Whats this market missing?

So the ratings are down all over the market, and it makes me wonder what is this market missing? What format do you guys see dominating the market in the next year? Also who's the best morning show in this market? Interested in hearing the responses!

If it were me, I would launch a mainstream Rock station to compete with Active Rock KOMP. If they got on the "mainstream rock" panel at mediabase or billboard music charts, they would be the only station in Vegas on that particular panel - and will in turn get label support. And with the kind of numbers KOMP is putting up these days puts a very large target on their back. In addition, KXTE is so pop style alternative (killers, Green Day, Linkin Park, Black Keys, etc) these days compared to their more hard rock approach a few years back... leaving a large lane for another rock station. It's amazing to see how many songs and artists KOMP has all to themselves right now, nearly every current on their playlist.

As far as AM shows, the best in the market are:
1: Mark and Mercedes (KMXB)
2: Mike, Jim and Carla (KKLZ)
3: KOMP Morning Show
4: Gonzo on BOB-FM, they don't let him talk much but when he does it's brilliant and funny
5: Foxx and MacKenzie (Point)

I love this topic. To add to it, what stations do you think has the best imaging? Who are some of the best PDs in Vegas?

Las Vegas should do what XM does, have a comedy station, but just one.

If the sales managers want to make money on the idea, then they could use some of the bits from comedians already performing in Las Vegas and have the hotel sponsor their "recorded bit" that is used with a liner on where they currently perform. Friday traffic from LA would hopefully tune in and consider seeing performances that weekend.

Fill in the rest with bits from well known comedians. Could hit a nice size audience wanting a break from politics.

Being the entertainment capital of the world, and XM having success with comedy stations, one could do well in this market if done correctly.

The "ratings" are not down because what is published on various sites is share, and there will always be 100 share points.

Market level PUR is no different than it was 8 months ago.

radiopunk, with the possible exception of Gonzo, none of those morning shows is doing anything that hasn't been done 1,000 times over, even locally. Since more people than ever can listen to major-market radio now without ever turning on a radio, you'd think market #32 would have a lot more to offer, especially in mornings.

This market needs a station that will give traffic reports 24-7. Unless it is Monday thru Friday 6 AM - 7 PM, you'd think there are no accidents, slow downs or lane closures. It just ain't so, folks!

I respectfully disagree. This ain't LA. I don't believe that Las Vegas is bad enough to require traffic reports outside of drive time.

Even in SF Traffic reports 24/7 are a waste.....It gets pretty quiet there late at night. Jody Applegate, TV anchor once did traffic ffor Metro in SF. At a party once she lampooned a late night traffic report: "....and there's a paper clip on northbound 101 at Candlestick".

Organizer, I would love to hear your examples of shows outside of Vegas or inside Vegas that is doing something so unique or creative that is worth mention

Sorry everyone, I lost my connection although it still posted my half typed post..

Again, Organizer, I would love to hear your examples of shows outside of Vegas or inside Vegas that are doing something so unique or creative that is worth mentioning on this board. As I keep mentioning, I think it's funny how people keep saying how much Vegas radio sucks. But I keep trying to find content superior than Vegas by listening to streams from across the country and XM but have not come across something that beats the live and local content we have in Vegas. Please enlighten me Organizer. I really wanna hear this stuff.

What about a 1950's early 60's station playing Doo Wop, r&b vocal groups and rockabilly. Don't anyone say it wouldn't work, why would the Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly weekend sellout every year, because people love the music. Corporate radio killed radio.

Good point about Rockabilly. I have never personally attended the rockabilly events in Vegas, like the big one at the Orleans. But I've heard it's massive. Although, it's a lot of tourists. I'm not sure there are enough people in Vegas to support a radio station. I do agree that Corporations have seriously harmed the content on radio. Another thing that decreased the amount of unique content is the arbitron PPM methodology. PPM can be credited for killing off smooth jazz and other stations around the Country not considered "mass appeal" enough. That's why we have 4 Top 40 stations in Vegas. Remember when Vegas had NO top 40 at all??? KLUC was the closest thing to a top 40 but they were leaning so rhythmic back then.

As much as I love Doo op, R&B and Rockabilly It wouldn't fly....Even though music fesivals attact a big crowd from everywhere it's doubtful it would get a local audience and the demos would be too old.

Tradio? Gordon Mclendon tried an all classified format in LA in the '60s. It didn't make it.

I love Jazz but even KUNV had to kill it because it couldn't atrract enough subscribers and they have a good signal.
They switched to a so called smooth jazz format to take advantage of KOAS going modrn R&B. Last time I looked they didn't even show up with the PPM.

radiopunk, that’s a fair challenge and I acknowledge my first post lacked perspective. There are a great many fun and original local morning shows in smaller markets, but just as with Las Vegas, it’s relative to what listeners of those areas demand. In most of those cases, one or two local shows rise to the top and stay familiar because they do what’s necessary to maintain their originality while giving listeners an alternative to syndicated shows. It would seem like a good thing that LV offers a lot of local morning radio talent to choose from, but when it gets to the content, it often seems more like a glut. The point of my post was that all five of the shows you’ve listed as top-rated feature talent that’s been around town 10 years or longer, and since it’s becoming less and less a transient market now, one would think listeners will get antsy for something new sometime soon. I also acknowledge that in larger markets, far bigger talents have been shown the door, victims of PPM, so some of the management in LV deserves credit for staying live and local during mornings.
