When Was the Last Time You Bought A Radio?

The issue is mechanical wear on the buttons. They are embedded under a waterproof plastic sheet. Eventually the contacts wear out from being pressed too often. So I don't want to start that process of wear on the new one until that happens. Right now everything but the clock set still works.
If you are not concerned with cosmetics and REALLY like the performance of the "guts", you can parallel some outboard switches to the existing switch contacts. If it's those membrane touch switches, you can probably get a couple push buttons and attach them on the back or the top of the radio case.

Wouldn't that negate its waterproof nature, though?

I was long overdue for a new radio receiver, and this month alone I've spent on Amazon more that $2k on radio receivers:

I wanted AM/FM, HD RADIO and Internet Radio.

For my car: Kenwood DNR876S (AM/FM/HD Radio/Internet Radio)

For Home:

SANGEAN HDT-20 component Receiver (AM/FM/HD Radio)
Ocean Digital WR-50 Component Receiver (Internet Radio)
SANGEAN HDR-14 HD portable receiver (AM/FM/HD Radio)
Ocean Digital WR-336F desktop receiver (FM/Internet Radio)
C. Crane CC WiFi 3 desktop receiver (Internet Radio)
Tecsun R9700DX portable receiver (AM/FM/Shortwave)

Before those, the last time I bought a radio receiver was in 1991, a Technics component sound system in a cabinet which by the way, still works, and added to it the above 2 new component Internet and HD Radio receivers ...

Is your car older? All my newer (last 10 years) vehicles have such integrated touchscreens it would be a nightmare, if not impossible, to replace the stock unit.

You got 7 radios in your house? Are you going to decide which of the 6 portable/component/desktop radios you like the most and send the others back?

I have a 2012 Chrysler Town & Country.
Soon I'll be leasing an HD Radio channel and I badly wanted HD Radio for both the car and home.

I sort of realized that. Last week I rented a 2023 Chrysler Pacifica (with no GPS navigation, nor HD Radio !!!???!!!) and I noticed that the panel is integrated and part of the dashboard. So upgrading it, I suppose is not an option.

But on a positive note - and to my surprise, AM reception is the best I've heard so far! At 12 Noon, I tuned in to WVMT 620 AM from Vermont. It was coming-in in Montreal, LOUD and CLEAR! First time I was able to receive that station.

lol.

I'll keep them all! And I'll buy 2 more: An Inovonics Model 679 HD Radio Monitor... and Insignia NS-HD01 FM/HD Pocket Radio
.
There's a reason.... soon I'll be leasing an HD Radio channel, and I need the radios to see how each performs ...

At 9 receivers, might as well make it 10. So I'm open to suggestions! lol

I collect antique radios; I rarely add to the collection these days. I can think of 3 that came home in 2024: a couple battery powered "farm" sets from the forties that my cousin found for me, and a rather nice multi-band Philco Tropic-Master from the early fifties. I haven't done anything with either of them.

I'm not sure I'll ever buy another new one. It would have to be something really special.

Bought a Jensen CR-100SB, combo AM-FM cassette record and play, a few weeks back. Under $30 on Amazon. Needed something that would record off radio without hassle. It works though it's not a great recorder (Sony and Panasonic, among others, used to make these and they were terrific). Now if I don't drop it, I'm set for a long time.

It depends how one defines "a radio." All of the following include AM and FM, with one exception.

The exception: A Commodore 7-transistor Ancient Modulation pocket radio that I got from my grandparents in 1965. It still works.
I've owned others of that era that are long gone now.

Every vehicle I ever owned had at least an AM radio (I installed an FM converter) except for one I bought in 1983. I had a good Panasonic stereo installed that I moved to the next couple of vehicles until it was stolen in 1996. 🤬

Are we talking a basic AM/FM portable? That was a GE Superradio in 1994. It finally died a couple years ago.

HD? I own two Sangean HDR-16s, bought about 5-6 years ago. Two of the best radios I've ever owned. Given my music and sports preferences, I consider HD essential.

Boombox? I bought a $60 AM/FM/CD unit from Amazon almost a year ago for the sig-other. It works great and she loves it. I've owned others that didn't last long.

Home stereo? I own several, all bought in the last 10 years, most connected to TVs.

Communications/ham gear? A Yaesu FT-450D, bought in 2017. Still does its job. I also have a few SDR dongles bought since 2012 and a Radio Shack DX-160 bought in 1976 that still works but needs alignment.

I define "radio" in all these ways. I also define it as audio broadcasting via the internet, but that's a piece of cake thanks to TuneIn.

I bought an Aiwa AM/FM/CD boombox from a St. Vincent DePaul thrift store nine years ago. It looks brand new and sounds great. Date of manufacture on the back is August, 1988. The purchase price......four bucks!

I would define it as being something where the radio is a major part of the functionality. Otherwise, I'd have to say that I bought a radio just a month and a half ago -- albeit a radio that came with an included car.

Yeah, there's still some ambiguity in that definition -- clearly, a portable radio qualifies. But how about if you add a CD player or bluetooth capability? In the end, I'd say it comes down to whether you bought it primarily for the radio.

I bought a Sangean HDR-14 about 6 months ago. It's a very nice HD Radio.
Oh.. and a few weeks ago I got a SiriusXM SXPL1H1 Onyx Satellite radio with a home kit. I moved my lifetime subscription there when I traded in my car recently. It works very well in my home.

Is that better than simply streaming SiriusXM? Although not everybody has robust internet, so it might be the definitive choice for some subscribers.
