What now for 103.9?

They need to move it to a stronger signal or expand its signal or put in translators because most of the NYC Market especially Northern Passaic County, South Bergen, Morris, Somerset, etc can't hear the signal where most of their listeners will be.

The new signal will be strongest in the Bronx,northern Manhattan and parts of Queens. That sounds more dance friendly territory than Rock.But I can't imagine Cumulus wanting to do a dance format.

They would need to somehow get it to a stronger signal or something because they won't get a lot of listeners especially in Northern Passaic & Morris because of 103.7 WNNJ.

I kinda guessed it. Why have WRXP, which is the alternative call letter equivalent to what the WKTU call letters mean to dance fans and put it as country? But for 103.9? Makes sense.

I know I brought this up on the 110+ page thread :)

I've done what research I could online but I can't come up with the answer to this one... how far along is Cumulus in their move of 103.9 to the Bronx? I'm on the north shore of LI and WFUV comes in well - would 103.9 be similar?

But unfortunately, the signal would still cover Westchester/Rockland and those aren't as dance friendly since the northern suburbs are mainly associated as "sleepy, eat and get home to bed after the commute from Metro-North" towns. Though White Plains is starting to pick up on the nightlife. Stamford, CT has a pretty impressive one already :)

AFAIK, the 103.9 Bronx site is built, tested and ready to go. Cumulus just needs to file for a license to cover and flip the switch.

WRXP means nothing to rock fans. Those calls are associated with a station that bungled the format for most of its short life. RXP 2.0 was a filler format for the sale of 101.9

They aren't WNEW, WBCN or WMMR level calls in the least.

I think it was just Cumulus NYC having some fun getting the message boards going by changing to WRXP.

Even if 103.9's signal will not reach all the parts of the NYC Metro where alternative/modern rock is popular, I could see the station doing considerably better with rock than it does now as one of many A/C stations in the area . Their most recent overall numbers in the Hudson Valley ratings were very low, and sharply down from a few quarters ago.
And with regard to the WRXP calls, they may not have the status to rock fans of WNEW, but clearly Cumulus feels they have some value (at no real cost) for 103.9. That is evidently why they are still on 94.7, rather than WNSH. Apparently WFAS may soon go rock and get the 'RXP call. Then 94.7 can be WNSH.

I already get alternative on 103.9 here in Monmouth County, NJ...'cause that's what my C. Crane FM transmitter is tuned to...

(Translation: 103.9 won't get commercial alternative down to the shore. 103.9 isn't here. Maybe from the Bronx it might make it, but I doubt it.)

They would have an extremely limited signal as it is. I guess its better than nothing...They should have put this on 94.7 rather than country. Maybe they could buy 103.7 WNNJ from CC? What other options does Cumulus have to make this a full market signal without swapping signals with anyone? They could swap this signal with 99.5 from Pacifica and they would get 103.9 or 93.9 swap with them while moving 103.9 into the city.

103.9 does cover Bergen County pretty good when that pirate from Newark isn't on (usually doesn't make it south of Paramus with the pirate on)......Today I was able to pickup 103.9 fine in Lyndhurst and in the past I have been able to get it on the NJ Turnpike past Newark Airport from their current tower location...Moving the signal to the Bronx will only increase coverage in these areas.

However, 103.9 does suffer to the west as the hills block out the station pretty quickly.....I know in parts of Wayne and Pompton Lakes its very dfficult to get 103.9.....I always thought 103.9 broadcasting from the Bronx would go nicely simulcasting with 99.1 Zarephath, NJ but I don't see WAWZ ever getting sold.

And BTW did anyone notice that RXP is already on 103.9 with an Alt Rock format? (103.9 KRXP Pueblo West, Colorado "The Alternative - RXP @ 103-9"

Ive been listening to that station on my internet radio ever since ny's RXP went off the air the first time. It's a great station actually and hearing the calls just makes me happy :) I loved RXP and I would be thrilled if it came back... Even more so if they hired Matt Pinfield...

103.9 isn't getting any better than moving to the Bronx. I bet the EDM fans would kill to have their music on that stick if rock fans aren't satisfied!!
