What's happening at live???

Why is Live 105 playing hip-hop? The top 10 on their yes.com page shows Eminem "Not Afraid". I also saw them play Mike Posner "Cooler Than Me" last night. Very weird to see an alternative station play those songs.

Hip hop is today's modern rock.

The modern rock format is 20 years ago. Justin Bieber wasn't even born yet. What made KITS work with the modern rock format was several things: (1) a mass audience, (2) support of the music by club DJs, (3) the hip factor.

Today's KITS is KSOL, KMEL and KMKY (Radio Disney). Don't look now, but KSOL is the #1 music station after KOIT.

What's your beef with modern rock that you can't handle it being a viable format? Just because Alternative isn't the #1-rated music format in San Francisco doesn't mean that it's dead everywhere. Houston's Alternative station is top 5 6+, San Diego has two Alternative stations that bring in over a 5-share combined 6+, and L.A. has two Alternative stations that have almost a 7-share combined 6+. And I guarantee you that KROQ has a much better brand recognition than KSOL.

The music is still hip, and if it wasn't, it wouldn't be used in such mass-appeal ways other than radio: Neon Trees' "Animal" is the music used in a several-month-long TV ad campaign for Las Vegas, and the song is so successful at Alternative and in these ads that they're finally crossing it to Top 40. Muse's "Uprising" has been used in tons of TV and movie ads, including ABC-TV's "V" and that new "Knight and Day" movie with Tom Cruise. The soundtrack to what will undoubtedly be one of the biggest movies of the year ("Twilight: Eclipse") is filled with modern rock artists like Metric, The Bravery, Muse, The Black Keys, Vampire Weekend, Band of Horses and The Dead Weather.

You also need to expand your definition of what the format can include. From its inception, Alternative became an inclusive format rather than an exclusive one -- where else could you hear modern rock from Pearl Jam alongside electronica from The Chemical Brothers or swing music by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy? When the format first got started, hip-hop was included on several Alternative stations' playlists, with artists like De La Soul getting a fair amount of airplay. That definition continues today, where the format plays everything from punk (Against Me and Rise Against) to reggae (Dirty Heads -- currently #1) to singer-songwriter material (Jack Johnson) to bluegrass (Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros) to hard rock (Disturbed).

Another big reason for changes is the upcoming football broadcasts. With the large influx of new listeners that will bring, it makes sense that they'll want to broaden their appeal to hook some of them. Adding some Hip Hop one one end of the spectrum and some ACDC/Metallica/Zeppelin/GNR on the other end seems like a sensible thing to do.

By the way, looking at cume, KSOL isn't even in the top 10 as far as how many people are listening in the Bay Area. Wild is the second-most-listened-to station in San Francisco with more than twice as many listeners as KSOL. Even Live 105 has more listeners than KSOL.

And as far as Radio Disney goes... well, they're not even showing up in the San Francisco ratings, so I have no idea how you think they're representative of listening trends when stations from Sacramento are registering more listeners in the Bay Area than Radio Disney is.

KROQ has been getting crushed in the ratings lately...

I said that KROQ has better brand recognition than KSOL, I wasn't talking about ratings. It's still one of the top five billing stations in the country, and it can pull in those kinds of numbers because of the reputation it has. Whatever the ratings are, KROQ still has a very recognizable name. So does Indie 103, which has been off the air for a year and a half but is still talked about. The station barely pulled a 1-share (and was somewhere around a 0.3 when it finally flipped), but it still got national attention to the point of Rolling Stone calling it the "coolest station in America."

I was in Hawaii a couple of years ago and was wearing a KROQ t-shirt one day, and one of the locals at the restaurant I was in asked me if I was from L.A. When I asked him how he knew, he said it was because of the KROQ shirt. I doubt you'd get a similar reaction from wearing a KSOL shirt outside of San Francisco.

I'm not so sure about that. I think the Spanish language brand "Estereo Sol" and the stylized sun logo originated at KSOL because of the call letters, but I've seen it on billboards and T shirts in other cities, usually as "El Sol.", or "El Zol." So it has spread to other markets.

Univision has three brands they use across the country,Estero Sol(Regional Mexican),La Kalle(Spanish CHR),and Recurdo(Spanish Adult Hits). They might have one more they use for Spanish AC and maybe one for Spanish Talk(Maybe Radio Informativa but I think that may just be a local brand)I'm sure I spelled most of those wrong.Anyway, back to Live, I think they should make 99.7 KFRC Classic Hits and move CHR to 105.3,getting rid of Live.

They should make it a Alternative/Active Rock hybrid since theres no Active Rock Stations in the Bay Area, well KSAN is sort of ,but they are more of a Classic Rock station.

Actually, high billing with low ratings could last for quite awhile...just look at every AM station you could think of.

Hip hop is today's modern rock.

Actually, Hip Hop has seen an inexorable decline in album sales since 2005.

I recall that WBCN in Boston added Patriots football in 2000 in order to increase the ratings overall at the station because BCN wasn't doing so hot with it's format. This might be a sign that CBS is trying to get people to listen. I think that San Francisco's eclectic tastes would call for more indie rock on the station, especially because a lot of people on the Jelli blocks mainly request indie rock.

The complaint about modern rock is the same as the complaint about top 40 20 years earlier: those formats worked because they were current, but now they're not current. Now those formats would appeal only to people who are into nostalgia.

Just because Alternative isn't the #1-rated music format in San Francisco doesn't mean that it's dead everywhere. Houston's Alternative station is top 5 6+, San Diego has two Alternative stations [....]

DAMN how I hate the term "alternative". I happen to have a database of every top 100 hit song for the past 110 years. Many of the songs of the past 10 to 20 years are labelled "alternative", but if they're so damned alternative, why is that one of the biggest categories? Obviously such music is not alternative at all.

What are you talking about? Top 40 is primarily a current-based format -- always has been, always will be. It's how the format was designed to be.

Interesting thing about your database -- the Top 100 chart is only around 55 years old, so I wonder where those extra years of yours came from. Maybe the same place where Top 40 isn't current?

They may not be encoding. Remember, the whole idea behind Radio Disney is to promote other Disney products. I doubt if they care at all about ratings.
