Where is CW going in the Seattle Market?

Just because you brand yourself as a "superstation" doesn't mean the station was successful from a revenue perspective.
Same as branding yourself as: "action news", or "on your side". Neither means the station has more action in their newscast, nor a particular viewer advocate over another.
Nice to know that the branding back in the day made an impact, with you at least.
TV/Radio Age published local market sweeps ratings through much of the eighties, and my recollection is that KSTW generally earned sign on to sign off shares in the 11 to 13 point range. As examples from old copies of that magazine that I found quickly, KSTW had a 13 HH share in the November 1980 sweeps (just below the top 10 highest rated independent stations in the country). It duplicated that performance in the May 1981 sweeps. 12 share in November 1981, then back up to a 13 share in May and November of 1982. That was solid performance for independent TV stations in that era, and I can't imagine that a solid operator like Gaylord Broadcasting would have failed to translate those ratings into equally solid revenue numbers, especially considering the generally heavy commercial load on the station during early fringe.

And stations like KING and KOMO were running 20+ shares individually. Plus again; we're talking 43 years ago.
A lot has changed in that time.

And so? We were talking about the level of success KSTW enjoyed as an independent station -- and it hasn't been an independent station in 28 years (until this month), so we are inherently talking about what happened a long time ago. Like many (probably most) independent stations, it's "golden era" was back in the eighties, which is when independent stations in general enjoyed more success than they had previously, but before the Fox network was much of a factor.

But during that era it was extremely rare for an independent station to beat a network-affiliated counterpart in a local market, so "success" for an independent was judged on a separate curve versus network affiliates. As an example, I picked the May 1981 sweeps (simply because that was the first photocopy from "TV/Radio Age" that I grabbed, and I see that the only markets where an independent managed to beat a network affiliate were Minneapolis/St Paul (KMSP with a 19 versus NBC-affiliated WTCN with a 17) and Las Vegas (KVVU with a 24 versus NBC-affiliated KVBC with a 23). In Phoenix, independent KPHO did tie KTVK (ABC) with a 20 share for each. In a few other markets, independents came close (Chicago's WGN had an 18 share versus the 19 share of NBC-owned WMAQ).

KSTW never came close to matching the success of a KMSP, KVVU, KPHO, or WGN in that regard, but it was solidly in the next tier of successful independent stations along with stations such as WKBD Detroit, KTVT Dallas/Fort Worth (which shared ownership with KSTW), WCIX Miami, WTOG Tampa, KWGN Denver, and KTXL Sacramento.

I think it is safe to say that many of the people participating in discussions here have fond memories of these stations, just as many have fond memories of their favorite CHR stations in the eighties in the radio-focused discussions. I also don't think that anyone will seriously suggest that you can run a radio or TV station today as they were operated back then -- the economics and surrounding environment have changed too much, with broadcast being a shadow of its former self for both radio and TV. But the history does matter, because those of us who have fond memories of these stations do find it sad to see what they've become -- even though we do understand the reasons why it is so. That's true whether one is talking about the decline of a TV station like KSTW (or the multitude of other independents that have followed the same trajectory) or sadness over seeing a once-great radio station like WPLJ in NYC turned into another outlet running satellite-fed CCM.

Quite a few issues are available at TELEVISION / RADIO AGE: Radio, TV and advertising magazine 1953 to 1989

And, if anyone has any of the missing issues, I'd like to buy, borrow or have them scanned. Email me at [email protected] for more information.

Interesting. I wonder what happens to Univision now.
Prior to Sinclair, Fisher was the first independent group owner to have Univision-affiliated stations. I'm betting that Sinclair has been waiting for that affiliate agreement to run out, so they can take these stations to their traditional, one might say, news-political, programming. I'm sure they've determined by now that the upcoming 2024 political season, is going to provide more revenue potential than network programming to a Latino population.

I'm also suspicious of this "Press Release" with no attribution. Sounds like somebody is trying to get something to happen.

Show us a link to a press release or something else because otherwise, we probably wouldn't believe it.

if it isn't on another station within seattle, then it will be cable only
And becomes a national feed as well with all local programming taken out.
