What would you like to hear from radio?

OK, I was referring to my own personal experience participating in one of the public survey/focus groups a few years ago held by a research company based out of the east side. This sampling of people was a joke, and in talking with the other participants they were not taking the survey seriously at all. It was only a way for them to collect $75 and eat some free food. I am sure this is only one ingredient in the recipe for screwing up the programming at a radio station, but the sooner you guys and gals stop paying those idiotic consultants and research groups to tell you what to play the better it will be for all of us. Or just stop playing music altogether and follow the example of TV and air paid infomercials incessantly. What you are doing now isn't much better than that anyway and is almost as painful.

And there you have it folks, this is the basis of why consultants and research (which by the way are two separate things entirely) are bad for radio.

Attending a focus group and the polling of some friends in Skagit County. THOSE are the two reference sources as to how some people on this board know exactly what's going on in radio today.

And people like you are the reason radio is losing listeners to ipods and satellites!

7) AQH plays an interesting card but sadly, a familiar one. It's similar to what tubs of goo like Limbaugh or Dori do. If they decide (rarely) to let someone on who disagrees with them, they know the caller is nervous and the caller is invading the host's space. And they dismantle them. If grindlfan were to post "I read where scientists think global warming is real" the passive-aggressive personality will respond "Oh, really? That's unsettling news. Please give us your sources." And it always ends with a cheery "thanks!" which translates to: screw you. Now if you were to come back with "The article I read is in the January '09 issue of Scientific American by a Pulitzer Prize winning researcher" that will do no good. The host is ready with ten scientists who disagree. So what AQH really wants is an argument and a chance to embarrass grindlfan. There is no way AQH will EVER post: "Gee, I read that article and it got me to thinking. Maybe you're correct." The day you hear Dori or Rush or Hannity or any other gas bag say a similar statement will be the day Lucifer straps on his skates.

I merely asked to cite an example, nothing else. There was no alternate motive, and there are no black helicopters flying around.

If someone can not handle being challenged or being held accountable for what they declare as being the gospel, they don't say something so stupid.

Is it really that difficult to understand?

With those 3,000,000 listeners - counting us - no radio station will ever please any random group of ten, let alone this board. So no offense meant at all but this topic is a circular argument that will never change anything so ... why bother?
So The End is doing this thing... what would you do as President of the End, and taking/posting suggestions on their website. Is this just a stunt, or do you think they're tying to poll their actual listeners?

Just curious

Oh, thanks for telling me! I barely listen to that station anymore, used to be a regular. I want to tell them what I think of their banal talk shows!

What kind of stuff is The End playing these days? I remember the days when cutting edge music was Nirvana and Pearl Jam, and The End was the place on the dial to turn for that. I don't know what's considered cutting edge now. Are they still playing Green Day and Coldplay? I listened to the Mountain when they first went on the air, but only occasionally tune it in now.

AQH - I understand. As long as not every single statement is challenged. A brash claim probably needs to be challenged. I'm just stating a generality I've found to be true. Once it gets into a "prove it" argument, the discussion is generally over. Years ago (before even MY time) I think public discourse was an art and minds were changed. We've gradually changed into a combative society where arguments and confrontations are not to persuade but to vent, to rage and even threaten. I've never once heard a talk show guy say "Oh, really? Why do you believe that way? Educate me" and really mean it. It doesn't make for the cheap drama talk radio and TV needs.

As for the T-shirt survey - there is merit to that. If you're an astute programmer, there are times you don't need a $50,000 survey to tell you that your butt is being beat like a rug.

At one station I worked, we were attacked by an upstart. It was back in the days when there were truly epic radio wars. We were sponsoring a big concert with big names in a sold out venue. We were stationed outside with the van, some giveaways, doing the typical (yawn) live thing. In the crush, I never noticed a small, unmarked army of kids giving stuff away to folks as they entered the concert hall. So there I am, feeling pretty good about my bad self. The lights go down and I quickly realize what those kids were giving away. Thousands and thousands of glow sticks with not only our competitors calls on them, but they glowed in the bluish color of the artwork they used in their billboards, T-shirts, etc. They knew that WE'D know exactly what was going on and they were correct. It was a sea of blue. It ruined the night for me. I didn't need anything else to tell me we were at least in for a struggle and maybe a battle.

Just an observation from a guy who's been this for awhile now.

