Who makes you cringe?

Ya’ll go easy on U-Turn LaVern Vivio now. She been at WLAC a long time 20-years or better. Wears many hats, good people and got a lot of kids growing up out there in Sprinfield. Ole Vic Rumore gave her that name long time ago in the early 80’s.

Don’t take radio too seriously, before and especially now.

Best,

Watt, I'm proud to call you my friend, but I disagree with you concerning Lavern Vivio. After 20 years she should sound like a pro instead of a hick. She is terrible.

Two more things..

The Godforsaken metro 911 emergency commercial where the guy calls all frantic. The man goes ballistic thinking some show on his his hd tv is real and about to attack him ?? ...whoever
wrote that commercial needs to be horsewhipped and sent to an overseas country where
it's 50 below zero year round.

And Ryan Seacrest. I ranted about him on the Los Angeles board already so won't
do it here except add the next time he runs down the stairs on American Idol in
the beginning, I hope he trips and fall and he ends up unable to do the show.
It'd be nice if he lost his voice, too, but fat chance of that happening.

I thought Steven Wesley Bridgewater came up with the name back in the "Nashville's Class FM" days of WLAC-FM.
the story I heard is the he was bragging on the air about being able to rhyme, so Lavern thought it would be
difficult to find a rhyme for here name...guess not! And yes, Vic was in charge at the time...so maybe he fed the name to SWB.

Let's see 51161. Does George Plaster have this magic sound you're looking for? I'm sure if he'd been born in a big city.....like Nashville...he could have probably taken his talent and made some money with it. (anybody else on here earning more than 6 figures sitting around talking sports?) I mean he has had more than 20 years in the market.

5161, I come bringing 'face it facts'. If you do the job you're hired to do in radio, there's a chance you'll keep your job for a while. And we can probably count on one hand those of us on this site who kept a radio gig for 20+ years. Romer has been with the Network a long time....not sure he's got 20 years yet.

By the way........Watt tells me he's taking speaking classes so he can keep a radio job for 20 years and sound like a pro.. :)> (smile)

I'm thinking about starting a message string about how much do you love Holly Thompson. JK

She is the prettiest and classiest lady on TV in Nashville.

She still sounds like crap on-air.

Chris: you might be right about SWB giving her that name, but ole Vic took the credit.

Buddy: After two of those speaking lessons, they gave my money back and advised that I take up a career that I actually have aptitude for. Ad salesman.....

LOL!

Serious question === after all of her years in radio, has not one person attempted to offer U-Turn some advice on sounding more
professional?

I would think she would be happy to hear it. The truth does hurt, but if you can improve from it...most people at least try to
make a change. If she saw these posts, I think she would be in tears. Buddy, if she is so nice (I imagine she is, have not met her
or ever seen her) would she try? Touchy subject, I agree.

Why SHOULD she change? After all she HAS been doing it a long time. And my guess is she WOULD be in tears if she saw this....I know I would. I'm sure we have all made some one cringe from time to time....I know I sure have!

We're all entitled to our opinions.

Kent --- point taken. My intent was that if so many people are aware of how "bad" she sounds, why hasn't someone
had the fortitude or goodness to show her ways to improve? That's the way it used to be done. I don't get to listen to her,
so I offer no comment on her sound now.

Her bosses at WLAC should have helped her to improve but obviously they haven't.

When you have success with someone you don't mess with them.

and again, 'send us an aircheck' and your longest tenure with a mid market station.
Several of us here have years of experience with airchecks and will be glad to help with an evaluation.
I'm not upset, but you appeared fixed in your opinion without giving any thought to what others say.
your turn.

Just my opinion Buddy and I am fixed in my opinion.

Wow lots of picking on Utern Laverne going on here. Let's see she has been in radio for 20 years now...most don't last a year or two in nashville. So that says something. Then she has been on clear channel one of the biggest radio companies in the world. That says something as well. She was taken off all stations except WSIX and WLAC just so the other stations could save money and give some unbelievable traffic reports. I would rather know that someone sounds like they're out on the scene of an accident or traffic jam than know that there in a studio reading off TDOTS website.

I love how people pick on her accent too. She is a southern girl. If your from the north then lets see how well you do in the south changing your accent. huh?????

Now for all of you that were commenting on her. Let's make sure the NEXT time you get a radio job that you make NO MISTAKES!!!!

is bob august still doing traffic ? i don't hear him on the air anymore..i really loved his give and take on the C&C show..made traffic informative and entertaining..especially ala tony randall..for the record on this thread..HE DID NOT MAKE ME CRINGE..

U Turn Lavern

Laverne is who she is and that's what listeners like. We held auditions for national BC radio commercials, and Laverne won over all the other "southern-sounding" announcers in the country. They used her voice for years, and it was effective.

What riles me is the put-on southern accents of some announcers and jocks. You can hear it instantly and it destroys any creditibility they have for a station or product.
