Where is CW going in the Seattle Market?

The hiring process for Scripps was unusually long. During that time, while I was still working at KCPQ, I would regularly check the ratings sheets that for some reason showed up every day in my inbox. I can confirm that KWPX/Ion would regularly beat KSTW during some day parts and would also beat KJZO at times. I didn't check KONG. This was before the WNBA and while the ratings probably aren't great for women's basketball it was more of a proof of performance to see if Scripps/Ion could handle live sports. There has been a little wringing out of things and now I think it's going pretty good. It's definitely a different style of basketball as compared to the NBA. It sounds like DarrenVision has a beef of some sort with the WNBA and that's unfortunate. The games are actually fun to watch at times.

I dont understand that why Paramount doesnt want to sell KSTW or duopoly with KIRO. IDK if Tegna was hesitant to affliate CW on KONG since they refuse to carry LIV Golf on KFMB.2 along with WLMT, KSKN, WCCT, and KCWI.

KSTWlogo500.jpg

New KSTW "bug". White line going through it is part of the set, not the logo. Logo still hangs on after most commercials start, same as before with the CW logo.

As someone who grew up in Tacoma (where KSTW-TV is actually licensed), I find the "SEATTLE11" bug to be annoying. But I'm guessing that few others will care, since the only identification that KSTW still has with Tacoma is the hourly legal ID in small print.

That's because KSTW is licensed to Tacoma, but would rather not admit it.

Well it's like another CBS O&O like KOVR whose COL is really Stockton but brands itself as CBS News Sacramento.

CW prime time programming is on KOMO DT 4.2. PSIP info still shows the channel as "Comet" and the show info is "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". The KOMO DT 4.2 ID bug is fading in and out at random times, obviously still being triggered by the Comet satellite/IP receiver.
This in itself is also incorrect- it comes in at the end of a segement (of Comet programming) and hangs on through the start of the commercial and then comes back on when the next segment starts. It should only come on at the start of the segment as advertisers don't want your ID key over their commercials.
An inauspicious debut for the CW on 4.2.

One thing is for sure, nobody will die over this. My guess is KOMO doesn't have a way of picking up dynamic PSIP for the channel yet, so the old static Comet PSIP in their ATSC encoder is still hanging around. Probably one of those GM edicts: 'Hey we did a deal with CW yesterday, and we need to replace Comet first of the month.' 'Call this person for satellite coordinates'. 'Chop chop!'

I wish KSTW would have thought about using the old "circle 11" logo that they used as an indie pre-1995. WPIX and KTLA use retro logos...why not KSTW? Albeit, the days of the 8:00 Movie are long and gone, so Family Feud it is, during primetime.

Remember when they were called "KSTWashington", with the jingle? That's when they were carried in Yakima, Tri-Cities, and Spokane along with western WA. It was one of the strongest indies in the U.S....back when people actually watched live TV. ;)

What?? Not sure where you got that idea. KSTW has never been a particularly successful independent.

Where can I find a list of the strongest independent stations in, let's say, 1988? How did KSTW's revenue compare to stations like KTVU, WTTV, WUAB, and others that had regional carriage (not on satellite like WGN or WTBS)? I think even Coeur D'Alene had KSTW on cable for several years.

KSTW did quite well in the latter part of the seventies and throughout the eighties, and did gain regional superstation status in the eighties. And, yes, it was a successful station during that period.

As for regional superstations. I know before UPN/WB network. I know several of these regional superstation. I'm excluding WGN, WTBS, and WWOR since they have national presence.

KSTW - Washington State
KPTV - Oregon State/SW Washington
KTVU - Northern California and southern Oregon.
KTLA - Southern California, Hawaii, Arizona, Nevada and Southwest Texas
KTTV - Southern california
KPHO - Arizona and New Mexico
KWGN - Colorado and the Rock Mountain Area
KTVT - North Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana
WPIX - New York and the Northeast
WSBK - New England area
WTOG - Central and southwest Florida.

These are the regional superstations that I can think of at that time. Any others?

Just because you brand yourself as a "superstation" doesn't mean the station was successful from a revenue perspective.
Same as branding yourself as: "action news", or "on your side". Neither means the station has more action in their newscast, nor a particular viewer advocate over another.
Nice to know that the branding back in the day made an impact, with you at least.

WPHL/WTAF/WKBS - Pennsylvania, NJ
WUAB - Ohio and Western PA
WXIX - Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana
WTTV - Indiana, Kentucky
WKBD - Michigan
KPLR - Missouri, Illinois, etc
KBMA/KSHB - Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa
WTTG and WDCA - Mid-Atlantic and the Carolinas
WCIX - Florida
WVTV - Wisconsin

KHJ and KCOP also had microwave distribution along with KTLA and KTTV as far east as Texas.
