Who is already missing sports on TV?

So Jay Culter is trending on Twitter. I wondered why. Saw many great posts, including this one from a guy in Wisconsin:

"Saw Jay Cutler trending and thought maybe he had the corona. It worried me...Not just for his health. But if he had it, he’d pass it to the Packers."

Los Angeles Sparks guard Syndey Wiese tested positive for the novel coronavirus, the Sparks said in a statement Friday.

Wiese is the first known WNBA player to test positive for the virus, the Los Angeles Times reported. The WNBA is currently not in season.

Wiese, 24, was tested after returning from playing overseas in Spain.
“She’s been in self-isolation at home in Phoenix since her return and is encouraging everyone to practice social distancing to help prevent the spread of the virus,” the basketball organization said.

Wiese is showing mild symptoms, she said in a series of tweets Friday.

“The symptoms I showed were loss of taste and smell,” she said. “They are newer symptoms but they ARE symptoms.”

The WNBA player said she was denied testing twice because she wasn’t showing enough symptoms.

This is the first reported known case of COVID-19 affecting the WNBA.

Thursday would have been the first day of the season. Although there is no set date for when action will return, ESPN‘s Jeff Passan says the MLB and MLBPA agreed that play will not resume until:

“There are no bans on mass gatherings that would limit the ability to play in front of fans. However, the commissioner could still consider the “use of appropriate substitute neutral sites where economically feasible”;
There are no travel restrictions throughout the United States and Canada;
Medical experts determine that there would be no health risks for players, staff or fans, with the commissioners and union still able to revisit the idea of playing in empty stadiums.”

Here are talks that the MLB are doing in case COVID-19 orders are lifted.

With the flatten-the-curve approach, it seems unlikely that it will be safe enough to meet everyone's standards for crowds before the scheduled end of the season. Revisiting the "studio baseball" empty stadium approach could be the only way to get anything out of 2020.

Assuming there is still no cure, and no way to prevent. This virus has a cycle to it, and getting into 2021 means you begin the cycle again. Unless you find a way to break the cycle, either through a cure or an immunity, and that's what they're trying to do.

The problem with contact sports (and baseball is a contact sport) is the virus is spread by direct contact. Some people have compared this to when Magic Johnson announced he had AIDS, and retired from basketball. He couldn't play basketball knowing he had AIDS because it was possible that if he cut himself on the court, his blood contained the disease. Same thing with this virus. So if they do an empty stadium, the only way to do it is constantly test the players for the virus, so make sure they don't spread it to each other.

The owner of NY Knicks, James Dolan has been tested positive for COVID-19

James Dolan, the executive chairman of Madison Square Garden Company and owner of the New York Knicks, has tested positive for the coronavirus.

The Knicks announced Dolan's diagnosis Saturday night. It is not clear when he was tested or when he received the diagnosis.

Dolan is the first U.S. major pro sports owner known to have tested positive for the virus. He also owns the NHL's New York Rangers, along with other venues like Radio City Music Hall, The Hulu Theatre and The Chicago Theatre.

"The Madison Square Garden Company Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Jim Dolan has tested positive for coronavirus," the Knicks' statement said. "He has been in self-isolation and is experiencing little to no symptoms. He continues to oversee business operations."

This whole experience is helping me understand why I love watching sports on TV. Others may feel the same way. I enjoy the competition, and I enjoy the interplay with the fans. Sure I miss watching the NCAA finals that would be happening now. But the reality is that I was not going to have a team in the finals this year. I was going to watch anyway. Why? Because of those two things: competition & the fans. I can get the fix watching old tapes. So today, its college softball. Not exactly my first choice, but I have watched it in the past. These girls are great players, and the fans are really into it. Makes for great sports TV.

Red Bull motorsport boss Helmut Marko said he advised his drivers to become infected with coronavirus while the season is in hiatus.

The 76-year-old said he had the idea to bring his Formula 1 drivers and juniors together in a camp, which "would be the ideal time for the infection to come".

"They are all strong young men in good health. That way they would be prepared whenever the action starts," he said.

The rest of Red Bull management were against the idea, which was abandoned.

The leader of Red Bull Racing is underfire for this suggestion over COVID-19 exposure. Yes its similar to the old Chicken Pox Party and Measles Party of decades past.

The leader of Red Bull Racing is underfire for this suggestion over COVID-19 exposure. Yes its similar to the old Chicken Pox Party and Measles Party of decades past.

It has a certain appeal to those who see only the old people and those with bad lungs and hearts dying, but I assume that everyone who catches this has at least an outside chance of dying. We are far too early in the study of this disease to start recommending that anyone contract it. Chicken pox before the vaccine was fatal in one in 60,000 cases, and not everyone was getting it in the span of 6 months. This would appear to be much more of a threat to life.

A look at perhaps the last soccer league in the world, the Belarus Premier League. Fans still allowed in the stadiums, the country's president suggests they drink more vodka to ward off the virus, and a poor-quality league is suddenly striking international TV deals left and right. Interested, NBCSN?:

If this keeps up, NFL preseason/first half could be in jeopardy next. Not to mention MLB pushing back the season even further.

ESPN to Broadcast NBA 2K20

We’ve covered a number of sports leagues and organizations who have turned to video games to simulate seasons that have been postponed or canceled amid the coronavirus outbreak. And now, ESPN has announced plans to broadcast a players-only tournament featuring NBA players competing in 2K Sports’ NBA 2K20.

The NBA 2K20 Player Tournament will start airing this Friday, April 3rd, with games running through April 11th. In all, 16 players have signed on, including marquee names like Kevin Durant of the Brooklyn Nets and Trae Young from the Atlanta Hawks.

“We’re thrilled to partner with the NBA and NBPA to bring basketball back to fans throughout the world and to help those in need during these uncertain times,” Jason Argent, 2K senior vice president of sports strategy and licensing, said in a news release from ESPN.

All Champions League and Europa League matches have been suspended "until further notice" by Uefa because of the global coronavirus pandemic.

All national team games in June have also been postponed, including play-off matches for Euro 2020 - already postponed to 2021 - and qualifying matches for the Women's Euro 2021.

The European governing body's 55 member associations met on Wednesday.

The Premier League is suspended until at least 30 April.

The Euro 2020 play-offs are set to feature Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and Scotland.

Premier League clubs Manchester City and Chelsea are both still in the Champions League, while Manchester United, Wolves and Scottish Premiership side Rangers are all in the Europa League.

Pretty obvious at this point.

Update

The Belgian soccer league has become the first major European competition to recommend ending its season with the current standings declared final because of the coronavirus outbreak.

The league says Club Brugge would be awarded the title if the advice is confirmed at a general assembly meeting on April 15. Brugge would also qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Brugge is currently 15 points ahead of second-place Gent with one game to go before the season-ending playoffs.

The league management board has agreed it is unclear when team training could resume and says it is “very unlikely” any games with fans attending could be played before June 30.

The league says even games in empty stadiums would put stress on public health and security services dealing with the pandemic. It agreed the risk of infecting players would also damage the competition’s integrity.

The Senior PGA Championship in Michigan has been canceled.

The PGA of America says it based its decision on Michigan’s stay-at-home order that was enacted March 23.

The Senior PGA in Benton Harbor, Michigan, was to be played May 21-24. It will be held next year at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It will return to Benton Harbor the following year.

Interesting story about stations and networks seeking refunds or credit on the games they're missing:

You can work this up the food chain. The teams and leagues are still paying athletes and venues. Imagine being an athlete who was let go during free agency, but still hasn't signed. Who will sign an athlete if the team isn't playing and fans aren't buying tickets? At some point, someone is going to eat a big chunk of money.
