If you want to blame the signal, just flash back to KMPC-FM, later called "The Edge." This was a AAA-ish venture on 101.9 with JJ Jackson at the helm. All you heard about from them was how they couldn't get ratings because of their signal.
When the station went to a Spanish language format, though, they suddenly shot up to the top of the ratings. So much for the signal theory....
Scooty, the short-lived (fall 1987-May 1989) KMPC-FM/The Edge was one of my all-time favorite radio stations. I remember they had a listener response question: Not enough Bruce, Too much Bruce, or just enough Bruce. Aren't many stations these days like that (if any!)
But I have to correct you... Remember they became K-Light (KLIT) from May '89-July 1, 1994 before thay became FM 101.9 later KSCA LA's Finest Rock. THEN they went Spanish in Feb '97. Nicole and Co at KSCA were the ones complaining about the ratings as related to the signal. As for KMPC-FM, JJ Jackson along with Jim Ladd and Rachael Donohue knew they weren't going to pull any ratings above a 1 share.
