The Arrow tries, but they fall way short.
There is no reason to keep a song rotation down to 400 or less, especially when you are playing Classic songs.
They could expand their song rotation to about 2,000 songs very easily, and still play only the cream.
Just a thought from an old radio guy.

Another quality take CT! You have to wonder how many classic rock listeners, or younger music listeners to A/C stations have IPODS. Anyone with an IPOD has the ability to program anywhere from 500 to 50,000 songs depending on the gigs. At that point the only reason to listen to formated music stations IS for the personalities. As we are witnessing, the only way that will be happening again is for local ownership who know to program first, then let the $$$'s come in. I believe the horse is out of the barn for the future of personality driven FM radio. IPODS and Satellite radio are in the process of taking out FM IMO. The game may succeed on AM talk because there's no choice other than personalities on the virtue of the format itself, but they need something else like a tie-in to a major local sports franchise. If that doesn't happen over the next few years they may find it hard to survive on personality alone. No matter how you look at it you still need personality, laser precision programming and a little luck to survive and profit in today's radio business world.Chuck Tiller said:Mediafrog+ said:However, the Classic Rock format on KRBE 1070 from 1984-87 was far superior to anything that has been done with that genre on FM here.
Yes it was very good. I still maintain that a larger playlist would help any classic rock station or just about any format for that matter. There are plenty of great songs which are not heard due to the tighter playlists. I understand that music research proves differently. However, we have followed that way of doing it for years. It's time to throw those musical shackles off and renew the sound which has become increasingly stale and boring.
Another thing that does not matter anymore, is the DJ who could mix the music and present it in his/her own unique way while staying consistent with the overall sound of the station. It is an art which has faded away. The listeners do care who is on the air or at least did care, until the bean counters downplayed their importance, ripping out the personality under the guise of saving money.
Return the music and return the personality. We can make radio exciting again. I hear the excitement in 1560 The Game, KSHN 99.9FM Liberty, and 1390 AM KULP El Campo.