Almost forgot ... I need to work on the use of the widgets here. For some reason I didn't turn off the bold and italics. A stylistic faux paus. Er, paux.

Oh, excuse me. I never meant to sound like I felt my opinions in my posting are gospel. I guess I should have prefaced it with...IMHO. Gee AQH, you sure are hyper sensetive to the opinions of a disenchanted radio listener. Is there the slightest possiblitly that you might actually care what real listeners think? Hey, hows about you and Guru disclosing who you are and what you do? Maybe that would add credibiltiy to your postings. Are you even working? You seem to be very active on this site for someone with a full time gig. As for me, I am a civilian factory worker who formerly loved radio and hope to once again. I post when I have time.

I don't really listen to The End enough anymore to speak to any particular artists or bands they play, though when I do tune in they still play alot of what was popular in the 90's, like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Green Day, Stone Temple Pilots, Allison Chains, Soundgarden, REM, Presidents of the USA, as well as the 80's music they play too. I haven't listened near as much since probably 2005. There were some new bands coming out at the time, The Killers, Franz Ferdinand, Snow Patrol, Jet, and Modest Mouse, who had actually been around since the mid 90's but only started getting popular around '03 or something. I still generally like alot of End music, but their egotistical dj's who talk to much are boring. Might be interesting if they would talk about music. I never listened much to the Mountain. I like some of their music, but other times it's a little too mellow, I think they are trying to sound like background music for people sippin' lattes at Starbucks!

Speaking of the End, Marco Collins myspace page hints of a possible return to Seattle. I'm assuming he is referring to KNDD. Does this mean other End alum may follow?

Marco was on KEXP this week, where he should be.
The first 100 days stunt on thee End is just that, they've never listened to their audience, hence
the fall.Speaking of t-shirts,when was the last time you saw someone wearing an end tee or even a sticker
on their 'pimped out' ride? ::).Are they still doing the 'personality dee jay' schtick?

Hats off to you brother. Maybe KHIT at it's WORST is better than radio today, It was indeed ridiculous, but in the end, in comparison to THESE so-called developments in CORPORATE radio, classic KHIT would sound pretty damn good right now.

And I've STILL (since 1998) won this battle on this board. I did not have to say anything. TIME ITSELF would prove me RIGHT. And it always has.

So just don't say I didn't tell you so.................

Are you just coming around to realizing what you said in the last sentence? Of course I'm interested.

When I challenge people on their beliefs and get personal attacks in return, what else can you say? Do I try to aggravate people intentionally? Of course not. But people tend to get angry at me because, just as someone said earlier in this thread that you can't prove a negative. Plus, I tend to bring a more real-life approach into what goes on in radio. One of the biggest chuckles I get is when I read is the reasoning for stations to change format. Many people think that it's a matter of calling up TM Studios (formerly TM Century) and order up a gold library and you're set for the format change. It's just not that way. And when I mention that, that's when some people start attacking me. And that's perfectly fine with me, because first and foremost, this is just an internet discussion board, that's all. Nothing more and nothing else. Some people, whether it's through multiple identities (which are very easy to detect) or frequency of posting, or frequency of a specific topic, take this board WAY too seriously, on a level I would cringe to even think of.

This site is usually one of the places I check out in the morning, but not every morning, as sometimes kids get sick (or pretend to be sick) before going to school.

I admit, I do read this board quite a bit, a lot more than actually posting. Reading some posts by some people is like what people say about car wrecks, you don't want to admit doing it, but you do anyway. Another reason is because I know others who read this board (it was one who turned me on to this site). Having conversations with some known people in the business, let's just say repeating what one said specifically about a couple people here would get me in trouble with the Board Editors here.

And about my identity? Maybe in the future. But right now, I'll have to issue a rain check.

Yep! I was just being funny, wondering if radioproaqhguru would catch on. Probably went right over his head!

Somewhere in the world there is girl named Alison Chains ;D or maybe Pearl Jam (does anyone name their daughters "Pearl" anymore?). Back in my record store days, people used to ask me where certain artists were filed. "I looked under T for Tull, but couldn't find any. I looked under S for Skynyrd, no luck there either." And my favorite..."how come you don't have any Led Zeppelin in the Z's?" ???

Garth Brooks named his daughter Pearl. His daughter with his first wife that is.

No, it wasn't a typo. I was just trying to be funny. Maybe that was seen as disrespectful since Layne Staley is dead. I didn't mean no harm by it!
