WFNX ratings down, again

The ratings decline continues at WFNX:

12+ ratings:

12+...please. How is the station doing in the demo?

Ummm....18-34 in 16th place...one of their lowest showings in years.

This is after adding the Sandbox and moving their stick.

mistermicrophone said:
How is the simulacast doing to help increase the bottom line?

All indications are it is not doing much...

mistermicrophone said:
I know you want to make this a "their 12+ ratings suck, flip the format" post, but the fact is, success is NOT based on 12+ numbers.

Well, what would you base it on?

Any demo you pick they are failing.

But Mindich is known to be stubborn.

Spilot113, you say WBOS has put no effort into their programming. Im not sure that is true. The format is supposed to sound effortless but Im sure they are doing a great deal of perceptual research as well as auditorium tests and traditional call out. The only way that format will work is if they research it to death. (like WRFF in Philly does).

Also they seem to be spending plenty of money. You must not drive around all that much but they have at least 10 huge billboards throughout the city. "Radio 929. Less blah blah blah" is the tagline. A clear shot at the WBCN morning/afternoon shows.

As far as WFNX in the 18-34 demo. They were 16th in the Winter. 7th in the Fall and 12th in the summer. Not bad out of the 35 stations rated in the metro. Im sure they are making money.

(btw, like most of the rock stations in this town I'm sure FNX cares about 18-49 over 18-34)

Also, did anyone notice the adjustments at WBCN? No Roadsteamer. Way more gold. Return of more classic rock.

Nope!

Bupkis!

Did someone say lack of effort?

Spending money on billboards is not much of an effort.

the 35 stations in the market include WEZE WESX and WRCA, WKOX....To say they are doing pretty well in a market of 35 stations a farce.

Is their competition really WJiB? (Which does pretty well btw...)

AMost every station makes money. That's not the point.

The question is (as someone else pointed out) are they making enough money.

Enough money to substantiate the asset...or to substantiate their jobs.

The answer is no...

Wrong!

No!

Hardly...

Never!

You will have to excuse me but I went to the K321 School of Answering Posts Without Saying Anything Substantial.

It seems Keith321 has a ton of insight into what goes on over at BOS. I am sure they are a company that will just throw the switch and roll the dice without any sort of plan. Your statements would seem to back this up.

Can you tell me if they are hiring? Someone who doesn't work for my company told me that we are going under...

Ive got to agree with FNXEd here.

There is NO WAY that WBOS switched formats without a plan. Research was done. Auditorium tests were held. So unless K321 is Dana Marshall or Buzz Knight, it is likely he would have no idea what really happened.

And obviously you haven't looked into the price of billboards lately. Putting up billboards is a costly venture and I would say that marketing that station is putting in an effort.

They're trying too hard to compete with AAF and BCN like in the early 2000's when they did Storm And Birdsey... Stick with an indie playlist and don't mix in RHCP, and get rid of the toucher and rich wannabees in the morning.

I'm sure that WBOS put as much research into making a format change as WFNX did hiring it's morning show. Both decisions sound good occasionally. As for pricing out billboards, here are a couple of thoughts. When the campaign is good or makes sense they tend to be less expensive (that's not really true.) However if you had a company that buys billboards for multiple stations as a opposed to a station buying for one, it could be cheaper. Therefore making it a relatively cheap campaign for WBOS. I'm not sure which side I'm on here, but love to encourage the SHENANAGANS. With that, somebody SUCKS!

Nice attempt to bait me on that one tomorrowor but you just registered so I don't buy it.

I don't think the "Sandbox" sounds like anything even remotely close to "Toucher And Rich". The billboards for the "Sandbox" lead me to beleive that they are targeting a female demo because they say something like "We like to gossip" or something and have a goofy looking dude with bad EMO glasses. I am not trying to offend or attack anyone but I would feel ambarrased to tell anyone that I listened to this show (if I did) with those billboards being most peoples first impressions of the show. I would not have gone in that direction, but what do I know?????

Seeing as NSPUNX is a big T&R fan I think he is the authority when it comes to comparisons. Thank you for backing me up.

As far as the billboards go NSP is a bit off. I don't think we are intentionally going for a female audience. Although, the idea behind The Sandbox is that everyone is welcome regardless of gender, race, religion, taste in music and whatnot. There are actually 3 billboards up currently. Each one has picture of either Charlie, Fletcher or Ed and a quick line that reads "Smart, funny and _____". The blank is filled by an adjective that applies to each member of the show. Fletcher's does say "gossipy". This is because he handles the "Pop Trash" segment in which he runs down all the Hollywood BS. Charlie's reads "bald" because he is and mine says "special' because, well, that's my name.

Fletcher is the "goofy looking dude with bad EMO glasses" that you mentioned. Not sure why his appearance on a billboard would make you embarrassed to listen. Radio DJs are notorious when it comes to fashion faux pas. Just so you know, he isn't wearing the classic (and clichéd) Hawaiian shirt.

A few word of advice, words can hurt.

As long as they got your attention the billboards did their job. Hopefully when people see the boards they tune in. Then it is our job to get them to keep listening.

Could we have gone with a picture of all 3 of us hanging with bikini-clad babes? Yes. But that's not us.

Hahaha. Gives new meaning to the term "a good face for radio" right Ed? I don't think picking on Fletcher's glasses is even remotely relevant to the argument. Ed's right- you probably WOULD tune in if you saw the Billboard, it got your attention, therefore it did it's job. [EDIT]

Thank You!

I just have a personal hate for those "emo" glasses. I dunno it did catch my attention and I did give the show a listen before but after about ten minutes I had to put O and A back on. I am not trying to knock you everyone has thier own taste and I am not trying to say its a bad show. It isnt. It's just not my type of show. I would like to say that I think it's great that you take the time to post here I really do. I have sent fred toucher links to threads here before so he knows it exists but doesnt post here.

I beg to differ. I'm quite stylish.

Perhaps in my own mind.
Have not seen these billboards you speak of.

Look at their history. Have the ever had a plan?

They did, it was to save money with less jocks.
