North Shore where there is a large Spanish population.

With the money that CC is willing to spend, I wonder if they would spend a lot of money and switch frequencies with WWZN 1510 and put Spanish sports there.

But I really think that Mia is going to 101.7, although the Nashua NH station Frank FM beat the Great WGBH in the ratings. (Love it). ;D

Mia might go to FM, but the local Spanish broadcasters aren't worried. You walk into a bodega, no one has Mia on the radio. You will wear Power 800 or Mega 890. Even if Mia is FM, the other stations are local. Makes a difference.

If WFNX is leaving the airwaves at 7pm tomorrow as I've been reading...
My understanding is that 7PM tomorrow is just the end of the last FNX live show, and that the handoff to CC is later (12:00AM Sunday?). In between is automation, but it's still FNX.

Two things: First, the audio processing was tweaked several months ago so it wasn't as heavily compressed as it had been for a number of years. And second, I've been hearing constant promotions for an "urban music festival" at City Hall Plaza for sometime in August. Is this a hint at what's to come for 101.7?

I think I'd take Mindich's "Corporate Radio" bitch at the end a little more seriously if he hadn't sold to the largest corporate broadcaster in the world.

If you had something that would give you $14.5 million reasons to sell it, I'll bet you would too.

The station was hemorrhaging money for the past few years. Corporate or not, they were the ones who offered enough cash for him to say "to Hell with it" and stop the bleeding. Unfortunately, people lost their jobs in the process. That's the sad and human part of the story.

Neither of those have any bearing on what will be at 101.7. CC is not in control of the station yet, so any ad buys were made with Phoenix. Plus, they're not going to set up the audio processing for the next owner. That's like setting the table for dinner and then selling your house.

The festival spot is WFNX's PSA created for Menino's office. Not a station promotion.

They had Mia on when I walked into the convenience store/sub shop by the Gulf gas station at Logan Airport once a couple of years ago. From the Revere Beach Parkway transmitter site, the 1430 signal blasts into the airport/East Boston area day and night.

And I assume it would not be too out of place to say that back in the good old days before Craigslist, the Phoenix's want ads were paying for FNX. That's what hurt alt-weeklies the most. Combine that with a hard-to-sell format like modern rock and it's not surprising that Mindich had to do what he had to do--and that he seems to think that the paper has a better chance of staying alive than the radio station.

I think what he really thought was he could get more money for the radio station. I can't imagine that the paper is worth very much.

Last song was just played, to continue with dead air, just heard an ID, and now they're playing another song. What's this supposed to be? A stunt?

I realize that CC can't stunt or otherwise promote what's coming on 101.7 until it actally owns the station, but what's keeping them from launching a "teaser" advertising campaign via billboards, internet or print? The absolute vacuum of publicity surrounding the launch of a new format on a Boston station is absolutely weird. What sort of format could CC be launching that they won't bother generating an ounce of buzz or hype for? Leased ethnic? Paid religion? Second-tier right-wing talk?

They are playing automated music all weekend until they officially change hands to CC Monday.

I realize that with the start of a new business week, a transfer of control at 12:00 a.m. on Monday makes a lot of sense. But has anyone seen the Monday date given officially from either Clear Channel or The Phoenix? 7 p.m. is a weird time for a sign-off… and all of the DJ talk I heard today on 101.7 FM was very vague on when the 'FNX music will come to a close. For it's part, 'FNX is done with 101.7 FM. Kind of makes you kind of wonder if a transfer of control will happen sooner rather than later.

They are awaiting official transfer approval from the FCC, I hear. I know it's already approved, but bureaucracy. Or something like that.

What format would go with the call letters WHBA? "The Harbor" "The Bay"? Soft AC?

I have been involved in several of these things and sooner rather than later is something that both parties want. Personally I am amazed that the new format (or at least some stunting) didn't begin immediately. If anything they could have hammered out a short term LMA that would have allowed Clear Channel to take control of the programming right away.
