Whats this market missing?

KVIL.....All Village People all the time.

What can be worst than all Rap, all Hip Hop or all sports talk. This is part of the reason why radio is on life support. There is an old saying...if all you eat is garbage, then garbage is all you'll know.

Radio reaches more than 95% of the US population on a weekly basis. More than any other medium by far. More than the Internet, TV, everything. If that is "life support", that term must mean something entirely different to me. If radio is falling down on anything, it's not properly investing in its products AND under valuing its brands on the sales side.

You say radio is all rap, all hip hop yet Las Vegas doesn't have a hip hop station. The closest thing to it...KVEG plays plenty of pop product that can be heard on several other stations.

What I was in Vegas, I plan on moving there....I counted 10 Talk stations, 3 Religious stations, 7 Spanish stations and 4 Rap/Hip Hop stations. You said there are no Rap Stations....well, how bout 93.1 the Beat, Hot 97.5, KLUS 98.5, kWID 101.9, 104.3. That is 5 Stations for rap, i'm sure not all of them are off the air. Vegas might not have a Rap Station, but there are Stations in areas outside of Vegas that are Broadcasting Rap and is being picked up in Vegas.

You are confusing rap with Top 40. Also 101.9 is Spanish language gold, not even anywhere close to rap (although it used to be a hip hop station several years ago).

There are songs that contain rap on those station but the vast majority do not. Jayf is correct. All of these station are leaning very pop right now. Including KVEG which has historically been more urban. This is probably why they're all doing so poorly... Very little difference musically.

Anyone who would mistake our 101.9 KWID, La Buena, hispanic oldies staion for rap, has little credibility in discussing formats.

Must be someone that hasn't been to Vegas in a while. About 10 years ago, it was wild 102. And before that it was KISS-FM. Both played a little rap.

I want my Country legends 790 back  The closest I can get is Cool 102 and Country Chuck when he is on. If 790 had some local news, I think it would own.

1: Mark and Mercedes (KMXB)...Really??? are you kidding me...first off they came from denver, colorado which is a better market than vegas...and the only reason they are "on top" in the morning is SOCCER MOMS....driving their kids to school.

don't know why they have a producer....all he does is recap the show at the end of the day...MIX could be so much better if they wanted to...

here's the real problem...too many stations that sound alike, play the same type of music...

MIX 941, 985 KLUC, 931 KPLV, 1043 NOW FM, and....HOT 975...they all pretty much play the same general playlist...5 stations are just too much to deal with...and if you add VIBE 99.7 which is really highway stations...that's 6. too much.

I agree with your second point you made that too many stations are playing the same type of music. But that's the new world we're in with PPM. Arbitron has inadvertently done radio a huge disservice with this methodology. Less and less unique content is available in PPM markets. Hopefully radio can figure out a better way of making nitch formats profitable like one of my favorite formats Smooth Jazz.

I disagree with your first point about Mark and Mercedes. Whether they did this with great intention, they have created a tremendous brand here in the market. A lot of locals have a strong connection with them and I believe it's because they just talk about real life things. Not too many dumb "stunts"...it's just real. I agree that they're not always "on" but at this point they have already created a large loyal fan base. They'll be around for a long time as long as CBS can continue to pay them.

How about another station or two that goes all-Christmas to fragment KSNEs massive share?

SUNNY does a nice job with Christmas but most other markets don't allow one station to monopolize it.

KEMP should go full-on Urban hip-hop ,rap, and r&b.
DO IT AND SET YOURSELVES APART FROM THE REST!!! ;D

I have thought that as well. But it looks like KVEG is currently the top CHR. Even if they play the same pop you can hear on multiple stations. They also play some hip hop you can't hear anywhere else. Having that slightly different music mix probably gives them an edge right now. Plus (like KLUC) they are very much live and local, like a throwback to a different and better era of radio.

I'm proud of the broadcasters in this market who have been able to keep our stations live and local, at least during prime hours. With the exception of Clear Channel, I commend companies like the ones mentioned above Kemp Broadcasting (KVEG), CBS Radio and the others not mentioned like Lotus and Beasley.

Yes Las Vegas has a higher % of live and local radio than most markets, including many larger markets.

In markets where every station is tracked there is an even playing field so the big dogs usually win. Their slick sounding canned product beats the weaker sounding canned stations.

With all the local programming in LV there is not so much an even playing field. A slick sounding, mostly tracked station that would thrive in Anytown USA will have much more difficulty here.
