Who is already missing sports on TV?

MLB and the players keep bashing heads when it comes to a season. 72 game season proposed, then an 80 game season, then a 50 game season, they can't make a decision.
High school baseball games are playing in Iowa and the major leagues can't figure it out. Will they pull a '1994' and cancel the season eventually? Or will we actually see a little fanless MLB on our TV sets this summer/fall?

I'm watching boxing on ESPN right now and keep seeing a report on the update crawl about Yankees president Randy Levine calling for new talks, saying the issues that have to be resolved have nothing to do with money or the length of the season. So what ARE those issues? Guess I'll have to wait till SportsCenter comes on after the main event.

Meanwhile, Dr. Fauci has emerged from his secret laboratory again to advise MLB -- and, by implication, all sports -- to wrap things up before the end of September, when we could face a second wave/flu double whammy. This would leave the NBA and NHL time to complete their playoffs, but would limit MLB to maybe 35-40 games before rushing into the playoffs and Series, and would abort the NFL season after Week 3 or 4. Lovely, just lovely.

And don't forget college football as well. They will be just getting started if the CDC and states force them to shut down again. I don't want bad news...hopefully by late September the Oxford vaccine is ready for distribution, and the virus threat goes down to a level where near-normalcy can continue while protecting the vulnerable and people in assisted living. Or we have a treatment of some kind that can stop a massive spike at cold/flu season, which could mean a normal 2021.
But of course the gist is that no one knows when and how strong the 2nd wave will be. Many universities will be letting their students out before Thanksgiving and having them complete finals online at home. That's early December. IHME says mid September, albeit the model has been criticized lately for predictions that were off.

But that subscriber can only get ESPN+'s programming. No big events (back when there were big sports events) from ESPN or ESPN2. Nothing that aired originally on ESPNU. Taking boxing as an example: If the show runs from 9 to 11 on ESPN2, a cordcutter with an ESPN+ subscription can't watch, either live or on replay. What that ESPN+ subscription buys the cordcutter is two or three hours worth of "undercard" fights and hype for the main event (which is only available online and via streaming devices to cable subscribers with ESPN+ subscriptions). Likewise, if you want to see the top NCAA football games on Saturday night, you're not going to get them if you've cut the cord, even if you're paying $5 a month for ESPN+. While your neighbor with cable and ESPN+ might be watching Oklahoma vs. Texas, you can watch McNeese vs. Arkansas State, Eastern Michigan vs. Western Michigan, Jacksonville vs. Rice or some similar matchup.
 
I'm fully aware of how ESPN+ works. I was a subscriber last year mainly for the CFL games (Canadian Football League). I was just responding to the question asked in regards to if ESPN+ and ESPN were one in the same.
 
As the number of games to be played continues to be a sticking point in negotiations to start the 2020 MLB season, camps have been shut down for "deep cleaning" after several teams reported players and other team personnel testing positive for COVID-19.

It's temporary, but with the pandemic roaring anew in more than 20 states, could the American sports scene be put back in the deep freeze even before most of it has had a chance to thaw out? ESPN's boxing card on Thursday night lost its main event less than 24 hours before air time because a member of one of the fighters' support teams tested positive and that boxer had to withdraw. How long can those shows, and similar fanless MMA productions, continue?
 
I just wanna say I’m still missing sports. I know it’s been 3 months since we’ve had them, but honestly, when all this Covid stuff first started, I never thought it would last this long. And I’ve heard it’ll go on a lot longer. Will there even be a 2020-21 NFL season??

Apparently there is a political debate over COVID-19 and the NFL season between the President and Dr. Fauci.


President Donald Trump on Friday rebuked his administration's top infectious disease expert, rejecting Dr. Anthony Fauci's warning that the ongoing coronavirus pandemic could keep football from returning this fall.

“Tony Fauci has nothing to do with NFL Football,” Trump wrote on Twitter. “They are planning a very safe and controlled opening.”


The president's social media post put him at odds with the man who spent weeks as perhaps the most prominent face of the White House's coronavirus response team. But Fauci's role appears to have diminished in recent weeks as the Trump administration has shifted toward efforts aimed at reopening the country.

Yesterday he didn't. He said, "Riders up!" As his state had its first major sports event, The Belmont Stakes. A really weird broadcast. And Jerry Bailey always had a delay for some reason before he commented.

Spike in COVID-19 Cases Among Athletes
Earlier in the week, we discussed the spikes in coronavirus cases from players in states like Texas with the Houston Texans, Dallas Cowboys, University of Texas, Same with South Carolina with players from Clemson University and pro golfer Nick Watney who also tested positive last week.

That list of athletes that tested positive for coronavirus continues to grow as tennis pro Novak Djokovic reportedly tested positive for COVID-19.

In the PGA, Webb Simpson, who won last week's RBC Heritage in South Carolina decided to withdraw out of caution, as well as Brooks Koepka’s caddie (who tested positive) which forced Koepka to withdraw from this week’s Traveler’s Championship in Connecticut.

Connecticut along with New Jersey and New York are implementing their own 14 day quarantine for any visitor coming to the Tristate area that traveled from a coronavirus spike state.

Plus NFL fan Waivers to be considered

As COVID-19 cases spike among pro and college athletes nationwide, the NFL is considering making fans who attend games this season sign liability waivers protecting teams from coronavirus-related lawsuits, according to Daniel Kaplan of The Athletic.

The proposal is likely to be sent to teams next week, along with an array of other best practices for re-opening stadiums during the pandemic. An anonymous source familiar with the league's plans told Kaplan the forms would likely be electronic.

How ironclad the waivers would be in protecting teams from potential legal action is up for debate. Attorney Bob Hilliard, who's sued MLB on behalf of fans hit by foul balls and spoke to Kaplan on the matter, questions how ironclad the waivers would end up being in court.

The NFL faces an uncertain future due to the COVID-19 crisis.


Throughout the spring and into the summer — without the NBA playoffs and baseball’s opening weeks — the sports world has continued to feel the steady drumbeat of the NFL. The league opened free agency as usual, providing news-making moments such as Tom Brady signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and then its draft went off without a hitch in April, delivering boffo ratings for ESPN.

For the TV networks and sports media outlets that cover the league, this has been most welcome. But as the calendar flipped to July, with NFL training camps set to open at the end of the month, doubts surfaced about the viability of a football season. Novel coronavirus cases are spiking in states across the country. Anthony S. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said football players may need to be in a bubble environment for the season to be played. Los Angeles Rams Coach Sean McVay wondered aloud how teams will be able to both play and take precautions.

“I mean, we’re going to social distance but we play football?” McVay said during a recent media appearance. “It’s really hard for me to understand all this.”
